461 | Why do they prey for the deads salvation | 1 Cor 3:15 | MJH | 143394
Regarding your statement that "removing them (the Apocrypha) was a sin:" I would say that if they were never even added no sin was committed. Considering their source, adding them, however, WAS and is a sin (Proverbs 30:5-6, Matthew 15:7-9, 1 Timothy 6:3-5, Revelation 22:18). I know, you had a fever; but it bugs me when people use scripture to make a point that the scripture they are quoting doesn’t make. Taking them 1 at a time. Proverbs 30:5-6 This is speaking about the Torah, or the first 5 books of the Bible. Some might argue (wrongly) that this statement also refers to prophetic words spoken by God to prophets after Moses but before Solomon. Then others have the strange idea to apply this to post Solomon times. The statement can not apply to post Solomon for several reasons the most important being that if it did, then all post Solomon books would be non-Biblical (“do not add to his words”). (The words: “Every word of God proofs true” is universal of course.) Matt 15:7-9: This statement is clearly speaking about the Oral Torah (Law). Here Jesus is stating that these so called Oral Laws were not from the Torah as the teachers of the Torah taught, but actually from men. Jesus spent much of His time teaching the correct interpretation of the Torah and the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures. Again, these can not make your point about the Apocrypha books which were before Jesus time. He isn’t even speaking of written texts, but of oral laws. 1 Timothy 6:3-4: This one is obviously not a refutation of the Apocrypha books. Rev 22:18-19: Here we have two things: 1) is this statement about the book of Revelation? or the whole Bible? If just Revelation, then why is the word translated into English as “book” and not “letter?”; if he means whole Bible, then why does he mention this in a letter to the churches. I assume he wasn’t attaching the whole Bible to the letter. The best understanding is to say the words apply to the book or letter of Revelation. However; other Bible passages make it clear that God’s Word isn’t to be changed (texts that usually refer to the Torah (first 5 books) but can be extrapolated to the whole accepted Bible, but still doesn’t answer the Apocrypha question.) 2) This text was written WAY after the Apocrypha, so even if it refers to the whole Bible, the Apocrypha was written before, not after John’s letter. There is no way one can use scripture to disprove or prove the Apocrypha EXCEPT when the books in the Apocrypha contradict accepted scripture, which many do. I am not a scholar of the Apocrypha, but I do know that many books add to our understanding of the Jews and the times. They were known by the apostles and Jesus and the general public. The Jews celebrated, the holiday instituted in Maccabees (Festival of Lights or Hanukah) which Jesus also celebrated and called Himself the Light of the World during the festival. All this and still I agree that the Apocrypha are not to be accepted as authoritative God given scripture. Studying for a mid-term? Seems to me after reading your many posts you ought to be giving the mid-term. God Bless MJH |

463 | Sex before marriage and lesbian passages | 1 Cor 6:16 | MJH | 157956
When I was in my early 20's and working at a factory for the summer, there were men there that boasted of many things. When it became clear that I was a virgin, and they believed me, and that I was proud of it, some of them were amazed. One of them who was probably the most sexually driven asked me privately why I was proud to be a virgin. I had the opportunity to explain what a husband/wife relationship could look like, and that cheating on my future wife was still cheating. But then I said something that really struck him to the heart in a convicting way. I said, "I can be what you are any day I choose. It would not be difficult. But you can never be what I am." To this he had to agree. So, before I was married, I reminded those who thought they were something for having sex, that the REAL triumph was in being able to wait. Anyone can lose their virginity, but only a strong man can keep it for his spouse. MJH |

Azure Thanks for that post. I did not think of it this way. I normally wouldn't agree to the tattoo thing, but I can certainly see a purpose beyond what I had previously considered. I'm still not convinced for myself, but I could not argue with someone in this situation doing it. MJH |

465 | why bible says the body is the temple | 1 Cor 6:19 | MJH | 229896
The Temple or Tabernacle was the place where God’s special Presence was. It was highly protected because for man to get too close he would die. God is Holy and we are not. The reason for the Temple was for people to have the ability to draw near to God safely. Also, God desires to dwell among His people. In the first verses of Leviticus we learn that “if a man desires” to draw near to God this is how…. It is up to us to desire to draw near and Psalm 84 is a good Psalm to read about what that experience may have been like. “My soul yearns and even faints for your courts.” “Now a people who were once far off are now brought near.” The apostle Paul (Eph 2:13). Even Gentiles are able to draw near to God, but how if they are nowhere near the Temple, and what about us in our day with no Temple? On the day of Pentecost the Spirit came with power as a symbol of a flame, the symbol of God’s presence. Remember in Exodus, God’s presence led them by fire at night and a cloud by day. Pentecost was a festival that particularly remembered the giving of the Ten Commandments where the people saw God’s voice (yes, “saw His voice”). This was the time and place when, not only did they receive the Ten Commandments, but the Law and the Tabernacle instructions. In Acts, at the very start of that Festival that remembers the time God’s Presence descended on the mountain and the giving of the Law, the Spirit comes as a flame onto each disciple. This is significant in that the dwelling of God is now present within the children of God. Even though we are still in This World of sin and death, we have a place in the Age to Come on account of Jesus actively serving as the High Priest in that venue. Prior to his sacrifice and service, the Spirit could not come in this manner (I wish I could explain why more clearly, but Jesus does say that the Spirit ‘cannot come’ unless He ascends.) Therefore, with the Spirit dwelling in us (in some mystical way) we are collectively the Temple of God. Would you bring shrine prostitutes into the Temple on earth? NO!, Then do not with your own body. Would you contaminate the Temple by treating it poorly, harshly, disrespectfully? No! Then treat your body well. I’m sure in years to come I will understand better. Maybe others can elaborate or know more clearly? |

467 | Receiving Communion if not married | 1 Cor 11:24 | MJH | 186243
Would getting married in the church now be a sin, or would it be wrong to do so when you are already married in God's eyes? If this matter is of such importance to your spouse and for you it is only an unnecessary act, then it might be best to follow him in this matter. For example, to you this is probably a 2 on a scale of 10. But for him it's a 10. I agree with Doc, who gave a great response, but based only on the text you typed in your question and knowing nothing else, I would encourage you to get married in the church as soon as possible. MJH P.S. – Doc and I agree most the time…except when he isn’t correct ;-) |

468 | Baptism in order to be saved? | 1 Cor 12:13 | MJH | 181512
Baptism was a very Jewish ritual that was practiced for hundreds of years before Jesus and is still practiced today in the Jewish life. To keep this post short, I'll speak only of the baptism into the community. Gentiles who wanted to become a Jew had to perform certain actions and make certain pronouncements, but in the end, they were "baptized" dying to their old self and being re-born as a Jew. This was how things were done in Jesus’ day and prior. When Paul and the Apostles began a knew sect of Judaism called "The Way" or Christianity, they did not continue to convert a person to becoming a "Jew", but rather accepted Gentiles into the community of the Messiah based on belief in the Messiah, accepting His yoke, and being baptized. A Gentile died to his old "ways" and was re-born into a knew life into the community of believers. Baptism has always been seen as an outward symbol of an inward reality. Both in the Jewish life and Christian. For Jews to enter the Temple and go near the Holy God, one needed to be "holy" or "ritually clean." Everyone was baptized every time they wanted to enter the Temple. This act did not clean them or make them Holy (you had to be ritually clean, or holy, before entering the Mikvah aka Baptismal). If a person dies before baptism and enters the Heavenly Temple, they are still made holy by Jesus sacrifice and can enter the presence of God based on that fact. Missing the baptism will not cause a person to loose their right standing before God. In Judaism, when a person dies the people doing the burial will get “baptized” before they work on the body, they will clean and finally "baptize" the dead body and bury the person, and finally get "baptized" again after the burial. They did this to prepare the dead for the coming of the Messiah in the world to come. (Paul speaks of this rite when he argues for the Resurrection and asks, "If there is no resurrection then why are people being baptized for the dead?") The people doing the burial are doing all of this because they have faith that this person will rise again and will enter the presence of God. I hope this helps some rather than confuse. MJH |

470 | What does judgement look like | 2 Cor 5:10 | MJH | 214056
John, To be honest with you, if I were to throw my two cents in at this point it would only serve to make matters worse. We are discussing with a new member who is very strong in some views that are outside the main. This, of course, I kind of like personally. It gives a chance to force someone to defend such understandings. If I jump in right now, you and I both know that it would make this discussion get a bit out of hand. I don't hold to the "main" on how to interpret the Law and what is applicable to Christians today and bringing this up right now may not be helpful. You'll notice I have stepped back from most of those discussions for awhile, because based on my past posts, one might think that the Law is the only thing I can discuss. Plus, I'm here to learn as much as share and beating one drum isn’t being helpful I don't think. MJH PS- Between you and me and those looking in. Bill0624 needs to be pressed on why he thinks the Messiah would or could disagree with or overturn Moses and still be the Messiah. After all, the most often repeated phrase in the entire Bible is, “and God told Moses to say….” |

Bill, I'm not sure if you are here still or not, but there are good reasons why I'd rather have a private discussion should you desire. I'm not even sure if this thread is active anymore, but in either case, I still offer an email discussion. If that is at all of interest, then let me know and one of us can share an email address. I think for the forum, this discussion is pretty well worn out. As I said earlier, trying to debate so many people at one time gets too confusing. MJH |

472 | Is tithing a command for chriatians? | 2 Cor 9:7 | MJH | 214816
keliy, Tithing aside, your post here concerning dispensations got my juices flowing and it's hard not to get overly passionate. Sorry. Also, sorry if this is post is not in line with the forum rules; it's a bit of a question I agree, so delete "me" if you must, I'd understand. That being said, I must disagree in the strongest of terms. I believe that your post is an example of interpreting the Scriptures based on your theology rather than deriving your theology from Scripture. (I appreciate you, keliy, so don't take that in the wrong spirit.) You said, "between the Cross of Christ and the Crown of Christ, which is referred to as the dispensation of Grace." Under that thinking then what pray tell was the "old testament" assembly under? A dispensation of gracelessness? law? covenant? onerous stipulations not possible to follow? sadness and depression? Ps. 119 didn't seem to be too unhappy with the Law. Ps. 84 didn't find Tabernacle/Temple worship something to distain. The Old Testament and the Covenants are grace upon grace. Where is there anything but Grace? From Gen 12, and the promises (quoted by Paul as the Good News) to Mt. Sinai. It's all grace! From Joshua's conquests to the exile, it's all grace. The faithfulness of God to His promises is grace. The coming of Messiah who is the Word made flesh, is all grace. Without grace, we are nothing and have nothing. We are a doomed people more pitied than any. With Grace we shine like stars. It's not a dispensation accounted to those after the cross; it's the whole blooding story. You said, "the Church is not mentioned in the Old Testament." Gen 28:3, promises that “you will be the church” (qahal; kaw-hawl strongs 6951). Deut 5:22; God's speaks to the [church] from the mountain. The "church" was formed as a distinct body at Mt. Sinai. You can check the Greek word for church (ekklesia; ek-klay-see'-ah Strongs 1577) and see that it is the word used to translate Assembly/congregation in the Hebrew Scriptures. Pentecost was the festival remembering what God did at Mt. Sinai, when his voice was seen as sparks or lightening. They saw God's voice go out from the Mount. At Pentecost in Acts 2, we see the "wind" of God (a.k.a. Holy Spirit) and the tongues of fire rest upon the Apostles while they are at the Temple for the festival of Pentecost. The same thing happens to them that happened at Mt. Sinai. Also, 3000 are baptized into their number (3000 were killed after the Golden Calf). The "church" has a start, or maybe a new start. What has changed is that the Holy Spirit came in power and the Law was written upon the heart (Jer. 31; New Covenant). And soon the door swings open for the Gentiles, who before had no hope and were far off...now are now brought near. They are "grafted" into the olive branch that is Israel, or that is the Assembly of God formed at Mt. Sinai. One church, One people. (An aside: tradition, not Scripture itself, has said that God’s voice went out at Mt. Sinai in the languages of all 70 nations….the 70 nations seen in Gen 11; they all heard God in their own tongue all over the Earth give the Decalogue. This may be only a tradition, but it’s interesting that the same things does actually happen and get recorded as happening on the same day that the first event was recorded; on Pentecost.) There is no "dispensation." There is only an opening of the eye and heart that embraces the Gentile into the community and witnesses the mystery of God, that being "How can a Holy God dwell with an unholy man?" The incarnation is the mystery (Among other mysteries hidden in the heart of God.) You said, “That the Gentiles were to be "saved" was no Mystery. (Rom 9:24-30). The "Mystery" was God's purpose to unite Jews and Gentiles into The Church, towards the formation of His Body, The Church. (1 Cor. 12:12-13).” And here you are spot on correct! Thanks for the chance to rant a bit. MJH |

473 | Porn in spouse overcome thru fasting? | Galatians | MJH | 212619
Bandaid, My heart really goes out to you! I am so sorry for your suffering on account of this. Your husband’s struggle is very common among us men and seeing the pain it causes just one wife is motivation for many others to stay pure. I can't offer more than the others Biblically; they have done so well, so I thought I'd tell you what we have done practically. I have bsafeonline (b-safe online) installed on my home and office computer. At the office I do not know the password so when I am alone I have no access. At home the temptation is far less with children around, and our computer is in the family room. I like this software because all others I tried I could “get around” easily, but with all my computer knowledge I have not been able to break this one or get around it. Your husband may not be willing at other places, but for the safety of your children and yourself, you can put something like this (and I recommend this one) on your home computers and retain the password for only yourself. Also, if your husband will not go to marriage counseling, then I'd suggest going alone, but find a really good one. Get references from couples who had success. There are good and not so good counselors just like any other thing. I truly hope you find respite from this suffering. God bless, MJH |

474 | Justified by faith or His faithfullness? | Gal 2:16 | MJH | 174573
Justified by faith in Christ? or Justified by the faithfulness of Christ? David Stern in his commentary on the New Testament likes to translate this (and other passages in the Bible that say the same thing) as "justified by the faithfulness of the Messiah Jesus." rather than "faith in the Messiah.” It seems to me to be a more accurate translation more fitting with the whole of scripture. We are justified because of the Messiah's faithfulness and not our own, and when we place our trust in Him, his faithfulness is imputed to us. I wanted to know if any Greek scholars, or those with the time to look into it, can provide an argument for supporting or opposing this translation. MJH |

476 | Translation of the Greek word "aion" | Eph 3:9 | MJH | 214817
Searcher56, You said, "when there is a new heaven and earth (Rev 21:1), there will be no more time since there is no need of the sun or of the moon to shine" From a purely philosophical perspective, it is not possible to have matter (flesh and blood, soil and water, etc.) without the existence of time. If you have any "matter" you must also have "time." Logically it's impossible for matter to exist without time. It's also true that you can not have time apart from matter, but that is much more difficult to grasp and this isn't the place for that kind of discussion I'm guessing. MJH |

479 | Feasts and Sabbath - still observe? | Col 2:17 | MJH | 157062
Are the feasts and the Sabbath a shadow of Jesus, and therefore good at showing/helping us to know Him? (ie. Jesus is the body that casts the shadow.) OR, are we to understand (as the NASB adds the word "mere") that the feasts and Sabbath are unnecessary and done away with since Jesus came, He now replaces the feasts and Sabbath because He is our Sabbath rest? I have been searching for some years on the relationship we have with the Law of God given through Moses. Recently I feel I am arriving at a new understanding that contradicts my upbringing. I eagerly desire to understand God’s Word correctly, and therefore I am asking for help in this. Since the topic is far to big to discuss as a whole, I thought asking this one question would at least help me in this one area. Thanks for the help. MJH |

Who were the "Freeman", the "God Fearers" and the "Proselytites"? It is the “Freeman” that I am most interested in. I remember parts of a talk I heard about who these people were in 1st Century Israel, but have forgotten. I can not seem to find the answer now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
