Subject: Cain and Seth's wives descended from who |
Bible Note: Hi 2ndSamuel22 first let me say welcome and you do bring up a valid point ,I believe your reference comes from Gen.20:12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. At first glance this could very well mean his half sister, but as to that view I will give some objections. First the term father can mean grandfather so Sarai could be the daughter of Terahs brother thus making her Abraham’s cousin. This can be seen in Gen.28:13 were God says to Jacob And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac... here God says that Jacob’s father is Abraham but we know that Jacob’s father was actually Isaac. The word daughter can also mean granddaughter as seen in Gen.36:2 Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite. These daughters were actually Canaans granddaughters. Now lets look more closely at who Sarai is in Gen.11:31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. Terah who is Abraham’s father does not call Sarai his daughter but his daughter-in-law. To me this would indicate that she was not a direct descendent of Terah.Sarai my have even been the daughter of Haran who died in Ur of the Chaldees Gen11:28 which would make her Lots brother. Lot was also called Abraham’s brother Gen.14:14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. Here Lot is called his brother but we know that Lot was actually his nephew. Also if Haran was Sarai’s father Terah would have adopted Sarai into his family making Sarai his daughter. I know this may sound confusing but the meanings of father, mother ,sister and daughter have a very wide application in scripture. So to say Sarai was Abraham’s sister may not be as accurate as on first glance. All scripture from KJV. In Christ Scott |
