Bible Question:
Recent comments in the forum have me curious about the opinions of others on the subject of music. Is sound capable of moral influence? Does music alone, with or without lyrics, carry and communicate moral value? Is music amoral (i.e., does God have no opinion about music)? Is there scripture that weighs in on this issue one way or another? Please note that the questions have nothing to do with worship music. I'd appreciate scriptural input on the narrow subject of the questions themselves. In Him, Doc |
Bible Answer: Greetings Doc! I did a word search for 'music'. The word 'music' is used 90 times in 90 verses in the NIV. Most of the references are either commands to make music or Psalms addressed to the 'Director of Music'. There is only one 'negative' comment made about music. Amos 5:23 says, "Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps." This verse is found in the context of a lament against the house of Israel by God. In it, He rejects all aspects of their worship because of their idolatry. Not one verse says anything about music being immoral or moral! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
