341 | Same question | John 1:1 | Val | 211793
Robert, please mark your followup questions as a note rather than a new question. A thorough observation of the book of Hebrews is warranted by your question. You will only be satisfied when you have studied the book for yourself and discover the answers to your questions as you slow down and use a bible dictionary and cross references to understand the verse in question. It is only after thorough observation can an interpretation be made. You are asking for the interpretation first without doing the leg work yourself. I notice you have been on this topic for some time now. Its time to get down to some serious personal bible study. Welcome to the forum and I hope you take this exhortation in a way that points you to know Christ and His word better. Blessings, Val

343 | What does Hebrews 9:16 mean? | John 1:1 | Val | 211789
The word testament is the same as "will". For instance, your father may have a will and in it leave you his house. You would not receive the house until your father died. Similarly the New Covenant did not go into effect until Christ's death. Blessings Val

Yes I have heard that saying but is it biblical. I don't know. I trust you will read the thread, we have already went over this topic. Unless you want to add something else. I don't really know what you are talking about. The text you are using might be a good place to start if you can reference it. Thanks Val
345 | Thank you for your answer. | Gal 3:2 | Val | 211529
The Sabbath is not something that is talked about in the churches I have attended. Perhaps someone else could help you with that. Doc is Jewish. He might give you some insight. I think if you come to Jesus by seeking Him and believing what He did for us you will see the gospel. Read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The way we approach God is different now as the book of Hebrews will tell you. Love God and keep His commandments. Continue your prayer and bible readings and good deeds would be my advice to anyone. I am not sure I answered your question as you would like. Maybe some of the other forum members can aid you. Blessings, Val

I think what you might want to study a topic called syncretism. Syncretism is what some of the people in Paul's time wanted to do. They wanted to harmonize Judaism and Christianity. Thus you see Paul's teaching in Galatians. It is a hard topic and I have difficulty with it myself. It takes studing the different books of the bible. I learn something more about the law which was associated with works and grace which is in Christ alone. Now the law is not the problem. The problem was and has always been sin. The law is good. Obeying the law is good. People in the NT were trying to combine the law and grace, Judaism and Christianity. Does that make sense? Read the book of Hebrews and the book of Leviticus. Hebrews explains how Christ fulfilled the requirements of the law. Blessings, Val

Hello Azure, thank you for your gracious welcome. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving? Is it Thanksgiving in the place you live? You are exactly right. We can never move forward without the direct guidance of our Lord through prayer and His word. We can think of what we would do in situations but we must ask Him first what we are to do. I think of David when he remembered to ask the Lord what to do, he was told specifically how to interact with others. It was when he ventured out on his own that he got in a pickle but the Lord was still gracious to him and helped get him out of his trouble. Depending on the type relationship one has with a couple it would almost be impossible to point an across the board response. Each relationship and response should be brought earnestly to the Lord in prayer and act as He directs in agreement with a daily study of the scriptures. I find He talks to me through the word and supplies an answer to my daily problems and questions day by day. Frankly I wouldn't know what to tell anyone what to do but to seek the Lord's guidance in the way you have so plainly suggested. Thank you for your thoughts dear one and for John and Cheri. All of you have good insights. I learn so much from you and am thankful for you on this Thanksgiving Day. Blessings, Val

Hey John, you know we could try it your way. If they didn't repent, they probably wouldn't be offering a second invitation. I agree with you there is not a reason to not give your idea a try. Most people though have trouble talking about Jesus to christians much less the openly rebelious, i.e., living in sin. Birds of a feather flock together. I was just saying if we go along with people in their sin and act as though there is nothing wrong with it we are somehow aiding and abedding the enemy. If you bring up the subject of what Christ has said about it then I think that would be perfectly fine, you have fulfilled your obligation to state the truth in love and gentleness of course. Of course, most people living like that have a reason to be living like that and only Christ could change them. I guess there would be no reason to change if everyone went along with their program. I think sin is very serious and open rebellion is very serious so how would you deal with it after you have shared the gospel. Their options are 1) get married or one move out 2) ignore you and carry on with same. So what would you do in option one? Rejoice? What about option two? Are you going back over there for dinner and drop the subject or continue to urge them to get right with God or shake the dust off your feet? Yes I am still eating cake. It is too much fun!! |

Hi John, adding to the discussion let me say I didn't mean to come across as advocating avoiding anyone. The question to me is how do we deal with sin. Usually people who live together are avoiding an uncomfortable conversation or are in denial. If you truly love someone you will confront them with the good news of the gospel. For instance the woman at the well. Christ offered her eternal life. He told her she was living with a man who was not her husband. Maybe we should all go back and learn from the way He interacted with her. I did have a good thanksgiving, good food and family. Thanks for asking, Hope you had a good one too! Val

Hi justme, of course avoiding people would take on a whole new dimension. You wouldn't even consider sitting down at their house for a meal. As far as I can remember the Lord was always in teaching mode. So as our example we should be in teaching mode too not avoiding sinners, but telling them the reason for the hope that is in us. The problem with all is sin. My point was we should reach them with the gospel. To fail to point out what pleases the Lord and displeases Him would be avoiding the truth. To sit down with a couple in their home, playing house, acting as if every thing is hunky dorey is not the type of thing I saw the Lord do. He was always in teaching mode. After all He was and is the greatest teacher of all. Today in our world, sin is acceptable. My question to you is sin acceptable to the Lord? Interesting conversation. Val

Pray about it first. If you participate in the dinner this wil give a physical appearance of approval. If you tell them how much you love them and how much you want to participate but are afraid it will affect your christian witness then they should understand. Be prepared with scripture and do a thorough study on the topic. Try not to shut down communication as you may be the only gospel they read. Blessings, Val

356 | Reading the Bible with more Questions | 2 Tim 1:1 | Val | 211230
Dear Pete, one thing that I have learned is that the more I study the bible the more I don't know. However, in saying that let me say the questions you ask are very good questions therefore get in an in-depth bible study such as those offered at Precept.org. I have used these for over 20 years and have grown and am still growing in the faith. The funny thing about bible study is that it is not the means to an end. We will never know everything here on this earth but as we learn and grow we will still have questions on different topics. As you can see many people here who have been studying the bible still have questions. When you do a quick read through which is good don't get me wrong, you don't grasp the deep golden nuggets of truth that you will get when you slow down and do an in-depth dig it out for yourself study. Precept shows you how to study the bible. It has you look up the meaning of words in the Greek or Hebrew. It has you go to cross references which tie it all together. So be patient and enjoy the journey. It is a wonderful journey and I commend you for even wanting to study God's word. So many do not have time or the desire to study so congratulations on your endeavors. Browse the Precept Upon Precept Book studies they have to offer and you will see different books and topics that cover your concerns. That would be a good book to start in. Enjoy. Hope this helps, Val

I do not have Matthew in the Holman Edition. I do have Matthew by H.A. Ironside. Regarding these verses Matthew 5:17-30 Ironside says: In verses 17 to 30 we see how our Lord applied the precepts of the law, neither ignoring them nor belittling them, but showing that there is a deeper meaning in it all than is seen on the surface. It is that which, rightly applied, makes manifest man’s utter helplessness and inability to keep its holy precepts in his nature state. Let us notice with care what Jesus taught as to this (Ironside has you read verses 17-30 and then continues his commentary) “I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” This our Lord did in three ways: by His perfect obedience He magnified the law and made it honorable (Isa.42:21); by His death He met all its claim against the lawbreakers, and so He becomes the end of the law for righteousness to all who believe (Rom. 10:4); by His Spirit He enables believers to fulfil the righteous requirements of the law (Rom. 8:4) “One jot or one tittle.” The jot is the yodh, the smallest letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The title is a little mark indicating a slight change in the meaning of a letter. Our Lord’s words indicate the perfection of Holy Scripture. “Whosoever…shall break one of these least commandments.” That is, anyone who ignores the divine authority of God’s revealed will by loosening the moral effect of His commands, so as to make men careless of their obligations to Him, shall be esteemed as of no worth in His kingdom. “Except your righteousness shall exceed.” The scribes and Pharisees were extreme legalists and trusted in their own righteousness, but had not submitted to the righteousness of God (Rom. 10:3) The righteousness God accepts is of a higher character. This higher righteousness is suggested in the verses that follow. The law forbade murder. Jesus shows that unreasonable anger is, in itself, a violation of the spirit of the commandment. “Thou shalt not kill.” It is as a result of such a condition of mind that murder is committed. To use vile invectives against another is the manifestation of the hatred which causes men to kill, and therefore places one in danger even of hell-fire. To profess to be a worshiper of God while willfully wronging another or cherishing malice in the heart is obnoxious to God. Let him who comes to His altar with a gift first seek out the brother he has wronged and then draw near to sacrifice. Nor should one permit a spirit of antagonism toward another to continue if it is within his power to come to agreement; for sin never dies of old age, but becomes worse as time goes on. Many a one has suffered severely because of what might easily have been cleared up if he had given heed to these words. Hope this helps, Val |

1. Read Hebrews 10:26-31. Read it through and then examine it in light of the “5 W’s and an H.” Write out your insights. 2. Read the book of Hebrews and note the warnings in Hebrews. 3. How does this warning in Hebrews 10:26-31 compare with the previous warnings in Hebrews. 4. Do you see any parallels between this warning (Hebrews 10:26-31) and the one in Hebrews 2:1-4? If so, what are they? 5. Can you see any parallels between the way the author of Hebrews deals with the recipients of his letter in Hebrews 6:1-12 and Hebrews 10:26-39? If so, what are they? 6. In Hebrews 10:26-29 the author tells what happens when a person goes on sinning willfully. A) Read Numbers 15:22-31. In this Old Testament passage you see the difference between unintentional sin and defiant sin. What do you learn from this passage, and how does it compare with Hebrews 10:26-29? B) “Go on sinning” is a present active participle. What insight does this give you? C. In your own words, explain what is happening in Hebrews 10:29. 7. Once again, in Hebrews 10:30-31, the author reminds his readers of the character of God; he again quotes the Old Testament. A) Read Deuteronomy 32:35-36 and note how the author quotes from the song of Moses. B) Read Psalm 145:20 and write it out. C) Note the reference to “the living God” in Hebrews 3:12. Why this designation for God? What does the author want his readers to see, to recognize, to realize? 8. Lastly see what your commentaries have to say on Hebrews 10:26:31. This is what mine said; 10:26 The law promised forgiveness for sins of ignorance, but willful sins had no remedy. As believers we have assurance that “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins (1 John 1:9A). Willful sins can receive divine forgiveness, but people involved in these sins often fail to seek God’s forgiveness by repentance. Sin being talked about is a deliberate rejection of the truth of the gospel. If the readers left Christ for Judaism, they would show that they had never responded in faith to Christ. 10:28-29 These words show an attitude toward Jesus as antagonism , despising Christ’s work, arrogant rejection of the truth which the Holy Spirit tried to communicate about Jesus. These words were for professing Christians. Any who turned from Christ could expect divine judgment and eternal rejection. 10:30-31 Judgment would be a frightening experience. The anticipation of judgment by the living God should fill sinners with dread (Heb 12:29) 9. This study that I am in right now is Precepts Upon Precepts Part 2. These questions are taken from that study. The commentary in number 8 is taken from Holman New Testament Commentary Hebrews and James General Editor Max Anders, Author Thomas D. Lea. 10. If you will research this in the order given you will be amazed what the Holy Spirit will teach you. Of course the first step is to pray. Hope this helps. Blessings, Val |

359 | ... | Eph 2:15 | Val | 211206
I believe you will find part of your answers in the book of Hebrews. The law is defined in the book of Hebrews as a system of worship, a way to approach God. It contrasts the earthly tabernacle and the heavenly tabernacle. It shows how Jesus brought in by His sacrifice, a perfect sacrifice, only offered one time by his death and resurrection. It abolished the animal sacrifices. The animal sacrifices and the furniture represents Jesus. For instance; the showbread/Jesus is the bread of life, the lampstand or menorah/Jesus is the light of the world. It is a beautiful picture of the better covenant aka the New Covenant. When a person believes, has faith in what Jesus has done at the cross and His finished work that person is sealed with the Holy Spirit who helps him have power over sin and walk in obedience to Christ. We still gain insight from the first five books of the bible as to what pleases God, i.e., His moral expectations. We have direction as to what is immorality and how to treat one another, i.e., don't steal, kill, covet, etc. Breaking the law in one point breaks the whole law and brings the curse of death. Christ broke that curse with His one sacrifice so that we are no longer under a curse of death. People who do not believe, have faith in Jesus are still under the curse of the law which is death. Hope this helps. Val
360 | Leviticus16:8,10,20-22 | Leviticus | Val | 211014
Dear a1busdriver, In my studies I came across this topic. I would like to share it with you. The emphasizes is on the work of Christ. Specifically how He deals with the sins of those who are sanctified. Not only does He purify us and make us clean He remembers our sins no more. Tradition tells us that lots were cast between the two goats. One was sacrificed and the other was taken into the wilderness. As best I can explain it it is symbolism of Christ and how He dealt with sin when He offered Himself the one sacrifice for all. (Hebrews) Not only did He purify us of our sins but He remembers our sins no more. So the second goat was taken by a man so far and then another man and then another far, far into the wilderness until he reached a cliff upon which he would push the goat off the cliff. The symbolism of this is that Christ remembers our sins no more and as Corrie Ten Boon says He put up a no fishing sign. Further explaination: Man's responsibility is faith in Christ. This is the point we are saved once and forever. We commit daily sins and therefore need daily forgiveness. (I John) These sins are unintentional sins not defiant sins. Hope this helps. Blessings Val |
