AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 2:24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. [Matt 19:5; 1 Cor 6:16; Eph 5:31-33] |
Bible Question: Why bother with the leave mother/father bit (2:24) if seemingly neither of them have a mother and father? Is He’s saying that Adam is no longer dependent of Him for direction/orders, but that they are now responsible for making some decisions in their lives? Is it reestablishing their free will/ability to forge their own path without first getting the approval of or order from Him—in order to set the foundation of the Fall in the next chapter, just as the commentary that they were naked and felt no shame (v.25) goes to set up the next chapter’s impending contrast of shame in their nakedness after eating of the tree? |
Bible Answer: Dear Xina, You are correct in observing that Adam and Eve had no earthly parents. Clearly, therefore, the Lord is instituting and setting the pattern for marriage for the rest of humanity. God never makes humans -- Adam on to the last of us -- independent from God. We are to obey His commands, and we are to look to Him for the interpretation of the human experience. Departing from these directives is what resulted in the Fall. These are the roots of sin and error. In Him, Doc |
