Bible Note: Sctt: Hermeneutics is the science of biblical interpretation which involves the establishment and recognition of sound principles which govern the practice of exegesis, and exegesis is the study of the text of Scripture in order to bring out the meaning of it. This is to be distinguished from the error of eisegesis, which is the interpretation of a text by reading into it one's own ideas. When a student of the Bible consistently forms interpretative conclusions that are at variance with the conclusions that serious Bible scholars have agreed upon for hundreds, even thousands, of years, it is fairly obvious that that student has fallen into the error of eisegesis. What is of far more importance than merely forming an opinion on something -- that's easy and comes cheap -- is the soundness of the methods and resources used that gave birth to the opinion. An interpretative opinion of Scripture arrived at by eisegesis is worthless. Moreover, it should not be afforded a place on a public Bible-study forum lest it lead someone away from, not toward, the truth of God's word. --Hank |
