41 | Why translations use LORD not Yahweh? | Ex 3:15 | Michael Draves | 198602
Check if the editors of your Bibles have in the introduction why LORD is used for the name of God revealed to Moses. The four letters of this name are sometimes called the tetragrammaton. To be sure not to violate the commandment not to take the name of God in vain Jewish people avoid saying the name. When the masoretes added vowel pointing to their scrolls they used the vowels from Adonai, meaning Lord, when the tetragrammaton occurs. This was to prevent someone from pronouning the divine name by mistake. Following this tradition LORD is used for the divine name. The name Jehovah is a result of trying to pronounce the yod-hey-vav-hey consonants of the divine name with vowels from Adonai.

There are some slight differences between the printed Brenton (1851 Ninth reprint in 2001 by Hendrickson 0-913573-44-2) and the copy on www.studylight.org the word before a slash is from Brenton. You can find different Septuagint texts at http://www.kalvesmaki.com/LXX/Texts.htm#Translations . If you want a printed copy of a book in the Septuagint that has a critical apparatus I suggest you see if the Göttingen series copy is ready. |

Read the whole chapter. Did you make a vow to give something to God, that a levitical priest set a value on and now you want to keep. If so you could pay the value plus a fifth more or a 20 percent penalty to keep it. Do a search on the right for TITH and it will show the discussions on the tithe and tithing. |

45 | why is 3:00 in the bible important | Mark 15:34 | Michael Draves | 198227
Do you mean "the third hour" or "three o'clock". Time in the New Testament usually is listed as hours of the day after sunrise and hours of the night after sunset. Sometimes a "watch" is given. You can do some research if you want to find out if John is using a different standard for measuring time. The Amplified Bible makes it easier for us to see the approximate time of day meant: Matt 20:9 And those who had been hired at the eleventh hour (five o'clock) came and received a denarius each. Mark 6:48 (Matt 14:25) And having seen that they were troubled and tormented in [their] rowing, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night [between 3:00-6:00 a.m.] He came to them, walking [directly] on the sea. And He acted as if He meant to pass by them, Mark 15:25 And it was the third hour (about nine o'clock in the morning) when they crucified Him. [Ps. 22:14-16.] Mark 15:33 (Matt 27:45, Luke 23:44) And when the sixth hour (about midday) had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (about three o'clock). Mark 15:34 (Matt 27:46) And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?--which means, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me [deserting Me and leaving Me helpless and abandoned]? [Ps. 22:1.] Luke 12:38 "Whether he comes in the second watch, or even in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. John 1:39 He said to them, Come and see. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they remained with Him that day. It was then about the tenth hour (about four o'clock in the afternoon). John 4:6 And Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, tired as He was from His journey, sat down [to rest] by the well. It was then about the sixth hour (about noon). John 4:52 So he asked them at what time he had begun to get better. They said, Yesterday during the seventh hour (about one o'clock in the afternoon) the fever left him. John 11:9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. John 19:14 Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and it was about the sixth hour (about twelve o'clock noon). He said to the Jews, See, [here is] your King! Acts 2:15 For these men are not drunk, as you imagine, for it is [only] the third hour (about 9:00 a.m.) of the day; Acts 3:1 NOW PETER and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour (three o'clock in the afternoon), Acts 10:3 About the ninth hour (about 3:00 p.m.) of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God entering and saying to him, Cornelius! Acts 10:9 The next day as they were still on their way and were approaching the town, Peter went up to the roof of the house to pray, about the sixth hour (noon). Acts 10:30 And Cornelius said, This is now the fourth day since about this time I was observing the ninth hour (three o'clock in the afternoon) of prayer in my lodging place; [suddenly] a man stood before me in dazzling apparel, Acts 23:23 Then summoning two of the centurions, he said, Have two hundred footmen ready by the third hour of the night (about 9:00 p.m.) to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen. |

http://www.franciscan-archive.org/patriarcha/opera/canticle.html The Canticle of Brother Son or The Praises of the Creatures: May Thou be praised, my Lord, for our sister, bodily death, whom no man living can escape Woe to those, who die in mortal sin: blessed those whom she will find in Thy most holy desires, because the second death will do them no evil (cf. Apoc 2:11; 20:6) http://www.franciscan-archive.org/patriarcha/opera/letters.html A Letter to the Faithful - An Exhortation to the Brothers and Sisters of Penance However all those men and women, who are not in penance, · and do not receive the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, · and work vices and sins and who walk after wicked concupiscence and the wicked desires of their flesh, · and do not observe, what they have promised the Lord, 35 · and serve the world bodily by carnal desires and anxious concerns (sollicitudo) for the world (saeculum) and by the cares of this life: · (these) held back by the devil, whose sons they are and whose works they do (cf. Jn 8:41), 36 are blind, · because they do not see the True Light, Our Lord Jesus Christ. · They do not have spiritual wisdom, because they do not have the Son of God who is the True Wisdom of the Father, · of whom it is said: "Their wisdom is swallowed up" (Ps 106:27 - Rom. Ps.); and "Cursed are they who turn away from Thy mandates" (Ps 118:21). · They see and acknowledge, they know and work wicked things and they themselves knowingly loose their souls. · See, blind ones, deceived by your enemies: by the flesh, the world, and the devil; that it is sweet to the body to work sin and bitter to work to serve God; · because all vices and sins come forth and "proceed from the heart of man," just as the Lord says in the Gospel (cf. Mk 7:21). · And you shall have nothing in this age nor in the one to come. · And you think you will posses the vanities of this generation (saeculum) for a long time, but you have been deceived, since there shall come the day and hour, of which you do not think, know or pay attention; the body weakens, death approaches and thus one dies a bitter death. · And wherever, whenever, however a man dies in culpable sin, without penance and satisfaction, if he can make satisfaction and does not make satisfaction, the devil tears his soul from his body with such anguish and tribulation, that no one can know it, except him who experiences it. · And all the talents and power and "knowledge and wisdom" (2 Chron 1:12), which they thought they had, is borne away from them (cf. Lk 8:18; Mk 4:25). · And he bequeathed (these) to neighbors and friends and these bore off and divided his substance, 37 and said afterwards: "Cursed be his soul, since he could have given us more and acquired what he did not acquire." · Worms eat the body, and thus perished body and soul in this short age and they shall go into Hell, where they will be tortured without end. |

48 | Lazarus's? | John 12:1 | Michael Draves | 197826
The name Eliezer in the Old Testament may be where the name Lazarus comes from. There are many people with this name. Gen 15:2 Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" Do you count a character in a parable as a person? Luke 16:23 "In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. John 12:1 Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. |

Matt 4:6 and *said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" Matt 4:7 Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" Eccl 9:11 I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all. James 4:13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." James 4:14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. James 4:15 Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." |

Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the direction of the king. |

57 | From what place was Romans written? | Rom 16:23 | Michael Draves | 197064
Corinth seems most likely though Macedonia seems possible. Rom 16:23 Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother. Other mentions of people named Gaius: Acts 19:29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia. Acts 20:4 And he was accompanied by Sopater of Berea, the son of Pyrrhus, and by Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. 1 Cor 1:14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 3 John 1:1 The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. Other Mentions of people named Erastus. Acts 19:22 And having sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. 2 Tim 4:20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but Trophimus I left sick at Miletus. No other mentions of anyone named Quartus. |
