Bible Note: Greetings Lightning56! It is a very common feature of Old Testament passages to repeat the same concept in slightly different terms. Thus, Is. 11:1 is simply stating the same thing twice in slightly diffent terms, not referring to seperate growths. To see this, compare Is. 53:2a, "He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground..." Here, in a clear prophecy to Jesus using the same imagery as Is. 11:1, two distinct phrases refer to the same person. Thus, in Is. 11:1, the "shoot" and the "branch" refer to the same person - Jesus.
