AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 1:3 And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. |
Bible Question: What is the "light" referred to in Genesis 1:3? Verse 5 calls the light day. However, in 1:14-18 "lights" are implied to be the sun and the moon |
Bible Answer: The word 'light' seems to be used in two different ways. First in Genesis 1:3 God created 'light', the electromagnetic energy that is visible to the naked eye. In Genesis 1:14-18, He seems to be referring to sources of light (sun, moon, stars) when using the term 'light'. "Let there be LIGHTS (plural)" Gen 1:14. A good analogy would be for me to turn on a light (a lamp, etc) that emits light (the actual energy that we see). It may seem strange that God created light sources after He created light, but after this age has ended, we will no longer need those light sources (sun, moon, stars) because His glory will be our light. "And the city has no need of the sun nor of the moon to give light to it, for the splendor and radiance (glory) of God illuminate it, and the Lamb is its lamp." Revelation 21:23 |
