61 | Life of Philip the evangelist? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 114197
Going with the original question in the initial post, "What does the life of Philip the evangelist teach us?" The overall most important lesson I get from Philip's example (his life) is the fact that he was ready and willing to serve in whatever capacity he was needed. He succeeded initially in small things, apparently was effective and was given bigger responsibilities and executed them in great style. So we should strive to be the same way. I for one readily admit I find this tough to do. My natural inclination is to think up excuses as to why I can't do something new for my Lord. I start thinking of all that I'm already doing, my job, my marriage, my personal time. And then I see something like that wonderful movie, The Passion and I feel ashamed. How about some of you folks? What does the life of Philip mean to you? God bless. |

62 | what is Enigma of Evil? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 114580
Where do you get such a phrase? I don't believe it's from the Bible. Can you tell us what Bible related product is is from? We really need the context wherein you got this so as to respond. Otherwise you're just talking about another puzzle, the meaning of Enigma. It's also helpful if you could provide more information about yourself and your background by updating your profile to the left of your screen. God bless. |

63 | prophets role in the church today Eph 4 | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 114584
They should be considered "mouthpieces" for God IF they're speaking from God's Word, same as their primary function in the OT. There most of them had some measure of miraculous powers available to them whereas in today's world, miracles are manifested directly from God, hopefully through our prayers. God bless.
64 | A Study of Joseph, Jesus' earthly father | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 114606
This subject has been discussed before although the Bible provides very little information about Joseph. It seems the Lord doesn't intend for us to know much more about Him. It could be inferred that kind of knowledge would eclipse Him as His Heavenly Father. I noticed you've posted 25 questions/notes to the Forum since Nov 2001 but we still don't have a profile on you. Is there any way we can entice you to tell us more about your personality and what's important to you? Tell us about your religious background by update your user profile to the left of your screen. God bless. |

I can think of one thing that would please God. Hopefully, your folks would be interested in the benefits of dating and finding the perfect mate who's going to help each one to Heaven. Another item of interest would be those things in dating to avoid. What are some of the modern dangers to avoid? How far can one go to attract a mate and yet be pleasing to God? Yes, everyone responds with "What would Jesus do?" or WWJD but how does that help the single having a tough time finding the ideal mate. |

66 | Study Bible Forum or Bible Philosophy | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 114937
First of all, let me apologize to the Forum in general. My posts seem to have caused quite a bit of controversy and that is certainly NOT what I was after. So, what am I after? I guess if you were to pin me down and put me in a pigeonhole, I’d probably label myself as a philosopher, much in the same spirit as my dad. In a lot of ways I imitate his lifestyle, including his way of looking at things in the world, studying other people and how they interact with each other and with our God in Heaven. I know and realize there's probably not many people on the Forum but I like the ideas and the brainstorming that result from it. I have studied the Bible quite a bit and although I’m not particularly good at quoting book, chapter and verse, I do read a good portion of God’s Word every day. As I do have a penchant for looking for the philosophical side of a particular issue or topic, that’s where I spend most of my time, looking for such opportunities. So, I like to ask questions like “How,” “Why,” and “How about another way of looking it” just like ancient Socrates. As you can imagine this “talent” I have is a little bit of a burden to people that love me, like my precious wife and my parents. I’m quite literally serious here: To this day, my brother, sisters and parents still say I ask too many questions. But I like to motivate people to think, to look behind the curtain and dare to ask Why to the boldest person. Yes, it gets me in trouble but it also makes me a good problem solver. The most important ingredient I’ve found to make a success out of this mess I see in my life is to love people, real love for their souls, love for them to reach their potential like our Father in Heaven has for you and me. It also helps to be open minded and open hearted to their position on a issue, listen to their side of the story completely before responding…now that’s tough, I know. As I size up the “field of play” we have on this Forum, we have plenty of folks who are very, very good at research and know God’s Word quite well. Their posts are filled to overflowing with scriptures and what they think about them. Sometimes they misapply those scriptures but don’t we all on an occasional basis. Sometimes we look at something one way for years and then discover at some future time a new perspective from someone’s first review of that thing i.e. scripture. We come away thinking “What was I thinking when I concluded that way about that particular thing?” Well, again back to that field business. I’ve recently resolved to try to cite at least just a few more scriptures with my statements/posts to the Forum but you’ll have to forgive me for the few times that I fail to do so. You see just as EdB discovered with my recent question about Paul scolding Peter for his sin of discrimination against Gentiles, the answers aren’t always in the Bible, especially when it’s about one of the How or Why questions. I really do appreciate you folks who are so good about quoting from the scriptures with book, chapter and verses but I’ll continue to hold down this end of the field with my conclusions and inferences but this I promise. I’ll ALWAYS TRY to make certain these statements/conclusions, etc. are in fact based on general Bible principles and hold true to the Spirit of the Bible. If it’s anything I’ve learned to appreciate in life, I’ve learned there’s tremendous value to the whole team concept. I may consider myself in the middle of the road like most people do on most subjects in life, most especially Bible topics and religion in general. But we need to appreciate those folks on both sides of that road for they’re there for a reason. They sincerely believe the way they do (at least most of the time) because they’ve studied the issues and concluded that’s where they need to be. So with that promise being made, if at any time, you disagree or think my statement in the future needs tweaking to make it just right, please feel free to post your statement to that effect. That’s why we’re here. One last thing, just as a reminder. We’re all human, every single one of us. None of us are going to get out of this world alive and take anything with us but our souls. So let’s love one another and do a lot more forgiving and a lot less griping and complaining. It will go a long way toward getting us to where we want to go after this world is over. God bless you all. |

68 | 2nd ? Did Spirit save them? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115169
I don't see any scriptures to support the idea of the Apostles being saved with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Further in this area, we do see the folks (Cornelius and his family) in Acts 10, as getting the same treatment by the Holy Spirit. The big difference here we see that Cornelius and his family also do get themselves baptized and added to the church, AFTER being baptized by the Holy Spirit. The main purpose we see in the manifestation of all the miraculous powers in this first phase of Christianity was to confirm the words as coming from God as in Mark 16:20. These powers were bestowed upon individuals in one of two ways: 1) from the Holy Spirit as in Acts 2 OR 2) through the laying of hands from the Apostles as in Acts 8:18, 1 Tim 4:14 or 2 Tim 1:6. The Plan of Salvation which gets people added to the church was instituted for all mankind after the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord in accordance with His Last Will and Testament. Its purpose is quite different from the baptism of the Holy Spirit as cited above. Thus, we see the endowment of miraculous powers DID NOT necessarily mean the people receiving these powers were saved already. Although we do not see the Apostles actually being baptised, neither do we see their being saved without being baptized. We do see the need for baptism with Cornelius in Acts 10. God bless you in your study of God's Word. |

Please Gentlemen, let me apologize yet again for causing this controversy. I'm hoping you've noticed in some of my more recent posts to the Forum, I've been trying to cite more scriptures in support of my statements, especially when the discussion DOES NOT center around those proverbial Why questions. But in my defense of my original position, I still anticipate the "surging well" within my soul will cause me to continue to look for and answer those topics with the Why question in their background. So, I can only say, I have been humbled at least somewhat by all these posts from you all and for that I'm thankful. Now, Hank, I must follow up on the few challenges I've issued recently WITH scriptures to back them up. I've not seen your responses to those challenges and would appreciate your sharing your wisdom and experience with us on them. The posts I'm talking about are 114616 and 114930. I have a few more I've been "roasting" in my little brain and hope to have them posted soon. See ya and God bless. |

70 | Get'g the right message from our Bibles? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115540
Just got this very interesting article by E-Mail from a good friend and thought I would share. It asks some very probing questions. Be sure to notice the scripture in support. God bless all who study and obey God's Word. IS CHRIST OUR CENTRAL FOCUS? We have scrutinized the Bible to the point that we have it all laid out in reasonable and logical principles. We have dismantled it into theological sections. We have made it an answer book to life's problems and a cure-all for what emotionally and mentally bothers us. It has become a manual filled with instructions on how to live. It provides us with principles that will guide us into God's favor, thus insuring us of His presence and power. Manfred Haller writes: "If you want to know what is in an automobile, the parts it contains and how it was constructed, disassemble it. Just do not try to drive the disassembled vehicle, though, because it won't move an inch. It will have lost all its power, functionality and any purpose it had. All the components belonging to a complete automobile will be lying before you, but it is still not a car. Dissected truths are no longer spiritual truths; they are ineffective, lifeless theorems." "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life." (John 5:39-40) Could it be that most Christians have a love affair with the Bible rather than with Jesus? The Scriptures are VITAL! Scriptures reveal Jesus! If we are in love with Jesus then why is it we dismantle the Bible into theological opinions, then talk about those segregated segments with more excitement, interest and intensity than we talk about Jesus Himself? We even form fortresses around our opinions and call them churches. If we can form alliances we call them denominations. Jesus is not our rallying cry! Is this why the Christian community is having a diminishing influence on our cultural direction? "Begin seeing Christ behind everything. When you finally understand that Christ is everything you need, then you will have become truly Christocentric. Then will you share with the Father the most precious thing He has - His Son. Christ will become your only perspective, your only hope, your only possession, and your only interest. Everything else will fade into insignificance." (MANFRED HALLER- "CHRIST AS ALL IN ALL") For example, we normally present the Gospel as a message of repentance from sin. If we want to go to heaven and miss out on hell then we need to ask for forgiveness. If we want a meaningful and purposeful life, we need God's grace. He will give us forgiveness, redemption, and life everlasting. God has a wonderful plan for our life. Note; the paragraph above has man as God's central focus. Jesus is God's central focus. Everything happens through Jesus, by Jesus, and for Jesus. Christ and Christ alone transforms people, the results of this transformation do not save people only Jesus Christ saves. We seem to focus on the transformation rather than Christ Himself. "The New Testament gospel begins and ends with Jesus Christ. Christ Himself is the gospel. The gospel in a single pronouncement is, "he who has the Son has life!' Another one like it is, "if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature. …The gospel calls men and women to believe in Christ. This means acceptance that God has placed Him in the center, that God will judge us on our relationship to Christ, that our present and our future depends on our kinship with Him." (MANFRED HALLER) We place too much emphasis on the results Christ brings about that we inadvertently present a gospel of works rather than a gospel focused on Christ Himself. Jesus is not coming to gather a brood of cloned replicas that do as He did. When Jesus returns He is coming to receive the Body, the Church, the Vessel through which He will express the fullness of His deity. Written by Terry Jarbo |

72 | what does slain in the spirit mean? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115491
I cranked those two key words, slain and spirit and came up with one single verse as follows: Rev 5:6 And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. It doesn't seem to match or even come close to satisfying your query but these search engines are great aren't they? You should give them a try; it's to the right of your screen. |

73 | Rom. 12:1-3 | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115829
In my mind, the only real way we can renew ourselves every day is to spend more and more of our time in God's Word. In this way, God will help us transform our thinking and our priorities into His thoughts and priorities. And of course, we'll be better prepared to fend off the temptations to sin. What do you think? And God bless.
74 | who benefits most from prayer? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115857
I have to agree with EdB. I think we can gain a lot from our example in the Apostle Paul as cited in the following: 2 Cor 12:6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say. 7To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. With all the tremendous good things Paul did AND the tremendous sacrifices he made to be a christian, I would think he above all other humans on this planet since his lifetime would have deserved some relief but the Lord didn't see fit to give it to him. Whenever I read these words I shrink with embarrassment at my feeble attempts to be a christian. Also I tend to complain about the tiny "thorns" in my life just like everyone else in the world. ALL of us should feel ashamed. We should be just thankful to be alive and well in such a country as this with all the freedoms and blessings we enjoy. I hope this gives you comfort and God bless. |

78 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117520
There is some tendancy for some folks to "fall in love" with a particular version like you're seeing in these posts. And there's nothing wrong with that idea as long as it's a simple preference for a particular version as Hank mentions. However, there is a potential danger as has been mentioned also. ALL current versions of the Bible have come to us as translations prepared by men and should be treated as such. All men are human and make an ocassional mistake when translating. Most of these errors are minor and have to do with the grammatical changes when translating from one language to another. I do think it's significant enough to emphasize that the Lord did protect the overall message of His Word BUT He didn't see fit to protect an indestructible copy of the original "autograph" version of each book of the Bible. If He had it would undoubtedly have turned into an idol as your question suggests. That's exactly the kind of thinking our Lord wants us to avoid. He wants us to internalize His Words into our hearts and minds so we live our lives as living monuments to His glory. But in order to come to a common understanding of just what does His Word have for us in specific guidance, we must go back to the translations we have. The three you've cited in your question is a good start for all christian's libraries but I would suggest adding the NKJV. Most all modern translations are fairly good but they all must be approached with some caution as they are prepared by men, usually several dozen men coming from a wide variety of faiths and denominations. The bottom line is to keep an open mind, study constantly with the resolve to see what all God's Word has to say on any one topic. One more caution: we must maintain perspective with the issue of the Old Testament and the New Testament. When we see an obvious conflict like marriage and divorce contrasted by the two, we must allow the NT to "outrank" the OT, as Jesus took the OT to the cross with him because He fulfilled it. The Law of Moses and the OT has no authority to guide us in our spiritual relationship. HOWEVER, the OT is an incredibly valuable document for study and understanding the NT. God bless. |

79 | Gods view of David vs. Saul | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117539
Personally, I think it was because David's heart was more in tune with God's heart. Whereas Saul showed himself to be very shallow and not very committed. Probably his height and good looks got him what he wanted through his life, whereas David was humble, both in statue and with a "ruddy complexion." Whatever the reasons, we need to follow David's example and keep our heart and attitude humble and submissive to God.
80 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 117549
Study the whole Bible and you should clearly see that God has given this dispensation of Godliness over to His Son. I agree with Kalos in that God's Word most certainly DOES NOT contradict itself but He does expect us to "graduate" from the Law of Moses and the OT as shown in Col 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Matt 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. The main theme throughout the Book of Hebrews is the superiority of this Law of Liberty as provided in the NT compared to that in the OT. This contrast is discussed briefly by Jesus in Mark 10:1 Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again. 2The Pharisees came and asked Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" testing Him. 3And He answered and said to them, "What did Moses command you?" 4They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her." 5And Jesus answered and said to them, "Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6But from the beginning of the creation, God "made them male and female.' 7"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8and the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." 10In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same matter. 11So He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." We all know about the contrast about vengence with "eye for an eye and tooth for tooth" in the OT, but Jesus says forgive your neighbor and bless them that curse you. Kalos or anyone else...how do you reconcile these scriptures with your insistance that the OT is still applicable to us today?? There's just no way this position can be defended IF you consider the WHOLE Bible on this subject. I do hope and pray you'll reconsider but I also pray God will bless you with an open mind. |
