2961 | Who wrote James? | James | EdB | 135317
The general agreement is James is written by James the Half brother of Jesus. However Catholics claim this James to Jesus' cousin. It is written to the twelve tribes scattered abroad. 1:1 However terminlogy used assures us he is writing to Christian Jews 1:19; 2:1, 7 and etc. EdB |

2962 | what is law verses grace in christianity | James | EdB | 236118
If you think of a road with a ditch on both sides I pray this will make sense. Grace only people are in one ditch and say that salvation is a gift, which it is, that you don't need to do anything but believe, which is right as far as it goes. Some take liberties with this and live a life that shouldn't be mentioned among Christians. Then there are the works people on the other side of the road in that ditch. And they say you must live a Christian life, in obedience to the commands of God, which is right, to a point. However many go to the point of trying to earn salvation. They do what they do not out of love for God and man, but because they want to show themselves worthy of God's forgiveness. Now in the middle of the road is the book of James. In that book James readily agrees salvation is a gift of grace something not earned but freely given by a loving God. However to be in that grace there needs to be difference in your life, you are not earning your salvation but rather the grace of salvation is changing you and you live a totally different life. One that is in obedience to Christ. Be very careful here and stay in the middle of the road because the edges of the road are slippery and it is easy to go into one ditch or the other. I tried to give you something understandable rather than tie you all up in theological jardon and proof texts from both sides. And please take the time to sit down and read the Book of James. I pray my response to your question helps. |

2963 | why do we have to go through trials | James 1:2 | EdB | 228968
James 1:2-4 (NKJV) 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. |

2964 | Wisdom - Salvation in Christ? | James 1:5 | EdB | 121053
Mommapbs That is an interesting thought. Here is John MacArthur's view of this text. I find it stands better in the light of all scripture. “1:5 wisdom. James’ Jewish audience recognized this as the understanding and practical skill that was necessary to live life to God’s glory. It was not a wisdom of philosophical speculation, but the wisdom contained in the pure and peaceable absolutes of God’s will revealed in His Word (cf. 3:13,17) and lived out. Only such divine wisdom enables believers to be joyous and submissive in the trials of life. ask of God. This command is a necessary part of the believer’s prayer life (cf. Job 28:12–23; Prov. 3:5–7; 1 Thess. 5:17). God intends that trials will drive believers to greater dependency on Him, by showing them their own inadequacy. As with all His riches (Eph. 1:7; 2:7; 3:8; Phil. 4:19), God has wisdom in abundance (Rom. 11:33) available for those who seek it." MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). 2965 | drinking of wine | James 1:5 | EdB | 225838
There is a line in the sand and either side stand good and faithful Christians. Some that say they can drink wine and some that say they can't. James 1:5 tells us if you lack wisdom in this matter ask God. I would pray to God and seek what He wants for you and your life. It may be different than what God wants for your brother or sister in the Lord. Pray and ask God does He want you drinking wine or not and let His answer settle it for you. I find that most times our conscious is usually what triggers these types of questions. |

2966 | Prayer Sabotaged? | James 1:6 | EdB | 105083
James 1:6,7 pretty much answers your question. James 1:6-8 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. [7] For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; [8] he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. EdB |

2967 | Being tested vs. being tempted. | James 1:13 | EdB | 241868
James 1:12-18 (NASB) 12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. 18 In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures. Notice verse 14 in this passage, Man is tempted when he is lead away with his own desires. 1 John 2:15 tells us those desires are the lust of the eye, lust of the flesh, pride of Life. In the prayer when we ask not to be lead into temptation, what we are asking God to do is to subdue those desires in us. Not to take us where the lust of eyes, lust of the flesh or pride of life will be awakened. |

2968 | Grace vs Works? | James 1:22 | EdB | 242546
You need to reread what Morgant61 answered. Salvation is by grace but salvation brings a transformed life, that transformed life must occur or real salvation never occurred. Now are there exceptions? Yes, thief on the cross, deathbed conversions and etc. But these are "exceptions" not the norm. One thing a transformed life does is teach us to live according to the norm, instead of looking for loopholes. Too many today want to live by grace and seek out every loophole that they imagine might allow them salvation without serving God through a transformed life. You cite many verses that declare salvation by grace but you ignore the whole of scripture that tells us we are bought with a price, bondservants etc. Jesus said if you love me you will keep my commandments. John 14:15. That statement is impossible to get around, when you realize Jesus commanded us to be His witness. May I suggest you read scripture in total and make your conclusions coincide with all of scripture instead of allowing exceptions to influence the rest of scripture. |

2969 | What are Christ's commandments | James 1:22 | EdB | 242549
First I didn't mean for my response to be an accusation of you trying to get out of anything. That said our salvation isn't based on anything we do/did. How once salvation is realized there must be a transformation. 2 Cor. 5:17. In that transformation we assume the role of bond servant bought with a price ( the blood of Jesus). It is no longer our will but the will of the one that lives within us. Your idea of waiting for personal revelation is the best, provided you can do it without any preconceived "revelation". Here is the great part. If you read your bible seeking truth and covered in prayer God will reveal to you the truth. Seek God and His will for you. God will reveal it. |

2970 | Natural Adoption | James 1:27 | EdB | 98034
Tchideckel The Bible does not speak to this exact situation. However James 1:27 says pure religion or faith before God is visiting the orphans in the their time of need. What better way to visit an orphan in a time of need than to provide that orphan a mother and father. I guess the couple your talking about is Christian. If so how much better to adopt a young child to give it life here on earth but also to raise it believing in Christ so that child will also have a life in eternity! As for their motive, who knows perhaps when they seek out their daughter God will place boys need in their heart. Also the scripture says God gives us the desires of our heart. Most read this to mean God gives us what we desire, I believe it is saying once we become God’s God places the desires in our heart. God will, will be done. EdB |

2971 | What do you think? | James 2:10 | EdB | 144865
Nomad1 I really not trying ot defend the church for it's action but I can just imagine the local media getting this story. Headline "LOCAL CHURCH PROMOTES PREMARTIAL SEX". Story First Baptist is renting a house to an unmarried couple. Pastor Smith when asked why he was allowing this to continue said he was showing the couple love. when asked if this wasn't condemned in the Bible the Pastor said, "yes but we have to remember the Bible was written for another time and that society had different standards. Today living together is considered by society as acceptable and if the church would do anything it would appear unloving." When asked if he knew the couple was unmarried before they move in the Pastor said, "No he thought he was renting it a a young man that had began attending Church with them." Church Membership is split over this, some think it is no big deal but some of the older people are unhappy they feel by allowing the couple to live like this on church property they are in effect okaying living together outside of marriage. Marge Thompson a life long member said, "This puts the church in a very bad light, if we allow it to continue it appears we are okaying it. If on the other hand we ask them to marry or move out then it appears we haven't dealt with the couple in love. Something like this would have never have happened a few years ago, living together when I was a young girl was still considered a sin." Deacon Brown responded to the question if they had ever visited the couple? "He said so many don't want to be visited today. People are so busy and a visit is really a interruption in most peoples lives. Therefore the church adopted a plan where prayer cards were made available and on the back there was a box to check if you wanted a visit. We do try to keep in touch through our small group studies, mail outs, website, Sunday School and etc. But you know some people like to attend a church where they blend in and aren't bothered. We do encourage everyone to be involved but some just want to attend church and go home." Lucas Williams another life long member stated, “Things like this just didn’t happen until we took prayer out of the school. Now we have people living together, same sex marriage and homosexuals as pastors. Jesus said when talking to the women caught in adultery “go and sin no more”. Today you can’t say that you have to turn your head to sin or be accused of being unloving. If you do anything else it will be turned around that you were wrong. You weren’t supportive, you didn’t love them, you should have prayed for them, you should have visited them, etc. Perhaps it is time we get back to what Jesus said, “go and sin no more” and stop blaming everyone else for our sins.” I imagine that would have been a interesting read in the local paper. Perhaps the couple should have thought how their actions would have reflected on the church before they put the church into the position they did. That said there is no excuse for a church that didn’t pray for this couple. EdB |

2972 | Have we chosen freely? | James 2:19 | EdB | 87022
Colin Read the Old Testament is one story after another of men and women that choose to follow God, and the tragic results in the lives of those that didn’t. Now there are those that say that has all changed we are predestined. However that teaching invalidates the faith hall of fame seen in Hebrews 11 where God names those that had faith to faithfully follow him. Instead they want us to view this list as a group of people that had no other choice than to follow God. Predestination was the invention of men in a desperate search to embarrass Rome. They picked up on a word and ran with it thus trying to disprove Rome’s previous teaching. Their plan was if we can punch holes in Rome’s doctrine they could then wrest control out of Rome’s hands. It wasn’t until nearly 100 years later that many good and righteous men saw the path this was leading and tried to set the record straight. Unfortunately the balance of power had already shifted and instead of being able to correct this wrong, they were silenced. Many be being hung or burnt by these good and righteous predistinationalist. However as man has been able to read the Bible for himself he can clearly see God sent his Son for whosoever would believe, not just the chosen few. That God desires none to perish not just the one He had chosen. The God wills all men should be saved not just those he picked. Christ died for the sins of the World not just for the world according to Calvin. EdB |

2974 | You are a teacher of God's word? Does th | James 3:1 | EdB | 55366
The Bible is Right I believe any man that doesn't handle the Word of God with fear and trepidation is seriously deceived. A message is to be inspired by the Holy Spirit but the wording of the that message is hinged on the Pastor and his willingness to be a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many teachers have used an inspire message to promote their teaching or ministry rather that the Kingdom of God. The Word says they do this to their destruction. 2 Peter 2:1-22 That one warning should raise a fear in any teacher. I think some have done this unintentionally and others to accomplish their fleshly goals. However I think both stand accused of trying to share in God’s glory and that just happen! EdB |

2975 | If they teach to their own destruction, | James 3:1 | EdB | 55520
The Bible is Right Since I'm not a strict "once saved always saved" fan I believe that there are men that have become so obsessed with success that they have fallen in league with Satan. Again was it done knowingly or unintentionally I don't know. However I think Judgement will be very hard on them. As to the people they mislead, to me they are without excuse. They had the truth of God sitting on their laps (most probably) the whole time. If they had access to a Bible and were deceived then they have no one to blame but themselves. The Word says to work out OUR OWN salvation with fear and trembling. It doesn't say let your pastor work it out for you. EdB |

2976 | Are you saying that a person who has bee | James 3:1 | EdB | 55612
The Bible is Right Hebrews 6:4-6 and Hebrews 10:26-31 to me says it is possible. No I do not believe you can be saved sin lose your salvation, repent be saved again sin lose your salvation repent be saved and etc. I think to lose your salvation you have to make a willful and very deliberate act of apostasy to accomplish it. To me Ps 69:28 infers there are some people that have had their name removed from the Book of Life. How and why I can't say for certain, we know it is due to apostasy, I suspect it is because they found Jesus, and later they tried to profit through it. If you agree or disagree fine let's us not start a once saved always saved debate. They have raged on this forum since the beginning and I don't think anyone on either side has been convinced to change their position. I think I have heard every argument on once saved always saved and I don't think there is anything you can say to change my mind. EdB |

2977 | How did James know about Forest Fires | James 3:5 | EdB | 74325
dweaver Remember Israel was once the land of milk and honey. the climate of Israel changed radically letting the land become drier. Interestingly the weather patterns now being observed show an increasing amount of moisture. Possibly in preparation of fulfillment of the prophecy of a rose blooming in the desert. Also note how many sieges and wars took place in Israel each one used vital wood. Beginning with the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem and continuing through 70 AD every major battle consisted of major sieges, there had to be forests to support that. We are told upon the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans in 70 AD crosses could be seen in all directions for nearly as far as the eye can see. That had to take a lot of trees. Then Rome salted most of the earth around Jerusalem and many other places through out Israel. So when we look at pictures of Israel today we have to remember what we are seeing is not the nation it was 2000 years ago and certainly not what it was when God lead the Children of Israel to the land of milk and honey, where one cluster of grapes required two men with a pole between them to carry it. 2978 | What scripture is James referring to? | James 4:5 | EdB | 67821
retxar I think the best answer to this qusiton comes from John MacArthur and his study Bible. "4:5 Scripture says. A common NT way of introducing an OT quote (John 19:37; Rom. 4:3; 9:17; 10:11; 11:2; Gal. 4:30; 1 Tim. 5:18). The quote that follows, however, is not found as such in the OT; it is a composite of general OT teaching. The Spirit … yearns jealously. This difficult phrase is best understood by seeing the “spirit” as a reference not to the Holy Spirit, but to the human spirit, and translating the phrase “yearns jealously” in the negative sense of “lusts to envy.” James’ point is that an unbelieving person’s spirit (inner person) is bent on evil (cf. Gen. 6:5; 8:21; Prov. 21:10; Eccl. 9:3; Jer. 17:9; Mark 7:21–23). Those who think otherwise defy the biblical diagnosis of fallen human nature; and those who live in worldly lusts give evidence that their faith is not genuine (cf. Rom. 8:5–11; 1 Cor. 2:14)." 2979 | Which spirit does God jealously desire? | James 4:5 | EdB | 146231
James is speaking to fellow believers. The Spirit here is the Holy Spirit that dwells in very believer. He jealously desires us to worship God not he things of this world. God's desire is for us to abandon our worldly wants and desires and seek Him and Him alone. To many Christians refuse to let go of the world they seek fine living and even search scripture for verses that might promise this. But scripture tells us to seek God, His Kingdom and all else will take care of itself. That doesn't mean we will get all else it means our "real" needs will be met. God is jealous he will not share our love with the world. EdB |

If your a Catholic reading this you wait until death in eminent, since this is the passage they base their practice of 'last rites' on. :-) However if your like me you call for the elders to pray the minute you feel something coming on. Praise the Lord He heals my body.
