681 | What is Secular Humanism? | John 15:5 | prayon | 15259
Humanism is a thought or attitudinal perspective rather than a specific belief system. After the time of the NT church, certain Christian leaders attempted to harmonize the Greek preoccupation with human reason with Christian teachings concererning the deity of Jesus Christ. In doing this they hoped to make Chrisitanity more palatable to potential converts in the Greek world - but in fact they did violence to Scripture and were responsible for some of the most destructive heresies ever to trouble the Christian church. The authors of these heresies, however, unwittingly moved teachers faithful to the Scriptures to prepare explicit confessions of faith still treasured by orthodox believers today: the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds. During the period referred to as the Dark Ages (Ad 476-1450), human reason continued to be elevated. The philosophy known as Sceular Humanism claims to offer hope to a world in crisis by proposing a new world religion that has no God. Based on ethical ideals that are to be developed scientifically and technologically through faith in the :innate potential" of every human bbeing. Secular Humanism asserts the human capacity for self-realization through reason. The thoughts, attitudes, and way of life vased on Secular Humanism were expressed in A Humanist Manifesto (1933) and expanded on in Humanist Manifesto II (1973). This anti-God philosophy continues to surround Christians every day through the printed and electonic media of contemprary culture. It constantly challenges out belief in God and promises found in His Word. (From: How to respond to Secular Humanism by Philip H. Lochhaas) prayon |

682 | should you tithe | Malachi | prayon | 15256
Lillie, I direct you to Malachi 3:8-10. Malachi states that if you do not tithe you are robbing God. The nation referred to here was cursed because they did not tithe. Everything that we have belongs to God. When we do not give Him our tithes we are robbing him of what is already his. Nehemiah 13:11 says that when we don't tithe we forsake the house of God. prayon

685 | Is Sex before marriage wrong? | Rom 8:38 | prayon | 14424
Sex before marriage is a sin with anyone. The bible repeatedly calls fornication (illicit sexual intercourse of unmarried persons - Funk and Wagnalls Dictionary) a sin. prayon
686 | where is paradise? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 13795
Paradise is heaven. Harper's Bible Dictionary defines it as a location or status of uninterrupted bliss. The word paradise is of Persian origin and denotes a park or forest. Since the Bible lands were often barren, it is not surprising that such and image would be meaningful. Paul speaks of Paradise in connection with his vision of the "third heaven" (2Cor 12:1-4). In Luke 23:42-43 when the thief asks Jesus to remember him when Jesus came in His kingship, Jesus replied that that day he would be with Him in paradise. I don't believe that one can be in a state of total bliss while on this earth. We are continuously going through trials and temptations to help us mature in Christ. Please explain what you mean when you say he's experiencing things where he's been before. Does he think he was reincarnated? |

687 | What does Scripture say about the Spirit | NT general Archive 1 | prayon | 13787
Greetings Joren - Welcome to the forum. You have asked many questions I will do my best. First as for speaking in tongues if you go to the quick search and type in "tongues" you will find a lot of information about tongues - if they don't answer your questions about that let me know and I will be happy to. Tongues is a gift from God (1Cor 12:8-11)- just as God didn't give the gift of healing to all He didn't give the gift of tongues to all. Now for the Holy Spirit. A good study reference is the Nave's Topical Bible. It will lead you to all the scriptures on any subject you are seeking. I recommend it highly. You can also type in Holy Spirit in the quick search. You have asked so many question on the Holy Spirit that it is pretty much impossible to answer them all in one reply. In the future it would be much simplier to ask one question at a time so that each question can be given a apprpriate responce. I will try to answer some of them. The Holy Spirit is given to us (1cor 12:7, Rom 5:5) by God and since He dwells in us (1Cor 3:16) is readily available to us but I believe that we must ask Him to work in our life. In reading Acts 19:2-6 we see that you can believe without having received the Holy Spirit, that is why I believe you must ask Him to become active in your life. Acts 7:51 tells us that we can resist the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also a teacher (Luke 12:12, John 14:26) I do not know what it is referring to when it says "supernatural witness". I would be curious who wrote the booklets you are referring to. What you mentioned about not givng very many definites and contradicting itself concerns me. I know of no basis for saying that Spirit consists of primarily emotional/physical experiences. I believe that the bible contridicts this. Just as the Spirit gives us different gifts He also gives different manifestations of Himself in individuals. If one person dances, speaks in tongues, and is very physical as you put it does not mean that he is any more spiritual than you. (I would bet that one day you will experience an outward display yourself though). You are correct in saying that we all struggle with sin and we have already seen that everyone has the Spirit who is saved. Having sin in our life does not mean that we are without the Spirit. Please feel free to ask as many more questions as you like - but please one topic per question so we can cover each topic thoroughly. prayon |

688 | Mission of Jesus | Mark 1:14 | prayon | 13775
According to the Life Application commentary what it is saying here is that Jesus had come to break the power of sin and begin God's personal reign on earth. Most of the people who heard this message were oppressed, poor, and without hope. Jesus' words were good news because they offered freedom, justice and hope. prayon

690 | IN 1Cor.3:15 Is it the person or the wor | 1 Corinthians | prayon | 13660
The works. On judgement day Christ will evaluate each person's contribution to the life of the church and will reveal the sincerity of each person's work. God will determine whether or not they have been faithful to Jesus' instructions. Good work will be rewarded, unfaithful or inferior work will be discounted. "The builder will be saved but only as through fire" means that unfaithful workers will be saved but like people escaping from a burning building. All their possessions or accomplishments will be lost. (exert from the Life Application Bible).
691 | what is the book of Romans all about? | Romans | prayon | 13658
Romans is the most comprehensive guide to the structure of the Christian faith. It is the longest and generally regarded as the most important of Paul's letters. It's purpose was to give the Romans a sample of his message before he arrived in Rome. The basis of the book is what to believe and how to believe. Paul clearly sets forth the foundations of the Christian faith and gives clear, practical guidelines for the believer. It includes teaching on sin, salvation, growth, and God's sovereignty. prayon
692 | Do tongues indicate presence of Holy Spi | 1 Cor 14:19 | prayon | 13298
Greetings Bobbie! I also agree with Nolan, Moran, and Steve. I do speak in tongues but I want to add that I didn't speak in tongues right away. I believe that it is a gift that the Lord perfects and puts into "action" when the season is right. prayon
693 | What is Christ's rest? | Matt 11:28 | prayon | 13034
People were heavy-laden and weary from carrying around their burdons of sin, excessive demands of religious leaders (Acts 23:4), oppression and persecution, and plain worry. A yoke is a heavy wooden harness that fits over the shoulders of an ox or oxen. In Jesus day a man would by an ox and take it to a carpenter who measured its shoulders and made a yoke to fit. Jesus was probably thinking back to his days as a carpenter when he used this anology. If a yoke wasn't fitted properly an ox was sure to of suffered badly, but Jesus always made the yoke to fit perfectly. Oxen were sometimes yoked together to pull the load or do the work. Christ made our yoke to fit together with Him perfectly so that He can help us with our load and give us rest. His yoke will fit us easily. When we become Christians we are immediately yoked together with Him. When we are yoked together with Him he shares our load with us and if we run out of strength he can let Him pull the entire load. We no longer have to bear our burdens alone. Therefore when we are yoked together with Him we have the ability to rest and let Him carry our many burdens. We will come short of entering God's rest when we keep some of our burdens instead of giving them to Him entirely. If we carry any of our own load of burdens we can not have rest. According to the Old Testament the Sabbath was a day of rest (Exo. 20:8-11). You were not to do any work whatsoever on a Sunday. You were even forbidden to carry more than a pound (which means you could take a pen to church but you couldn't take your bbible :o)..) In Heb 4:9-11 we are told again to give our burdens to Christ and rest, but it our choice whether we enter into that rest. |

694 | Prerequisite-infallibility? | 1 Cor 12:27 | prayon | 12525
Dear Charis welcome home! Prophet: a person who communicates a divine message or an "oracle" (utterance) received from God. (Eerdmans Bible Dictionary); A persone who serves as a channel of communication between human and divine worlds (Harpers Bible Dictionary) If there are no more prophets then it must mean that God is not communicating with us any more???? Apostle: An official representative charged with a commission (Eerdmans); An apostle is "one who is sent out". An apostle is a personal messenger or envoy, commisioned to transmit the message or otherwise carry out the instructions of the commissioning agent. I guess if there are not any apostles any more then God is not sending anyone out to deliver his good news???????? In summary, I guess in certain ways we are all on our own??????? Something wrong with this picture? |

695 | What is the law of liberty? | James 2:12 | prayon | 12007
As Christians we are saved by grace, not faith and not by keeping the old laws, but as Christians, we are required to obey Christ. God's grace does not cancel our duty to obey Him, it gives it a new basis. It is not longer an external set of rules but it a "law of liberty".
696 | No medical/spiritual need to circumcise? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 11761
Actually there can be medical reasons for circumcision if you want to acknowledge them. the procedure is said by some to promote better hygiene and prevent inflammation. Also circumcision has proven to reduce the risk of penile cancer. The uncircumsized male runs a much higher risk of this rare form of cancer than does the circumsised man. It is also done to preserve a man's body image that is consistant with his peers since circumcision is such a common practice in the United States. On the other hand there are surgical risks in the circumcision as with any other surgery. In addition an uncircumsised male is believed to experience much greater physical pleasure during sexual intercourse. An RN
697 | How much submitting must a woman do? | 1 Corinthians | prayon | 11641
I agree with both Debbie and There. If she is under physical abuse she should leave, even if the abuse is not bad - it will get worse. One problem that women run into in this situation is the apology afterwards. The man ususally always promises to never let it happen again, he loves her so much. He then treats her very well for a short time and she loves him so she wants to believe him. She accepts his apology and the whole cycle begins over again. Each cycle will get a little bit worse. As was said earlier she prpbably won't have a lot of friends because of the confidentuality issue mentioned but also because the husband won't have as much control and he needs to maintain firm control. It is very hard for a woman to walk away from someone she loves and feels truly needs her, especially if she is a Christian and honors her covenant with the man. However Christ would not want her to stay. One more thing I would add on emotional abuse. I agree with the statement Debbie made that if the woman is a Christian she has an advantage. However, in this type of situation her self confidence will be continually attacked and it is extremely hard to maintain a high opinion of oneself. Her having self confidence is what is in question in the relationship. The man does not want her to have any. He doesn't want her to think that she can live without him. I can testify to these things because I went through a abusive relationship and had to leave. It was very, very hard. If this woman or you would like you can contact me at prayon@spocom.com. I would be most happy to "talk" to her. prayon |

698 | Why did Gideon test the Lord (vv 36-40)? | Judg 6:37 | prayon | 11633
Was Gideon really testing God, or was he simply asking God for more encouragement? Either way, though his motive was right (to obey God and defeat the enemy), his method was not that great. Gideon seems to know that his requests might displease God (6:39), and yet he still demanded 2 miracles (6:37,39) even after he saw fire from the rock (6:21). It is true to make good decisions we need facts. Gideon had the facts but he still hesitated, he wanted more proof. Demanding extra signs is an indicator of unbelief. Fear often keeps us from taking action when we should. Visible signs are unnecessary if they only confirm what we already know. We should ask for assurance if we are not sure about a matter, but if we know it to be God's will then we shouldn't need more assurance from Him. |

699 | Mount Sinai or Zion? | Heb 12:22 | prayon | 11535
Many awesome things happened on Mt. Sinai. It was the mountain that the law was delivered to Moses and the covenant between God and Isreal was sealed and where God revealed his presence. It has also been called the Mountain of God, or Mount Horeb. The mountain played a significant role in the spiritual developement of Moses. The Lord's presence on this peak came to symbolize divine protection. Paul uses Mount Sinai to symbolize the Old Testament. Mount Zion (or Sion in the KJV) was another favorite abode of God. Psalm 2:6 refers to Zion as "my (God's) holy hill", the "holy habitation of the Most High (Ps. 46:4), "Mount Zion which He loves", is where God "built his sanctuary like the high heavens (Ps 78:68-69), and Psalm 48:1-2 calls it His Holy mountain, beautiful in elevation. It is also where David's tomb is located and where the upper room of the last supper took place. On numerous occations it is referred to as a metaphor for security and protection (Ps 125). The New Testament continues this imagery using the term "heavenly Jerusalem" in reference to the church (Heb 12:22),and the gospel message (1Pet 2:6). In the New Testament it represents the newness of true worship and the "new Jerusalem" where Christ's redeemed will live with Him. John also states in Rev 14:1 that he looked and saw Christ standing with the 144,000. I would choose to live on Mt Zion for the reasons mentioned above. prayon |

700 | What does the blood of Abel speak? | Heb 12:24 | prayon | 11534
Abel's blood cried for revenge, it was the blood of sin. Christ's blood cried for forgiveness. It is the blood of sacrifice. The ultimate sacrifice that gave us the new covenant, that is Christ shed His blood for us and our sin's.
