Subject: How do we receive living water? |
Bible Note: Hi applefire251, Thank you for your answer which is basically a very good one. However, I will speak to you as one who capitalizes pronouns of Deity. We are in agreement that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the only way [Way], just as He came as light and is the Light of the world. No one comes to the Father but through Him. You have said two things in your post that I would speak to. "Through Jesus Christ we receive eternal life". And "It gives eternal life." 1) Since Jesus is not an "it", I would think that we can agree that the living water in John 4 did not give eternal life. The living water here was for cleansing, spiritual life, and spiritual transformation. I think of the living water as the word(s) of God and even the holy spirit of God. Isaiah 12:2, "'Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the Lord God is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation'. 3 Therefore you will joyously draw water From the springs of salvation. 4 And in that day you will say, "Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name. Make known (His) deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted." 5 Praise the Lord in song, for He has done excellent things; Let this be known throughout the earth. 6 Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel." 2) I believe that Jesus wants to give living water as a gift, and that He wants the Samaritan woman to know who it [He] is who is speaking to her. I would not capitalize "Living Water", and thus I regard it as spiritual water from the Giver of life, her Maker. 3) In regard to the Maker, I found a comparison of John 4:10 with Isaiah 54:5,6 to be interesting. The context of John 4 is that Jesus want her to know Him as her Maker, as her husband, if you will. Isaiah 54:5, "For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the Lord of hosts, And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the (God) of all the earth. 6 For the Lord has called you, Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, Even like a wife of one's youth when she is rejected," Says your God. The Lord is our (Redeemer). Isaiah 54:8. He is her (Prophet). John 4:19. Praise His name, the Holy One of Israel. From the heart, Ray |
