361 | Did Jesus do anything in secret? | John 7:4 | Rowdy | 109065
The only thing I can think of that Jesus kept secret was an occasional instance of His healing. He told several recipients of His miraclous healings to keep this information to themselves. I seem to recall he was concerned about the bad publicity he was getting but I think primarily He was focused on His primary mission, saving the lost. He knew that if the publicity was in full opeartion, the whole world would come to him for healing, and thus take Him away from His main reason for coming: show the way for mankind to get back to His Father.
362 | How to harmonize this passage | 1 Cor 14:34 | Rowdy | 109062
I can only respond with a confirmation of all you have cited. I don't see any problem with it but there again I did grow up in a christian home of like faith so all the women in my life (in the church) have all lived by this guidance. It has not been perfect all the time, especially when I went overseas where we didn't have church leadership, elders throughout that community. But I do think it is fairly clear here throughout God's word. Christ expects His body to be organized and follow the examples and the few simple commands that are in His Word. Remember His Word is what is going to judge us on Judgement Day. I don't see this as being an isolated case of "division or inequality." God's Word has always appeared to be slightly in favor of man over women but that DOES NOT mean men are superior to women. It's just a case of putting the cart behind the horse; that's the order of God's universe. Again, let me emphasize God's pattern works when you follow it. My question to you: Would you suggest that we NOT follow God's will when it's clear throughout His Word, that's what He wants us to do? |

363 | i don't trust my wife, what do i do? | James 5:13 | Rowdy | 109056
13Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. I can only refer you to your elders and promise that I'll pray for you and your wife to grow in trust with each other. I would like to think your elders will be wise enough to counsel/advise you further in this matter. |

364 | Women in the church | 1 Cor 14:34 | Rowdy | 109053
Let's remember the context of this guidance. Here Paul is addressing the christians in Corinth about the way they were abusing their spiritual gifts, especially with each other and during their worship assemblies. During these gatherings, his Divine guidance is correct: women are to maintain silence with the exception of course in their singing. But remember Aquila and Priscilla in their taking Apollos home for correcting. There, Priscilla was able to voice her words to a brother where respect could be maintained. This guidance of women's silence in the public worship setting is consistent with the balance of the Bible, i.e. the leadership of the elders and the asking of questions to their husbands. Now, please don't misunderstand. It's very important to remember I'm not advocating chavunism here, at least not man's. This is God's creation and the order of things in His universe. However, men in general CANNOT abuse and lord this power over women for they have a very important function in the Lord's church. Ladies are welcome to perform almost any function outside the worship assembly. Our ladies teach class and assist with the Deacons in their ministries. Women conduct their own classes, go to retreats and support their husbands with absolutely vital enthusiasm. Without their support, these men would not and could not possibly be near as fruitful or productive for the Lord. There's nothing more powerful than a dynamic couple, married for many years, setting the proper example for other younger couples, giving advice and love and dispensing an occasional bit of stern encouragement. I know this so well because I've been on the receiving end several times and can truthfully say, men AND women such as these have saved our marriage many times over. I look forward to the day when my wife and I can do the same and repay the Lord for his kindness and gentle guidance. The bottom line: God's pattern works when you work His pattern. |

365 | 2Tim 2:15 Study dispensationally? | 2 Timothy | Rowdy | 109052
You bring up a very good point. It is long overdue for more christians to grow to the point where we take God's Word more seriously but remember the context of these words. These words are probably some of the last words communicated between two dear christian brethren, one of whom considered himself to be the spiritual father of the other. Apparently, Timothy at this time was probably a relatively mature christian, especially for that day but he had some tough times to go through. We should all adopt a ministry and not just coast into our heavenly home as that coasting might not get us there. We all need to see ourselves as actively and aggresively pursuing a relationship with God, our Father, in which we draw nearer and nearer so He will do the same. The only way we can do this is to stay in His Words and shine His Truth, through us to the whole world. Then, when we find error, we MUST do all we can to correct that error but just as important, we MUST do that correcting with love, God's kind of love. We must forgive as much as possible, in other words be prone to forgiving instead of not forgiving. We should always assume the best in people until it's proven absolutely otherwise. In regard to your reference to dispensations in this world, I don't see a tremendous need to address that fact. Yes, we need to acknowledge that Christ and His cross of Salvation is the major dividing point between these two dispensations. But I like to think that most all christians readily admit that same truth. God's Word and the Truth therein never change; it's all one big continuous series of love messages to us as His creation. We just need to see His Son's coming to the world as being the ultimate love letter, with a wonderful gift attached. Our job is to accept that gift and the responsibility that comes with it. That is to make a real committment to shine God's light through our lives, our words, our actions, everything we are, everything we hope to be needs to be toward God and for His glory. This life is short, far too short to be wrapped around the axle of life wasting our time on Godless chatter, for we're headed to an eternity with God. What specific topic do you see as being a priority? |

366 | Differences Between Protestant Groups | Acts 2:1 | Rowdy | 109049
Personally, I found Halley's Bible Handbook has a very good and brief historical account. After that I'd refer you to the many books recounting the history of the Restoration movement. In my opinion, a listing of all the many controversies in today's world doesn't do much good. Instead, we as christians ought to stick to studying God's Word and derive in a simple but thorough manner, all of what God has for us. Remember, our Lord's last prayer was for unity, which is different from perfect union as in a military marching parade. A more accurate picture would be that same military unit persuing its mission and goals. Our aim should be to study God's Word so we really can identify the One Body, One Mind, One Lord, One Faith, and One Baptism and all the other ones. I know it sounds simplistic and mayben unrealistic for some but our Lord and King prayed for this and His official representatives, the Apostles provided some wonderful guidance and examples. You must admit, they provided an amazing little amount in the way of restrictions. So it shouldn't be all that difficult to agree on these few and the rest are available as options. The most important thing to remember is who is the Authority in these discussions: One single source, God's Word since that is the only place where we find true guidance from God Himself. |

367 | Why take UNCLEAN animals onto The Ark | Acts 10:11 | Rowdy | 108552
I can't think of any scriptures to support my position but I'll take a chance and respond. The only reason I can think that God would create so many creatures that He knew his Isrealite children couldn't eat is the fact He knew the future. He knew there would be a time in the future that the rest of the world would be able to do so. Personaly, I like to think that the tremendous variety of life on this planet shows once again that only a God like ours could have done it with design and forethought in stark contrast to the happenstance of evolution. Just look at the wonderful things about our own body we take for granted. Compare that to the omidirection eye of that one lizard, whose species name I can't recall and the amazing sticky feet of the geecko. Scientists still don't quite understand all the wonderful aspects of that creature and can't adequately explain how his feet evolved that way. There's so many wonderful things about our Lord's creation. I must admit, I look forward to finding out all about these mysteries and more in heaven. How about you? 368 | Is Holy Communion for baptised believers | 1 Cor 11:27 | Rowdy | 108539
I've always been taught the Communion is a very personal thing although we do observe it in a family setting at worship services. I believe it's left up to each individual to do his own soul searching as 1 Cor 11 suggests. Now if it's obvious that a person is abusing the Lord's Supper as was being done in Corinth, then someone with maturity and love should approach that person or persons and correct them in accordance with God's word. But if you're asking, Should it be left up to someone else to determine who should or should not partake merely because there's a question in their mind as to your membership, we don't practice that way. Never have in my whole life and I've been a christian for 36 years. But I'm sure you're going to get other kinds of responses. |

369 | Man is considered to be what to God? | Gen 1:26 | Rowdy | 108536
I don't think it's clearly stated in specific terms in the Bible, but in my opinion, we (all of mankind) are the creation and God is the creator. Just like when a young lad puts a model plane together and paints it up real fine like I used to try to do many years ago, that person wants his creation to be a reflection of the creator. He might even put his best work, his masterpiece on the shelf or hang from his bedroom ceiling. I like to think that we're all masterpieces for God and he's anxiously waiting for the day when we decide to accept his leadership and finally come to His home in heaven. Now in supplement to all that, we are weak and sinful. We are physical whereas God is Spirit. Our minds are finite and His is infinite. His thoughts and actions are far more advanced compared to us than even the contrast between us and the insects of the world. We don't have a clue what real Godliness or love is all about but I'm looking forward to finding out. How about you? What is your opinion? |

370 | SPOUSE OR CHILD? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 108445
I sure hope not. However, we are supposed to cling to our spose in preference to all other beings, including our parents and kids IF it comes down to that kind of horrible situation. Hopefully, we get ourselves married to a spouse who loves us enough to make life pleasant to all involved enabling us to enjoy our whole family. I can only pray that you enjoy this kind of relationship with your current spouse. Remember, God also wants us to be peacemakers in the world. God bless you in your endeavors.
371 | What is love in regards to the bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 108444
There's at least three kinds of love identified in the NT by the Greek writers: 1) Eros from which we get our word erotic. You can figure out this kind of love is just pure lust basically but it's beautiful when it's between a married man and his wife. 2) Philo is the Greek word for brotherly love as in family members, from which we formed the city name, Philadelphia. 3) Agape is the ultimate kind of Godly love that Jesus would have us aspire to; that which Gods loves, with no expectation or requirement of anything in return. It's the kind of love described in 1 Cor 13. I think there's a fourth type but I can't remember the details of that word. Sure beats the English language. You and I will tell the most precious being on this planet to us personnaly that we love that person and then turn around and we say we love pizza or ice cream. What a crazy world in which we live. Just another sidebar: Just before Jesus left this world, he asked his beloved disciple Peter, Do you love me, 3 times, using the Agape word the first two times. Peter's answer used Philo. Finally, on the thrid time, the Lord settled for Peter's answer. But both He and His Father would like to see us all graduate from this world or school of hard knocks and practice His kind of love. I'd like to think after getting help from the Holy Spirit, Peter did learn that lesson and did finally graduate along with all the other Apostles. God bless. |

372 | where is it that luke wrote acts | Acts | Rowdy | 108442
It's not stated exactly but most scholars link the first verse in Acts to the first few verses of the Gospel of Luke. That and the fact there is so much documentation about the Apostle Paul in Acts seems to make Luke's authorship unquestionable. But remember, Luke was not an apostle. Another interesting note you may be interested in pursuing is that the tense of Acts. In some cases throughout Acts, Luke speaks in 1st person as though he is traveling with Paul. Then in other places, he speaks of Paul in 3rd person as if Luke stayed behind at one point but caught up with Paul later on. Just another indication that these writings really were recorded by men with God speaking through them. Check it out. |

373 | can you be baptised twice | Acts | Rowdy | 108438
There's nothing wrong with being baptised as you describe above. But if you want to get it all straight in your mind and others who might read this, there can only be one baptism per person. In this case with you, the first time you had doubts, therefore you just got wet. Thanks be to God, He always wants us to enter the church with full confidence and faith in Him and His Son. So go ahead and get yourself baptized as quickly as possible just like the Phillipian jailer. There's no shame in admitting this kind of thing. That's one reason there should be no big rush to get our kids baptized. It's really something they should study and figure out for themselves, or maybe with a little subtle questioning and answering from their parents. I was baptized at 12 years of age and have had my fair share of a sinful life thereafter. Each individual's baptism is a very personal thing between that person and their God. God bless you in being humble and submissive enough to think about this and your desire to make your salvation certain. |

374 | Does speaking in tongues come naturally? | Acts | Rowdy | 108418
I have a hard time believing in any of the modern practice of miracles such as speaking in tongues and supernatural healing from another human being. However, I'm certainly NOT saying I don't believe in miracles such as the miracle of child birth or the remission of cancer or some other form of disease. I believe those kinds of miracles are relayed directly from God, our Father directly to the recipient, sometimes with the encouragement of prayer from us, His children and sometimes without. This whole topic has to be studied thoroughly by each individual but if we hold to the standards set by the NT, then miracles are the replacement of body parts, or raising of the dead after a few days of confirmed death, enabling the lame to walk immediately after a lifetime of NOT walking, etc. Healing of backpains and headaches or the mumblings of incoherent syllables which doesn't communicate any known language are examples of someone being deceived. But again, these conclusions have to be drawn after much individual study. But this one thing about speaking tongues is fairly easily arrived at: 1 Cor 14 teaches us if the speaking of tongues is not specifically communicating a message to be understood by the audience, then that person should remain silent. Another factor that can be easily proven through the study of history on this topic is the concept of a "speaking in tongues" as depicted in the NT. This simply meant someone was suddenly enabled to speak in a language known throughout a nation or a large group of people. He or she was enabled in this manner without any special efforts on their part in learning this language. This gift and all the other miraclous powers bestowed upon the select few by the laying of hands was manifested for the spreading of the gospel since they didn't have God's word to confirm their message of salvation. After the Apostles and the ones receiving these miraclous gifts died, the Gospel didn't need kind of sign because of the advent of the Bible and the fact everyone knew of this history. This was also predicted by Paul in 1 Cor 13. |

375 | Acts 9:7 and Acts 22:9 contradict each o | Acts | Rowdy | 108416
Acts 9:7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Acts 22:9 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,' he replied. My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me. There's a slight contrast but I don't think it's a contradiction. In the first verse, the companions don't see any persons. In the second, they see a light but no persons. Again, in the first verse, they heard the sound whereas in the second, they didn't understand what was being spoken. Maybe you can elaborate and state exactly what do you see as being a contradiction. Please do so. It helps if you've taken a school course in logic wherein they hold discussions depicting this very same kind of contrast in premises and conclusions. Sometimes conclusions are derived from faulty premise and thus cause the conclusion to be faulty as in this case. One condition or description does NOT exclude the other. Please look again. |

376 | list books in old testament paul wrote | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 108412

377 | How can Satan cast himself out? | Matt 12:26 | Rowdy | 108402
Here, Jesus is referring to one of Satan's demons and is saying "How can he cast out one of his own?" Be sure to read all scripture in its context and it'll help you understand it better. Also think about who wrote it, when for the historical context and to whom was it written. Just as God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost are in perfect sync with their whole; the Devil is in sync with his demons (fallen angels). If only we as human beings could be as united in our faith and trust in God, this world would be a far better place to live and bring up our kids. |

378 | Explain in details Jeremiah 10:2-4 | Jer 10:2 | Rowdy | 108401
I just read it so my first response is that God is just warning us as His children not to be senstitive to every new thing that develops in the public world. Fashions come and go as do rumors of war and peace. We as God's children need to put our faith and trust in God as He truly is in charge of the whole creation and knows all our wants and needs. Some folks may take this passage to imply that they can find and read the right signs in the sky or anyplace else and predict the pending doom of the world and judgement day, etc. I differ with that kind of thinking and point to the words of Jesus. He said the end of the world would come "like a thief in the night." I don't think anyone will be expecting it when the actual end happens, just like in the days of Noah. As we are shown in the Book of Job, if the worse comes and we lose everything, including our very lives, we should still rely on God to bring us home. The tragedies of this world are mainly caused by the sin in the world but we can minimize their happening to us by living Godly lives. But the bottom line message from Job is that God wants us to get over our addiction for the physical world and instead get hooked on the idea of spending eternity with Him in heaven. I agree, this takes work, a lifetime of hard work to truly believe and have faith of this depth. Hope to see you there. God bless. |

379 | Elder, singular or plural? | Acts 14:23 | Rowdy | 108260
If we go back to the original pattern in the New Testament, congregations of the church in the first century followed the instructions of the Apostles and appointed at least two or more elders. But of course, they had the Holy Spirit to assist them as they didn't have mature, seasoned men with a solid history of christianity from which to choose. But it seems clear from the few examples we're given that the elders ruled their congregations with much wisdom and humbleness. Sometime in the centuries that followed, it become fasionable to appoint "chief" elders and then the supreme elder per city were sent to a central city like Rome. Eventually this practice was enshrined and thus led to the establishment of the Pope. As always, if we stick to God's pattern, most of those headaches and heartaches can be avoided. Personally, I think this was the danger Paul was warning the elders in Ephesus, as this kind of thing was to come from one of that very group. As most people know, this controversy led to the Reformation and finally the Restoration. I think it's a good practice to see each generation of christians start and maintain their own Restoration. Each of us have to make up our own minds as to which pattern we're going to follow: God's or that man's. We all grow up with more than our fair share of traditions, some of them good and some of them not so good. It behooves us all to get into God's Perfect Maintenance Manual and retweak ourselves and do the proper amount of retweaking of our congregations. Now, sometimes that means a lot of study and a whole lot of humble submission, especially those of us with more than our share of stubborness. I speak from experience. Traditions are OK as long as they're re-evaluated and recognized for what they are. They must NEVER take the place of or take the place alongside God's Word. Otherwise, we're following the same path that led to appointment of the Pope, equal to the Bible in authority. In my opinion the Bible is very clear, congregations should have at least two or three elders, with several deacons under them, then the preacher. That's the pattern of government that I see in the Bible and it's the pattern that has worked for 2,000 years. It's also simple and easy to understand. |

380 | NIV bible | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 108246
I've found a much better approach is to develop a library containing several versions of the Bible. The NIV is pretty good but in my opinion, almost all the versions have one or two minor discrepencies including the original King James. I've found the NKJ to be a good version. Just remember, they're all translated by man and thus we have human error. But usually the defects are minor and don't mess up God's plan of salvation. They usually involve other controversial topics like the Mary, mother of Jesus and her virginity. Anyway, with this library of several versions, it's good to compare the versions on a particular passage or topic. If you're really serious about studying God's word, get a large concordance like Strong's and a Greek lexicon. Then you can go back to original Greek meaning. God bless in your study and perseverance.
