Subject: why isn't the fourth commandment kept? |
Bible Note: Sin is the transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4). "Everyone who commits (practices) sin is guilty of lawlessness; for [that is what] sin is, lawlessness (the breaking, violating of God's law by transgression or neglect--being unrestrained and unregulated by His commands and His will" (AMPLIFIED 1 John 3:4 ) Are we unrestrained and unregulated by God's law? May it never be! The Law is not merely a bunch of rules. "The law of the LORD is perfect..." (NASB Psalm 19:7). A bunch of rules is the legalism practised and taught by the Pharisees. It is true that we are not under legalism. "For sin will not have authority over you; because you are not under legalism but under grace" Romans 6:14 Complete Jewish Bible. Romans 8:4 (ESV) says "in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled IN US, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit" (emphasis added). Notice it does not say "in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled FOR US." It says IN US, not FOR US. The penalty of sin was paid for us; but that does not give us license to continue to sin. The penalty for disobeying the Law was paid for us; but that does not give us license to disobey the Law. Nor does it mean that we automatically keep the Law. "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us" (1 John 1:8 ESV). " My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1 ESV). We cannot define sin apart from the Law. Sin is the transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4). If there's no such thing as the Law, then there is no such thing as sin. Sin has not ceased; the Law has not ceased. matt517 |
