Bible Question:
After researching Easter on this site I came across this fact: "according to the World Almanac, Easter is observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox (the first day of spring)." This has prompted some thoughts and questions. Since the term "Easter" is a derivation from pagan goddesses, why has the church embraced this word? For the believer, our Lord's triumph is a day to celebrate - doesn't "Resurrection Day" seem more worth celebrating than "easter?" Which is the correct day of observance according to the Jewish Passover? Wouldn't it be great to begin a Christ-centered, world-wide movement to re-establish the correct day of observance of our Lord's Triumph or would this just wreck havoc with our "Easter Vacation" scheduling? Just wondering . . . Mommapbs |
Bible Answer: Mommapbs, The root word for Easter is also an ancient root for Spring. This is only an issue in the English language as far as I know. Many other languages use a word or words that refer to the day of resurrection or glory. The dating of Easter done in the West acording to plan you indicated based on a solar / lunar model as opposed to a lunar calender in the East if I am not mistaken. The East also still uses the Julian calender for its liturgical calener I believe while the west uses the Gregorian calender.
