Searcher: John 20:22: Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible ". In this case the act of breathing was used to represent the nature of the influence that would come upon them, and the source of that influence" John Gills Expo on the Bible: "but this breathing on them, and the words that attended it, were a symbol, pledge, and confirmation, of what they were to receive on the day of Pentecost". 4:8: Peter had been present in the upper room and received the Holy Spirit there on the day of Pentecost. 4:31 - Gills: and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost; with the gifts of the Holy Ghost, even with extraordinary ones, such as speaking with divers tongues, as before on the day of Pentecost; see Act_2:4 and this was the case not only of the apostles, but of the other ministers of the word, and it may be of the whole church: John Wesley's explanatory notes: Act 4:31 - They were all filled - Afresh; and spake the word with boldness - So their petition was granted. 9:17 - Paul received the Holy Spirit when Ananias laid hands on him. 13:9 - Principle of first context - look at the scriptures before and after. This just states that he was filled not that he had just gotten filled. 13:52 - ? The Holy Spirit was still with them. your question? Eph 5:18 - True communion with God is not induced by drunkeness, but by the Holy Spirit. Paul is teaching that we should always be under the influence of the Holy Spirit by letting the Word control our lives rather than alochol. CONTINUALLY, adv. 1. Without pause or cessation; unceasingly; as, the ocean is continually rolling its waves on the shore. (Webster's Dictionary) The verses you are referring to in Luke were still OT. Receiving the Holy Ghost under the Old Covenant differs from receiving the Holy Ghost under the New Covenant. Acts 2:4 - refer to previous answer prayon |

322 | prayon Did some not rec the Holy Spirit | 1 Cor 12:11 | prayon | 111822
Searcher, Act 2:2-4: "Suddenly, a sound like a violently blowing wind came from the sky and filled the whole house where they were staying. Tongues that looked like fire appeared to them. The tongues arranged themselves so that one came to rest on each believer"(not apostle). "And they were all filled of the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Here is a visible sign of the gift they were to receive. They saw cloven tongues, like as of fire (Acts 2:3), and it sat - ekathise, not they sat, those cloven tongues, but he, that is the Spirit (signified thereby), rested upon each of them, as he is said to rest upon the prophets of old (MHCC) If tongues was not the initial sign I am curious what was? What do you think Simon saw that convinced him that the Holy Spirit was given? Acts 9: NO it does not say that he spoke immediately in tongues, however, the majority of the places in the bible state that "the Holy Spirit came to them, and they began to talk in other languages" (Act 19:6) " Act 10:45-47 All the believers who were circumcised and who had come with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured on people who were not Jewish. They heard these non-Jewish people speaking in other languages and praising God. Then Peter said, "No one can refuse to baptize these people with water. They have received the Holy Spirit in the same way that we did." Act 19:6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came to them, and they began to talk in other languages and to speak what God had revealed. In all these instances (Acts 2,10, 19) all state that they were baptized with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues. Therefore it is probable that Paul spoke in tongues when he was baptized with the Holy Spirit or it would be a violation of the Principle of Context in bible interpretation (Knowing Scriptue by R. E. Sproul). Upon baptism the Holy Spirit enters you but you receive a measure of the Holy Spirit in the new birth but you receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Acts 8 shows us that the 2 baptisms do not happen at the same time in most cases. They are 2 seperate entities. prayon |

325 | Should we ask God for the gift of tongue | 1 Cor 12:11 | prayon | 111765
Searcher, I would like to add a couple more of Kenneth Hagin's books. We use a lot of his books in the bible college I go to. Bible Prayer Study Course is very good. If you don't have a lot of time there is a short book callled "Baptism in the Holy Spirit; Living in the Fulfillment of the Promise". This book includes the 10 reasons every believer should speak in tongues. prayon |

326 | Should we ask God for the gift of tongue | 1 Cor 12:11 | prayon | 111764
Hi Searcher, If Mark 16:17-18 were meant only for the 11 it would of stated so. When he was refering to the apostles he always stated "the apostles" or "the twelve". Here it says believers therefore it means all believers. If believers meant apostles it would have to mean apostles in every instance it is mentioned. If it had different meanings in 2 different passages it would violate the principles of bible interpretation. Therefore Acts 4:4 "But many of those who had heard the message became believers, so the number of men who believed grew to about 5,000", would mean that those 5000 became apostles because they all spoke with tongues. This isn't possible because it would violate 1Co 12:29 "Not all believers are apostles, are they?..." Act 2:4 "All the believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak." This verse is referring to those in the upper room, the 3ooo were from the crowd who heard them speaking. To address your statement of the 120 speaking in known languages - These are languages that the Spirit gave them the ability to speak. If the person already knew the language why did the Holy Spirit have to give them the ability to speak them? The languages they were speaking were unknown to them but others from the crowd recognized them as their own dialects (see vs 7-12.) If they were speaking their own known languages why were they amazed and perplexed? As for the 3000, they were baptized in water as John the baptist had baptized. It does not say anywhere in the passage that they were baptixed with the Holy Spirit as it does in the 5 passages I mentioned. 2:27? Not sure if you got the right scripture here... 4:4 - Here again there is no mention of a baptism of the Holy Ghost. 8:14-17: read on to verses 18-19. Here Simon saw evidence of the Holy Ghost after Peter and John laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit (v 17). It is believed that the evidence that Simon saw was them speaking in tongues. 8:34-39 again speaks of a water baptism. It does not mention a baptism of the Holy Spirit. 9:4-19 As you stated he spoke in tongues later Chap 10 and 19 you agree they spoke in tongues. 16:14-15; 31-34: again speaking of a water baptism. Whenever someone was baptized with the Holy Spirit it specifically states that it was the baptism of the Holy spirit. Summary: Four out of 5 cases tongues was the initial evidence. In the 5th case tongues is alluded to. If 100 percent of the cases in Acts the initial evidence of being filled with the Spirit was tongues then tongues must be important. Mark 16:17-18: As you said these signs are to be taken together. I am going to assume that you agree that the name of Jesus has Power in it. When we use His name we use the power associated with it. "These are the miraculous signs that will accompany believers: They will use the power and authority of my name to force demons out of people. They will speak new languages. They will pick up snakes, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them. They will place their hands on the sick and cure them." Today we 1) speak new languages. 2) Some have the gift of healing and lay hands on the sick and they do recover. 3) There are devils being cast out of people today. 4) I havn't heard of snakes being picked up but I have heard a lot of other miraculous things that have happened. Jesus said "Mar 16:17 "These are some of the signs that will accompany believers". He didn't say apostles, He said believers. I am a believer. You are a believer. These miraculous signs follow us as well if we choose. This is a promise from Him to us. prayon |

327 | Should we ask God for the gift of tongue | 1 Cor 12:11 | prayon | 111618
Yes. Mark 16:17 says that "these signs will follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast our devils, and they shall speak with new tongues...." In other words if you believe you can have the gift of tongues. Acts 2 tells us that as soon as the people were filled with the Holy Spirit they began speaking in tongues, not some of the believers but all the believers (v.4). Tongues is for all believers and is a sign of being filled with the Holy Ghost. In all 5 cases of the baptism of the Holy Ghost in Acts ( Acts 2,8,9,10, and 19) every time the initial evidence of being filled with the Spirit was speaking in tongues. Kalos was right when he said that some gifts are given to different people. Tongues to be used in public is not for everyone. That gift is only for a few. prayon |

329 | wine and acohol | 1 Tim 5:23 | prayon | 111523
Greetings, Here are some scriptures that concern alcohol: Eph 5:18 -Don't get drunk on wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit Pro 20:1 Wine makes people mock, liquor makes them noisy, and everyone under their influence is unwise. Pro 21:17 Whoever loves pleasure will become poor. Whoever loves wine and expensive food will not become rich. Pro 23:29-30 - Who has trouble? Who has misery? Who has quarrels? Who has a complaint? Who has wounds for no reason? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who drink glass after glass of wine and mix it with everything. Gal 5:19-21 - Now, the effects of the corrupt nature are obvious: ...... drunkenness, wild partying, and similar things. I've told you in the past and I'm telling you again that people who do these kinds of things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Rom 13:13 We should live decently, as people who live in the light of day. Wild parties, drunkenness, sexual immorality, promiscuity, rivalry, and jealousy cannot be part of our lives. Hope these are helpful. prayon |

330 | searching for wisdom | Bible general Archive 2 | prayon | 111135
Greetings, I would tell you to obey the voice of the Holy Spirit above all. Many times we become so comfortable in a place that we do not grow anymore. The Holy Spirit has a way of moving us to take us out of our comfort zone and put us in a position where we can be challenged and be able to once again grow. I am not telling you this is what you should do - that is up to the Holy Spirit to tell you what to do. If you believe that God has told you to move on then by all means do it. If you are not sure ask God to give you confirmation and He will; but be sure to not reject that comfirmation of whichever way it leads you. It is possible to do just that because of the history you have with the church that you mentioned above. It is very hard for some people to leave behind what they know and are comfortable with and step out in faith but we have to do just that. We have to learn to place our lives in His hands and step out whether we understand it or not. A few years ago I was told by the Holy Spirit to get ready I would be leaving. My reaction to Him "you must be joking God I am trying to buy a house". Well He wasn't joking. After more comfirmations than I should of needed I packed myself and my children up and came to a place where I knew no one, I had no job, no place to live, and did not have the least idea of why I was here. But God moved on my behalf in ways that were amazing. Trust in Him and lean not to thine own understanding.... On the other hand if He tells you not to leave then stay where you are and pray for the leadership. Submit to the authority that God has placed over you unless there is a clear and direct violation of scripture. In the future God will reward you for your obedience and will full the law of seedtime and harvest (you reap what you sow) in their lives. I hope I have helped. Let me know what happens I will be very interested. prayon |

336 | knowing forgiveness to others | Matt 6:12 | prayon | 110910
Greetings renovateme, Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the world's rulers, of the darkness of this age, against spiritual wickedness in high places. What you are experiencing are attacks of the enemy. When one knows they are in line with God's word we are a threat to the devil. The last thing he wants is for us to be in that place. I would venture to say that as concerned as you are about it you are walking in forgiveness. If you weren't so concerned about it you would not be seeking help. When someone hurts us as in the situation with your daughter is is hard to forgive but I sincerely believe that you have. The most important thing is to re-establish the relationship with your daughter now, and I am guessing you have. If you were still harboring unforgiveness I don't believe that you would of led your ex to the lLord. Again in the situation with your brother that is the work of the enemy trying to keep you from walking in God's love. Somebody once told me to pretend that when you asked forgiveness for something from God that He cast that sin into a lake. In front of the lake is a sign that says "No Fishing!" Once you have asked forgiveness you have been forgiven. No if's, no ands, no buts. YOu are totally forgiven and your slate has been wiped clean. If He did not forgive us when we asked (with a sincere heart of course) then His trip to the cross would of been of no value. So that if any one is in Christ, that one is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (NKJ 2Co 5:17) or God's Word Bible even puts it better: "Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence." You are a new creature! The old has gone according to God's word! Put the past behind you and whenever the devil tries to rear his ugly head ask the Holy Spirit to put him back in his place. Christ promises us that when we are born again He sends the comforter to us. He would not send Him (the comforter) to us to live in us and not hear us. That is just another attack of the enemy. He does hear you! You say yourself that you do not feel angry so why do you say you are holding on to your anger? You are not - you say so yourself. The anger is past - you are the new creature the bible talks about. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to forget. He will. If you ask every time that it comes to mind I promise you that it will come to mind less and less. The devil will come to realize that you are not available for that kind of attack any more. I sometimes think that I am horribly deficient in my prayer life. When I do feel like that I just ask the Holy Spirit for help. I truly believe that it helps immensely to pray in tongues. (that is another topic if you were to ask about it). I would suggest that you do what I do when you feel like your prayers aren't good enough - just talk to Jesus like you would talk to your best friend. Get angry with Him if the need be, it is OK, after all He already knows you are angry - it's not like you can hide it from Him. Just talk to Him like He is sitting across from you - tell Him your concerns. aLook at what the word says about how you feel and if you can't find it in the word get on the forum and ask. We are here to help you when the need arises. You are the awesome child of a King! prayon |

339 | what is the role of the HS in my life? | John 7:39 | prayon | 110817
Greetings becky272 and welcome to the forum, You have found a great place to have your questions answered. To look at these passages we must include v. 37. Jesus is making an appeal here, "If anyone is thirsty let him come to me and drink". "Blessed are those who thirst after righteousness will be filled" (Matt 5:6). What ever you seek after will fill you. If you seek after worldly things then worldly things will be what fills the inside of you, but if you seek after God and the HOly Spirit that is what you will be filled after. In verse 38 it says "out of his (your) belly (innermost being) will flow rivers of living water. Here, Living water, running water, which the Hebrew language calls living, because it is still in motion. This water represents the HOly Spirit which has come to fill you. In the Old Testament God was for the Israelites and was with them but in was not in them. God is for us and with us today but we also have something better - He is actually in us - the part of God that is in us is the comforter Jesus sent us - the Holy Spirit. The graces and comforts of the Spirit are compared to living (meaning running) water, because they are the active quickening principles of spiritual life, and the earnests and beginnings of eternal life. Jesus promised immediate inner and permanent personal satisfaction. Believing on Jesus results in having living (moving) water within one's being (Joh 4:14 But those who drink the water that I will give them will never become thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give them will become in them a spring that gushes up to eternal life.") This promise directly refers to the coming of the Holy Spirit to swell within believers. The promise was fulfilled historically at Pentecost (Acts 2), and applies to every believer. He didn't come to visit for a few days. He came to dwell in you. As for what He wants to do in your life, When you were saved or born again the HOly Spirit entered your life. One thing is He came as our guide. When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into the full truth. He won't speak on his own. He will speak what he hears and will tell you about things to come (Joh 16:13), not only will He guide us into all truth but He will also guide us in the truth of God's word. He will also guide us in life. Look to Him to give you direction. Whatever decision you have to make throughout the day - from what shall I wear to where should I go today ask the Holy Spirit. That is what He is there for - to give you direction. When you are sad or troubled ask the Holy Spirit for comfort - He will give it. That is what he is there for. I have a question for you. Do you feel a peace inside of you? If you do that is because the HOly Spirit lives in you. There is so much more to know about the HOly Spirit - I have only scratched the surface. If you click on my name it will give you my profile. My e mail address is on my profile. Feel free to use it please. I would consider it an honor to correspond with you and encourage you and answer all your questions. May God bless you and keep you. prayon |

340 | that she may show reverence as do] the a | 1 Cor 11:10 | prayon | 110717
Greetings mommapbs,The reason that women were told to wear coverings on their head was because in the Corinth culture prostitutes had to shave their head. Once they were saved they had to wear coverings on their heads so they would not be advertising that they were prostitutes. because of the angels; various are the senses given of these words, some taking them in a proper, others in a figurative sense: some in a proper sense of angels, and these either good or bad. Tertullian (e) understands them of evil angels, and that a woman should cover her head in time of worship, lest they should lust after her; though much rather the reason should be, lest they should irritate and provoke lust in others: but it is better to understand them of good angels, who attend the assemblies of the saints, and observe the air and behaviour of the worshippers; wherefore women should cover their heads with respect to them, and not give offence to those pure spirits, by an indecent appearance: it is agreeable to the notions of the Jews, that angels attend public prayers, and at the expounding of the word; they often speak (f) of an angel, äîîåðä òì äúôìåú "that is appointed over prayers".
