Bible Question:
The postexile books of the Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Haggai, Zecharaih and Malachi were written in Hebrew ... as well as the law of God. Why did the Israelites needed the law of God translated? Steve |
Bible Answer: Nehemiah 8:8 (NKJV) So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading. Neh 8:8 (Amplified Bible) So they read from the Book of the Law of God distinctly, faithfully amplifying and giving the sense so that [the people] understood the reading. There is a marginal note at Neh 8:8 in the New American Standard Bible (1995). In the Bible text a small "1" appears at the beginning of the word "translating". In the marginal note it says of translating: "or explaining." "*gave the sense.* This may have involved translation for people who were only Aramaic speakers in exile, but more likely it means 'to break down' the text into its parts so that the people could understand it. This was an exposition or explanation of the meaning and not just translation" (MacArthur Study Bible, 1997, Word). --JVH0212 "In essentials unity, in nonessentials liberty, and in all things charity." |
