Subject: Why did Moses' send his wife to Midian |
Bible Note: Greetings Senicienta, Welcome to the StudyBibleForum.com! Keliey gave a good answer, but let's expound upon that a little bit. You specifically asked about the wife of Moses and why she is present with Moses in Exodus 4:25-26 but is seen travelling to Moses (with her father, Jethro) in Exodus 18:2-6. Later, Miriam and Aaron have a fight with Moses about his wife because she is a "Cushite" woman (Numbers 12:1). Moreover, King Solomon refers to the Israelite bondage in Egypt as being in "the midst of the iron furnace" (1 Kings 8:51). Therefore, Scripture tells us several things: 1) Zipporah was the wife of Moses (Ex. 2:16-22) 2) Zipporah was with Moses on the way to Egypt (Exodus 4:24-26) 3) Moses sent her back to Jethro at some point (Exodus 18:2) 4) The Israelite bondage in Egypt is compared to being in "the midst of the iron furnace" (1 Kings 8:51) 4) Zipporah, along with her father Jethro and their two sons, returned to Moses (Exodus 18:1-6) 5) Miriam and Aaron upbraid Moses concerning his wife, calling her a "Cushite" woman (Numbers 12:1) Just these facts alone pointed out by Scripture help to understand the situation and possible reasons as to why Moses sent her back to Jethro. I personally find it interesting that there is no further mention of Zipporah (until Exodus 18) immediately after Moses met with Aaron in the wilderness (Exodus 4:27). Hows that for pointing out what the Bible says without introducing not so much as a single ounce of speculation? :) Blessings to you, Makarios (Nolan Keck) |
