Bible Note: Luke, you ask "Where in the New Testament are we commanded to ask forgiveness for our sins?" .... In the prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) He set down as a pattern for His disciples, Jesus said "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." Truly this refers to sins, which are our moral and spiritual debts to God's righteousness. The request for forgiveness of sin in this passage is made by the believer (Jesus' teaching was to His followers). In order to be saved, one need not nececessarily name every one of his sins that he has ever committed (who could do that anyway?). But he must confess that he is a sinner. This is not works-based salvation by any means. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ, and by that alone (Ephesians 2:8-10). --Hank |
