Subject: Holy Spirit or wind, breath, spirit? |
Bible Note: Hi Mommapbs, My question here is a reposting of a question that I originally asked of John Pilgrim, #114917. It was part of the thread that Sir Pent started, #113288, under the question "Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit?" With that question in mind, I can not connect the new heart and new spirit of Ezekiel 36 with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of John 14. The Holy Spirit could not be yet because Jesus was not yet glorified. Jesus said that He "abides with you, and WILL BE in you." What I say is that it is Christ in us that is the hope of glory. Because we are sons, He indwells us. He tells us to be filled with the spirit. The Old Testament believers were given God's spirit. They walked in His statutes and He was their God. 1) I have come to believe that it would be too confusing for our God to have put the conflicting phrases of a new spirit within you and My Spirit within you this close together. So I go with "new heart, new spirit within you" for verse 26 and "My spirit within you" for Ezekiel 36:27 and "My breath within you" for Ezekiel 37:14. (That would complete the occurances of seven "breaths" for chapter 37). 2) I also go with "My face" and "My spirit" for Ezekiel 39:29. "And I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I shall have poured out My spirit on the house of Israel," declares the Lord." 3) For Psalm 51:10, I see God creating for David a "clean heart" and a "steadfast spirit within" him. 4) David wants his new heart and new spirit renewed rather than taken away from him. That is why I see him saying "do not take Thy holy spirit from me." 5) We could take a look, as an aside, at the occurances of "Presence" in the NASB. There are a total of seven and three of them are in Exodus. It is interesting to me that in Exodus the "bread of the Presence" is noted in the margin that it is [Lit. face]. So in a sense we can connect God's presence (face) with recognition of His spirit by reason of God's word and His bread. From the heart, Ray |
