Bible Question: why did jesus speak in parables ? |
Bible Answer: First to fulfill what the prophet said as stated in Psalms 78: 2-3,(see also Matt 13:34-35). Parables were a departure from his normal style of preaching to the multitude. Many who flocked to hear Jesus listened with their ears but did not respond with their hearts. Jesus' teaching after this started to distinguish between the 2 groups. To His followers He spoke openly. In this sense, Jesus' use of parables represented both judgement and grace. Judgement because a parable hides the truth from those who are too indifferent. At the same time it was an act of grace. Parables are apt to stimulate a persons interest to discover the meaning making them search for the truth. He was always ready to explain the parables to those who truly sought Him. prayon |
