Bible Note: Bradk In answer to your first question yes it is usually doctrine that divides but doctrine is birthed in theology. So I believe the ultimate failure is the theology that developed the doctrine. On point two ultimately it is our sin nature that causes our division. We pridefully try to explain what God has not revealed or we try to play Monday morning quarterback and couch what God really said by something that seems right with us. However I do disagree with your last point. In response to the accusations of division of denomination it has been commonly said "we agree on majors and disagree on minors." That is a feeble attempt to justify our pride and downplay any division. Fact disagreement causes division no matter if it is disagreement on majors or minors becasuse what is minor to you may me major to me. Example I can not see how for example an anti abortionist (some may say this is a non essential or a minor) can walk in any harmony with a person that believes in abortion. Can't happen. Both can agree in the need for salvation (major or core doctrine as you call them) but both believe they know the "real" requirements to achieve that salvation. Both can't be right and that difference says there must be a division. |
