Bible Question: Thank you, Doc. I am definitely looking for instruction, knowledge and place a premium on wisdom. That being said, what external commentaries or sources do you recommend to dig deeper into the verses. I'm trying to use the Talmud but it's not an easy source to understand. Thank you, Doc. |
Bible Answer: Hi, Turk... I wouldn't spend much time with the Talmud. The Scriptures are the Word of God, yet for us to rightly understand them, as you have noted in a previous post, we need the Holy Spirit. Consequently, we would want to receive instruction from those Christ has gifted to the church specifically for that purpose (Ephesians 4:8-16). Might I suggest a book for you that has been one of the most valuable for training in proper hermeneutics: "How to Read the Bible for All its Worth" by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stewart. http://www.amazon.com/How-Read-Bible-All-Worth/dp/0310246040 There is a chapter in that book that will help you select a commentary.
