Hello MJH, your comments are interesting. I am not sure I understand them since I have not read the Yevamot and Sanhedrin. What are these references and where can I find them? Are these the oral traditions, the 600 or so commandments added by the religious leaders? Thanking you in advance. It seems that when anyone, such as the religious leaders in that day, strays from the clear teaching of scripture and adds to it the commandments of men, it leads one astray. Don't we see this in the way that Jesus questioned Nicodemus? Happy New Year - Val

Dear Cheri, thank you for your warm greeting. I hope you are doing good. Christmas was good. Remembering our Lord's birth is a blessing in deed. This is a special time of year all the way to Easter when we take a special time to celebrate our Lord's resurrection. I guess you will have to ask him. I don't know. May you have a wonderful New Year. - Val

Oh contrare, Heb 11:16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them. When he says their faith was approved. It is saying they had a genuine faith and it passed the test. All faith is tested. Their faith is in God. We are all saved the same way through faith in God, believing what he says is true. Again, could you please fill out your profile. Are these things you are saying your own or are they someone else's? If they are someone else's could you provide the name of that speaker and their denomination? Thank you, Val |

Pray for your atheist friend that God would change his heart and reveal the gospel to him. Let God work in his heart. Meanwhile study the scriptures for yourself and let your life be an example to your friend as you obey God and love Him. - Val
291 | salvation for unbelievers? | Rom 1:20 | Val | 212450
The bible is clear that God has put within every person an inate understanding of who He is. If the person acts on this understanding God will reach him with the gospel. It is the person's failure to act on the light he has been given that is the problem. We look at the character of God that he is holy, pure, just, righteous, can do no evil that we see that it is our misunderstanding of these mysteries rather than that somehow God is wrong or unfair. The gospel has reached China. They have been exposed to the gospel. I believe the whole known world was reached with the gospel by the Apostle Paul. John 3:16 and 17 says we were condemned already. Christ came to rescue us. You can help with the spreading of the gospel in China by supporting missionaries in that region. Blessing - Val

Correction, sometimes a believer will sin deliberately, willfully, as in David's case, however when confronted David repented. Val
293 | Iam having some questions | John 17:1 | Val | 212447
Kcab, there is a contrast in I John of willful sin and unwillful sin. A believer will not as a practice of life, lifestyle, be in rebellion against God's commands to be holy. A believer will sin unwillfully and when he does we see the provision is made in I John; we confess that sin and are forgiven through Christ Jesus. What preacher or speaker have you listened to that advocates your position? Val |

294 | Iam having some questions | John 17:1 | Val | 212446
The Deuteronomy passage is about the Mosiac covenant. It is about blessing and cursing. They would be blessed if they kept the law. They would be cursed if they did not keep it. The rest of the story shows they did not keep the law and foreign powers took their land and them as slaves. The Lord has always had a believing remnant. The Lord tells his believing remnant how to live in the land where they are taken and the Lord blesses them there. I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles. Kcab I see that you believe that you are perfect - keeping the law. I hate to bust your bubble but you are not. You still sin - unwillfully. Val |

295 | Iam having some questions | John 17:1 | Val | 212445
Kcabm14, the believers of the old testament believed God and it was counted to them as righteousness. (our word saved) Those of old looked forward to the cross. In these days we look back 2000 years to the cross. Both are saved by believing God and trusting that what He says is true. Our actions show our belief - Hebrews 11. The Holy Spirit was upon those in the old testament however it could also leave them. In the new testament the Holy Spirit dwells in believers permanently - Acts. John is right in his posts. The text about sinning in I John shows that people have a changed lifestyle they will not sin as a lifestyle, a practice of life. Since we are not in our glorified bodies which we will receive when we get to heaven, we still sin, unwillfully. When we confess our sins our Advocate Jesus Christ, forgives us our sin and cleanses us. This is our daily bath. What denomination or movement are you a part of? The gospel is first preached in Genesis to Adam and Eve when God told them a seed (Christ) would come. We are all, old testament and new testament people saved the same way. Believe and trust in God. Blessings, Val

298 | Why do I want to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 13:1 | Val | 212384
Dear Flyman, I see from your profile you are recently divorced. I know that must have caused you much pain and distress. Divorce is considered a major crisis in a persons life. Sometimes as people who can take only so much pain we build walls around ourselves and shut others out as a protective measure. You are right only God can see the heart. If you will let down the walls you have built you will find there are some caring, loving christians here who love God's word and their fellow christians. Many have tried to reason with you and it seems you will not humble yourself and submit to them. Some of the things you propose are uncalled for. You have been warned by several posters. If you continue on this road you are in danger of losing your privilege to post here. I am telling you this because I sense behind your arguments there is a hurting person there. Please drop this issue for now. You have stated your position so its time to move on. Merry Christmas - Val
299 | Why do I want to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 13:1 | Val | 212375
I suppose one of the most controversial movements in the church today is that called the charismatic movement. I do not like to use the word use the word "charismatic" for a movement that stresses just one or two gifts of the Spirit, for all the gifts of the Spirit are charismatic. In First Corinthians 12 the apostle clearly says that every Christian has one or more charismatic gifts. I would prefer to call this group we are observing in the church now the Pentecostal movement, or, perhaps even more accurately, the glossolalia movement. The term glossolalia comes from the Greek glossa, the tongue, and lalia, to speak and is the more accurate term for this group because it stresses speaking in tongues. This movement relies heavily upon the closing verses of Mark's gospel for biblical support of its views. These verses refer to the signs that accompany those who believe: casting out demons, speaking in new tongues, healing the sick, picking up serpents, drinking poison, etc…. The key to this passage is the word "believe." That emphasis is in line with the thrust of Mark's gospel because this gospel does not present Christianity as just a nice story... It stresses the fact that the death and resurrection of Christ is something to be believed, and it is intended to change lives. As we act on our belief, it changes us. The emphasis here is on the belief of these apostles whom Jesus was to send out into all the world with this great story…. Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene... She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. Mark 16:9-11 RSV Immediately, the writer underscores the fact that these disciples, when they heard of Mary's experience with Jesus, did not believe it … Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. Mark 16:14 RSV It is evident that Mark wants us to understand what a climate of persistent and stubborn unbelief prevailed among these disciples after the resurrection... Knowing the pressure that would be brought against these apostles to get them to deny this supernatural event, our Lord now goes on to give them certain signs which will accompany and encourage them in preaching the gospel. This climate of unbelief is the setting in which Jesus promises these signs in Verse 17, "And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; If they pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark 16:17-18 RSV It is easy to read this as though Jesus means these signs will accompany everyone who believes and preaches the gospel. Unfortunately, the text makes it appear this way, and this is how this passage has been understood by many. As you go about preaching the gospel, these signs will immediately confirm that the faith of those who believe is genuine. But the amazing fact is that for twenty centuries millions of people have been converted and have believed the gospel, and none of these signs have appeared. There have been claims that these signs have been manifested in certain instances, but if this is what these words meant, then these signs would be everywhere. Every time a person became a Christian, some of these signs would be manifested. Therefore, they ought to be the most frequent occurrence in all Christendom. But the truth is, they are very rarely, if ever, seen. Now what does this mean? Well, it means, of course, that we have misunderstood this passage if we read it that way. It does not square with what God actually does…. Now the Apostle Paul did all these things. He cast our demons, spoke in new tongues, was accidentally bitten by a poisonous snake...unharmed...He had power to lay hands on the sick, and they were healed; and he did it again and again. This is what he means when he writes in Second Corinthians 12:12: "The signs of a true apostle were performed among you in all patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works." These, then, are the signs of an apostle. They were authenticating signs to accompany those who first went out with the gospel into an unbelieving and hostile world. We have this confirmed, I think, by the final paragraph. So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them [the disciples] and confirmed the message by the signs that attended THOSE SIGNS FOLLOWING by Ray C. Stedman can be read in its entirety at Precept.org by entering the reference Mark 16. Merry Christmas, Val |

Dear Crystal, "willfully sinning" means one has no intention of stopping. You have been given some good scriptures and comments. Find yourself a christian mentor, preferably a woman family member or friend. Find a good bible believing church and participate with like minded believers who can help you grow and support you in being accountantable to Christ. Spend much time in prayer and bible study. Tell everyone you are not the person you used to be but have a new life in Christ. They may test you so turning them down will show them you mean business and it will be a testimony to your new life in Christ. Merry Christmas - Val
