Bible Question:
I remember being at this ladies house whom I was becoming friends with and we were having a topic about religion and different things. Well, the topic of Satan came up and when speaking about him I used his name Lucifer. She flipped out on me and said that she knows now that I'm not from God and a demon is speaking through me because I used or spoke the word Lucifer and told me I would have to leave if I ever used it again. When I was talking in a very cristian manner. I rely felt hurt and VERY offended. Her telling me that I'm some devil in her house especially when I feel so close to God and spend most of my day with him. I couldn't believe she said that to me. Especially, since this lady really had nothing to do with God. Other than the occasional "I know everything" talks on religon. Where did that come from? Is there any truth to what she said? (Not that I believe what she said) but it frightened me and has bugged me since. |
Bible Answer: God's day to you, eascusa, The King James Version (KJV) and 7 other translations have "Lucifer" in Isaiah 14:12. Others do not. Is Lucifer a correct translation? The word in question is Heylel, which is also translated "star". Is Isaiah 14 about the fall of the king of Babylon only? If it includes Lucifer, how much of the passage includes. If it is one verse or a few (vv 12-14), are we making a pretext or taking verses out of context? I read in the KJV, "O Lucifer, son of the morning" Who is his father, since I don’t recall any angel being called a son? I could not find an outside source that Heylel or Shahar were kings of Babylon, "Helal, ben Shahar," or "Day star, son of the Dawn." So I don’t think this verse is about names. Shahar was a god worshipped at Ugarit. http://www.theology.edu/ugarbib.htm When Jesus said He saw Satan fall (Luk 10:17), his fall is also in Revelation 12:8-10) . How does the passage in Isaiah fit in with these passages? How did Lucifer get in the translations? When King James Version was translated, I believe the Masoretic Hebrew text was not the only source for the Old Testament. I think the Latin Vulgate was also used. One reason is Lucifer is not a Hebrew, or even an Aramaic or Greek name. Looking up in several dictionaries, it is a Latin name, for Venus, the morning star. Jerome (c. 347-420) did use Lucifer in The Latin Vulgate. That has a big influence. Read the following: http://www.israelofgod.org/lucifer.htm http://www.spiritrestoration.org/Church/Satan/Lucifer.htm http://www.kjvonly.org/doug/kutilek_notes_on_lucifer.htm Before Jerome, Tertullian (155-220) in "Contra Marrionem," v. 11, 17), Origen (185-254) in "Ezekiel Opera," iii. 356), and others, identified Lucifer with Satan http://www.answers.com/topic/lucifer http://newprotestants.com/LUCIFER.htm I believe, this is a trend that transitioned to tradition that trampled truth. Some people still hold that Lucifer is a valid name for Satan. On the other hand some don’t realize people may have been mistaught, like the woman you dealt with. A lesson we all need to learn is handle those we believe have been mistaught. I believe the woman you dealt with had blinders on and didn’t know the truth. She just accepted what she was taught and that you were wrong. I wanted to know what the truth was, so I took time to *search* the truth. I have amended my belief on Lucy Fer … Lucifer. Now I believe 100 percent it is a mistranslation. I was on the fence before. I encourage you to study and meditate on the Bible … not just the translations.
