81 | Eph 5:26 | Eph 5:26 | strts5 | 221700
I went to a bible study recently and the pastor made a statement that really struck me. He said at salvation, you are saved, but your mind is not. It really made sense to me, and made many scriptures suddenly make more sense as well. I have been trying to make sense of the finished work at Calvary and renewing the mind, where if the work is finished why I must renew my mind with the word. I guess my question is, is your mind saved at the moment of salvation? |

82 | Celebrate Recovery | Col 1:9 | strts5 | 192456
Any thoughts on this program, perhaps someone is familiar with it. I was also told by someone it does not give room to Christ to actually change a persons heart??? You can check for other things I've posted here and am still in the same place, I want to change but don't know how. I've "thrust" myself into church, prayer, being active in the body, but always end up backsliding. I am also fairly versed in the bible and no amount of head knowledge has helped much either. I'm thinking I need to submit myself to a good pastor, shut up, and just do what he asks. Eight Recovery Principles based on the BEATITUDES by Pastor Rick Warren Principle 1 - Realize I'm not God; I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and my life is unmanageable. "Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor" Principle 2 - Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to him, and that he has the power to help me recover. "Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" Principle 3 - Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ's care and control. "Happy are the meek" Principle 4 - Openly examine and confess my faults to God, to myself, and to someone I trust. "Happy are the pure in heart" Principle 5 - Voluntarily submit to every change God wants to make in my life and humbly ask Him to remove my character defects. "Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires" Principle 6 - Evaluate all my relationships; Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for harm I've done to others except when to do so would harm them or others. "Happy are the merciful" "Happy are the peacemakers" Principle 7 - Reserve a daily time with God for self examination, Bible readings and prayer in order to know God and His will for my life and to gain the power to follow His will. Principle 8 - Yield myself to God to be used to bring this Good News to others, both by my example and by my words. "Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires" |

Doc, Thank you for taking the time to respond. When I first read it my instinct was to ask questions as to the first two sentences, "We do not, of course, as believers, live by methods. Instead, we live by every Word of God. Ours is a life of relationship, not a life of technique. Relationship cannot be boiled down into steps, methods, keys, or techniques". This however is obviously my pride. Anyways, thank you I have checked out the website and will do some of the courses. Mike R |

85 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215046
I was reading a book and came across a quote. At first it shocked me because I had always read this verse or heard this verse quoted wrong. I want to know if anyone has any input here? The Holy Spirit convicts us (Christians) of sin? No convicts the world of not believing in Christ! Convict Christians of Righteousness! John 16:8-11 8"And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9concerning sin, (N)because they do not believe in Me; 10and concerning (O)righteousness, because (P)I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11(Q)and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. |

86 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215048
I was looking for other scripture or input that the Holy Spirit convicts Christians of Righteousness and NOT sin. Are there other verses that also say this?
87 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215050
...It is to YOUR advantage that I go away... ...go to My Father and YOU see Me no more... Clearly verse 10 is the subject of the audience, those that do believe. So, does the Holy Spirit point out our sins to us, or does He point out our Righteousness? |

88 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215058
I don't think I will get any fans here, but Matthew Henry is wrong according to the verse. In the verse it says He convicts the world of sin and the only sin that is mentioned is the sin of not knowing Christ. I think I will keep it simple and not add anything that that is not there or implied. So again, does the Holy Spirit ever convict anyone of any sin other than not knowing Christ. This would obviously not include Christians and implies the Holy Spirit only convicts us of our Righteousness which only comes from Christ and not of ourselves but is ours never the less. Not by anything we have accomplished of ourselves. What I am attempting to achieve here is a polar shift in my faith. I have always felt guilty for a sin I committed and thought it was "the conviction of the Holy Spirit". After a proper reading of this verse I now know I was wrong and that is not the Holy Spirit! |

89 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215060
Can you give me scripture references? I am trying to make up my mind, but I am leaning toward my statement. I want to know where it says we must confess our sins in order to be forgiven, that sounds like works because it is dependent on us. I am absolutely not saying we should continue in sin, only that we are the Righteousness of God in Christ Jesus regardless of whether we confess. Are you saying we are then unrighteous until we confess each and every sin. That would be like trying to live under the law, then you have to follow the law perfectly and would end up in one continual act of confession. What freedom and joy is there in that where if we forget to confess a sin we are condemned? I think we are all toast then! Have you confessed ALL your sins? Mike |

90 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215070
Can you give me any scripture that says the Holy Spirit points out our sin? If God not only forgives sin, but also forgets them, who is reminding you of yours? Is God divided against Himself? Is this scriptural or is it a tradition of man?
91 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215082
OK, I read it in context, and the context says, John 16:8-11 8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. any questions on verse 9? Clearly the Holy Spirit does not condemn the Church because we do believe in Him! |

92 | Holy Spirit convicts of sin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | strts5 | 215084
David was under the Law we are not. "John Darby another respected Bible commentator says in his commentary regarding John ch 16:7-11 "No doubt every one shall answer for his sins; and the Holy Ghost makes me feel them." John Darby" I have an Advocate in court, God will not see my sins, but Christs Righteousness! I have no clue what John Darby is talking about. As far as the Righteousness of Christ being ours, I did not mean our own righteousness but that His has been imparted to us and now we walk in it. It is the gift of Righteousness, he gave it to us, we did not earn it, at any rate it is now ours. Or am I mistakes here? "Does the Holy Spirit convict the Christian of sin? It is the testimony of countless Christians that this is indeed the case. And in my case, if the Holy Spirit should stop convicting me of sin I would drop to my knees and plead to God to give it back to me, so that I would know my sins, and repent of them, so that I may walk in His ways. There is no Scripture that I know of that specifically says the Holy Spirit convicts the Christian of their sin. But the council of Scripture does imply it, and the testimony of spirit lead Christians confirms it." Christians believe lots of things that are not true. Unless you can give me a single scripture that says the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, I'm not going to buy it. I can find plenty that say He convicts us of Righteousness. That to me is much more comforting. Jesus tells a parable that declares Gods heart on the subject, the parable of the prodigal son? Where in the story does the father require the son to ask for forgiveness. Furthermore, at what point does the son express sorrow for his sins? I believe Christ knows the Fathers heart best. I have read 1 John several times and won't discount ANY scripture. I do believe in confession for Sanctification and not salvation. Mike |

93 | Melchizedek and Shem | Heb 7:3 | strts5 | 203933
I was recently reading a Pastor's notes for service and in it he basically said Shem (Noah's son) was also Melchizedek. I kind of scrached my head a little. Has anyone ever heard anything anywhere about this. It was a first for me.
94 | Abraham, Gods first choice??? | James 1:17 | strts5 | 193252
I seem to remember someone telling me Abraham was not Gods first choice, but could not find it anywhere. I think maybe its someone else in the Bible or just fuzzy memory, who knows, but if someone does know please let me know... Mike R ps I shouldn't try to make sense after 11pm. |

95 | 2 Peter 1:3-8 hows it work? | 2 Pet 1:9 | strts5 | 215255
2 Peter 1:3-8 3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. The previous post caused me to look up the verse in its context, now I have questions. As I was reading it looks like verse 3-4 are the how to verse 5-8. Basically learning more about who HE is and His power IS the power to enable us to live out verse 5-8? Just looking for a sounding board here, am I stretching or do I get it? In Him Mike |

96 | Rev 3:15-16 | Revelation | strts5 | 215183
Rev 3:15-16 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm— neither hot nor cold— I am about to spit you out of my mouth. I just heard a 'new' interpretation on this verse. One I have never heard before. It implied that this is verse is dealing with mixing the Law and Grace and not our 'walk' with Christ. Interesting to me, I can see where it could make sense, but I also feel as though this verse may be being used to fit someones own teaching. |

97 | Rev 3:15-16 | Revelation | strts5 | 215188
John, Thanks. The teaching was wonderful, I just felt this verse to be a bit of a stretch to use to make the point. (It is a pet peeve of mine and all preachers do it from time to time. They have a great teaching and then back it up with a verse that leaves me scratching my head, especially when there are plenty of verses that say it so much better). I wanted to know if this was a general understanding of these verses. A little more specifically he was saying that to be hot was to be under Grace and to be cold was to be under the Law. Luke warm was a mixture of the two. The reason God would rather you be cold is at least then you would see your need for Christ, you not being able to fulfill the Law. The person goes on to say that Paul gives the Judaizers at Galatia a stronger rebuke because of this mixing the Law with Grace than he does of Corinth for their sinful behavior. This is why God will spew them out of His mouth because to be lukewarm they have nullified Grace, but the at least in Corinth they are still under Grace. In Love, Mike PS This is as close as I can come to not cut and paste of copyright materiel |

98 | Glorious church? | Rev 1:11 | strts5 | 206114
Ephesians 3:7-11 ...to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. I was raised Pentacostal and remember the pastor talking about end times, and the enemy and to always be carefull or else... (use your imagination). I've also heard many preachers teaching doomsday and be on watch, because these other churches, etc... Are we really members of a weak, just barelly making it by church, or are we a glorious church known throught heaven that the enemy fears? Maybe I'm just on a tangent here. I visited a church last night, great worship, I always feel so buisy doing stuff at my church I can't just stop and enjoy. The sermon though, for some reason just jumped out at me like fingernails on a chalkboard. He was talking about how things are about to get get real difficult for the church and how many are going to fall away if we don't pray and do this and that, etc. I know there is truth to this in one aspect but also didn't Paul say , " many would fall away, if it were possible"? I don't know, but I am starting to feal we are much more united than many percieve, much more powerfull and glorious. Anyway, maybe I'm missing something, I would like to hear others thoughts on this. Are we weak and misserable or is it what God sais? In love, Mike |

99 | Glorious church? | Rev 1:11 | strts5 | 206125
Thank you and I agree. I think my point was all to often I feel like christians both from the pew and the pulpit describe the church like a third world country raveged by plague and starvation. I am starting to think we need to start seeing the church here and now as the beautiful bride of Christ that it is. Stop attempting to treat the field of wheat like its all tares. I'm kind of on a rant, a little frustrated. In love, Mike |
