Bible Note: Greetings Wordoer! The problem is that one cannot really disprove that this particular version is the Book of Jashar mentioned in the Bible. However, neither can one prove that it is. The evidence though is not very strong that it is that book. The oldest manuscripts only date to about 1625. All of the information (or evidence) about the manuscripts origin come from the manuscript itself, which is not very convincing. For instance, I could write a letter now and claim that it is the missing letter to the church at Laodicea, include some footnotes which state that this letter is a translation of an original Greek manuscript found in the 1st century but lost for many years. But, does this make my claim true? :-) People for centuries have been trying to manufacture or produce a "Book of Jashur", but the effort is really for naught. Even if we did find it, it would only be an interesting piece of historical evidence, not canonical Scripture. So, why worry about it? Would it be neat to find an original of it? Sure! Would it add anything to our understanding of Scripture? No! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
