AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 2:24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. [Matt 19:5; 1 Cor 6:16; Eph 5:31-33] |
Bible Question: Why bother with the leave mother/father bit (2:24) if seemingly neither of them have a mother and father? Is He’s saying that Adam is no longer dependent of Him for direction/orders, but that they are now responsible for making some decisions in their lives? Is it reestablishing their free will/ability to forge their own path without first getting the approval of or order from Him—in order to set the foundation of the Fall in the next chapter, just as the commentary that they were naked and felt no shame (v.25) goes to set up the next chapter’s impending contrast of shame in their nakedness after eating of the tree? |
Bible Answer: Hi: This portion of the scripture did not refer to Adam and Eve only because God already knew that there will be us. As man had been given the power to choose, this specifies and shows the high level of priority God gives to the power of choice He gave to us. He was their maker and wanted them to willingly choose to ask Him for guidance and not because they were forced to and the latter would mean God would not be true to His Word(giving them dominion and creating man in His image and likeness). They were naked physically but were dressed/covered in God's glory hence they felt no shame, but when they made a choice to follow their own choices, contrary to what God had told them about eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the glory of the Lord departed from them, hence they felt ashamed, because their nakedness was evident to them and the shame of being without the glory of God was then evident as well. |
