Bible Question:
I heard a Bible teacher say that Paul was not very eloquent in speech. Can anyone give me scripture to support this point? |
Bible Answer: Greetings mincc! On the contrary, I wouldn't say that Paul was not "eloquent", but I would say that he was very persuasive! Indeed, Paul may not have the eloquence or beauty of speech that, say, the Apostle John had, but the dynamics of his thought provoking and deeply grounded speeches and letters are amazing and continue to challenge us today! Even Peter recognized that Paul's points were sometimes difficult to grasp (2 Peter 3:15-16), even though I have every confidence that Peter was able to grasp these concepts as well as anyone. So in conclusion, I would not describe Paul's writing and speech as "eloquent", which is not to take a single thing away from Paul, but I would rather describe his style as "persuasive" and "thought provoking" and "very complex and detailed".. Even though his words did not always flow in the smoothest ways (inspired as he was), Paul was very eloquent in proclaiming Jesus as Lord wherever he went!! Blessings to you, Nolan |
