Subject: Is this a prophecy about Messiah? |
Bible Note: Bradk I think you did an injustice to Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown by failing to give the preceding paragraph along with the one you used. Genesis 49:8-12. JUDAH—A high pre-eminence is destined to this tribe (Numbers 10:14; Judges 1:2). Besides the honor of giving name to the Promised Land, David, and a greater than David—the Messiah—sprang from it. Chief among the tribes, "it grew up from a lion's whelp"—that is, a little power—till it became "an old lion"—that is, calm and quiet, yet still formidable. This paragraph shows that JFB does agree this is messianic prophecy. What you presented appears at least to me do deny this until it is read in context. Interestingly Israel did for the first time since becoming a nation lost the scepter when Rome removed their ability to execute prisoners convicted of religious crimes without Rome's approval. that occurred according to secular history in 4 AD which is 4 to 8 years after the birth of Jesus the Rest giver. Even when Israel was in captivity to Babylon and later the Greeks there remained a religious entity based within Judah that could pass judgement on religious crimes. EdB |
