2902 | Alter Calls? | Rom 10:9 | EdB | 25177
Hugger CDBJ and Charis gave you good information. "Altar Calls" are actually fairly new to the church world. I think Finney or someone from around his time frame came up with the idea. I especially liked CDBJ’s pastors statement “all they did was to jump through someone's psychological hoop”. I say I like it in that it is contains fact not the idea. The fact is many Pastors give emotion packed charges and many times the people respond as a form of emotional release rather than real salvation. I saw a man give an altar call where hundreds responded and he never mentioned sin, salvation, repentance, cleansing blood, the cross, forgiveness or anything connected to salvation. He gave a rip your heart out and throw it on the floor unless you come to altar type call. I have always wondered what God thought of that. God is looking at the heart, I believe you can be saved lying bed, walking the aisles, sitting/standing in the pew, or grasping your last breath. If you ask Jesus into your heart He is faithful to respond. EdB |

2903 | Name it and claim it?????????????? | Matt 4:3 | EdB | 25078
The reason it bothers you is you have discernment. Name and claim it is a false teaching if it were true it would show the Apostle Paul to be an idiot. Instead of Paul working so hard to take offerings for the Jerusalem (to see them through a famine) he should have went to Jerusalem and preached “Name it and Claim it” and they would have had all the food they wanted. My question today is why don’t the “Name it and Claim it” advocates go to the Sudan and have all the enslaved Christians there naming and claiming their freedom? Or why don’t they go to the Islands of Indonesia where 63,000 Christians are awaiting their slaughter at the hands of Muslims and have them “name and claim” deliverance from this. (By the way unless the UN or some other outside force intervenes there are 63,000 Christians Men women and children that are going to slaughter in a Islamic Jihad in the Philippians. Every one should be praying for their deliverance). For more information see www.persecution.com Name it Claim it only preaches in America to spoiled Americans. Can’t you just see a Haitian Christian living in the poverty of Haiti naming and claiming a ‘2002’ BMW. There is not one shred of scripture that supports this teaching and again I remind you if it were true all the Apostles at one time or another had reason to use it and didn’t as evidenced by their testimonies, lives, and deaths. 2904 | what about the K J V | Rev 3:10 | EdB | 24935
Preacher man They stopped using the king's English hundreds of year ago and since I never used it I figured there was no point in confusing the issue more by trying to read a Bible written in it. It is the NKJV, NASB, or NLT for me. Yes I imagine you do go through a lot of tribulation reading a KJV. :-) EdB |

2905 | How does Romans 8:38-39 fit in with Heb | Heb 6:4 | EdB | 24907
Desertone Since I got to you first here is what I think it means. No one absolutely no one can remove you from Jesus' hand. However I think you can remove yourself. In other words nothing can steal your salvation but you can give it away. A believer is eternally secure in that Satan can not remove him from the hand of our Savior but I do believe we can yield to flesh fall into sin and remove ourselves. EdB |

2906 | Hebrews 11:32 Who was sawed in two? | Hebrews | EdB | 24885
I was just reading in ISBE (Internation Standard Bible Encylopedia) that the Prophet Isaiah was by church tradition reported to have been sawn in half by King Manasseh. This was also reported also by Justin Martyr in 150 AD that Isaiah was sawn in half by a wooden saw. This tradition is further confirmed by a Jewish Apocalypse of the 2nd century AD, entitled, The Ascension of Isaiah, and by Epiphanius in his so-called Lives of the Prophets. Wow what a way to go. 2908 | By definition is it out of order? | 1 Tim 5:20 | EdB | 24444
SinJin2 Maybe not out of order but hard to imagine being in love. First the word presbuteros says old it doesn't mean old in years necessarily but rather old in faith (mature Christian). I assume your still talking about the widow in the first part of this thread. any corrction should be attempted privately and only after that fails should public correction be considered. I would think Romans 1:29-30; 2 Cor. 12:20; James 4:11; 1 Peter 2:1 would have better food for correction in this situation. EdB |

2909 | Where is "Go against the Flow" at? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 24438
Brandyb "Go against the Flow" is a secular term and is not in the bible. However the Word tells us in Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Which is pretty much the same idea. The world wants us to think like it but the God tells us to think like him. I pray this helps EdB |

2910 | what texts did church choose canon from? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 24357
Navygirl To answer the rest of your questions basically the Christian Bible is divided by Old Testament and New Testament. The Old Testament is divided further by the first 5 books which are called the Pentateuch (Genesis-Deuteronomy) the books of History (Joshua-Esther) then the poetic books Job-Song of Solomon, followed by the prophets Isaiah–Malachi. The New Testament is divided the Gospels Matthew-John, History The Book of Acts, Pauline Epistles Romans-Philemon, General Epistles Hebrews –Jude, and the Apocalypse or the Book of Revelation. Most any translation has been directly translated from the Hebrew and Greek. The most popular are King James which because it was done so long ago carries old English words and to many is hard to understand. New King James basically the King James with the old and uncommon words replaced with modern terms (thy-you). New American Standard which is about the closest to a word for word translation which makes reading it a little harder since it follows speech patterns we don’t commonly use. Then there is New International Version this was an attempt to convey the meaning of the original but make it very understandable. It is a an idea to idea direct translation. Another translation is the New Living Translation which is a direct translation but written to modern terms and figures of speech. It is very understandable and many times can be used almost like a commentary to tell you what the other translations are saying. Again I pray this helps EdB |

2911 | what texts did church choose canon from? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 24356
Navygirl Hi and welcome to the forum. The cannon (deciding which books belong in the bible) for the Old Testament was done by Jewish scholars from manuscripts written in Hebrew. These were later compiled and translated in Koine (common) Greek and called the Septuagint. This work was done before Jesus’ birth and Jesus had access to this work so if there were problems and such we can assume He would have said something. The cannon for the New Testament was done after Jesus’ death and could possibly been done from the original writings (which have since been lost). The test used in this cannon had many points but it basically boiled down to the book had to be written by an eyewitness observer of Jesus’ ministry. After the cannon was closed copies of the New Testament traveled to various locations. Probably the most famous was the Alexandrine and the Byzantine text which were later found and used for some of the new translations. The accuracy of Bible can be attested to by many manuscripts that were lost and then found hundreds or in some cases thousands of years later and compared to modern manuscripts and found to be virtually identical. The catholic church later in history decided to include the Apocrypha which are books that were originally determined to be non canon books. Again there is no real problem here as they do not contain any contradicting teachings or doctrine and for the most confirms what the rest of the Bible says. As I said before most of the original manuscripts have since been lost but there are hundreds that are one or two copies removed. We have far more proofs ( ancient manuscripts) of the Bible’s accuracy than we do of the manuscripts of William Shakespeare and no one ever questions them. I pray this will answer your questions. 2912 | Isn't my Mother in Heaven? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 24189
Kathy Right now Jesus sits at the right of God. Mark 16:19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. Where God is, is heaven. Paul told us in 2 Cor. 5:6-8 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— [7] for we walk by faith, not by sight— [8] we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. To state it more plainly Paul is telling us that to be absent (dead)from the body is to be present with the Lord and we have already seen Jesus is in heaven. Now about your aunt, being a Jehovah Witness she has received many hours of training in how to make Christians question their faith and she has been heavily trained in dealing with rebuttals. This training is done on when they meet Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Before you start to take her on you need to do a lot of study. You need to read the Bible and understand what you believe. Then you need to read about Jehovah witnesses and how to debate them. Even after you do all of this the task will not be easy. By the way your aunt also believes she will never go heaven but will always have to live in a second rate place and only those "Elect Brothers" get to go to the really good place. Doesn't that sound man made only certain people get the best the rest not matter what they do get stuck with junk. The bible assures us this isn’t true. Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Notice what it said we are all one. Do not lose faith or let your aunt change your mind. When we die we do go to heaven if we trust in the Lord, and we will never be separated from our Lord again. Again I pray this helps. Be blessed EdB |

2913 | Is heaven going to be on earth | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 24175
Kathy Hi and welcome to the forum! In answer to your question is heaven going to be on earth? Basically yes! 2 Peter 3:7 tells us earth and heaven are going to be consumed by fire. 1 John 2:17 confirms this world is passing away. Rev 21:1 again confirms this and further reading of Revelation 21 tells us a about new heaven and a new earth. We see reading in Revelation 21-22 that Jesus is going to dwell in the new Jerusalem here on earth and we are going to rule and reign with Him so we will be here too. Reading in Rev 22:3 tells us the throne of God and of the Lamb will in this New Jerusalem so we can assume this is where they will dwell and I assure you where they dwell is heaven. I hope this helps. EdB |

2914 | Jesus in an English town as a child? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 23921
Nitab Hi and welcome to the forum. There is no scriptural support of such a story. The Bible records that Jesus' traveled to Egypt to escape from King Herod there is no mention of any travel to England. There is also not scriptural support that Joseph of Aramathia was Jesus' uncle. I did not see the movie but I can tell you it is totally outside of scriptural support and has no validity. Shepherd’s chapel is a cult see Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry at www.carm.org EdB |

2916 | babtisim and two places when you die | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 23864
Sunflower Hi and welcome to the forum. No you do not need to be baptized to be saved, but if you love Jesus you will get baptized. When you die if your saved you go immediately into the presence of the Lord which is in heaven. If you die and have decided to reject Jesus and His offer of salvation then you made the choice to go to hell (which is a hot dry place) where you await judgement day and from there to the lake of fire a place created for Satan but will be occupied by those that refuse Jesus. John 12:47-48 "If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. [48] "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. Be Blessed EdB |

2919 | Exodus 26:1...First mention of cherubim? | Ex 26:1 | EdB | 23768
VillaSanJuan God revealed to Moses the tabernacle, and how to build in as seen in Exodus 25:9. We are told in Hebrews the earthly tabernacle was a model of the heavenly one. The one that Jesus entered to offer his blood upon the altar. God gave Moses exacting detail and I can easily imagine God showing him the curtains and the Cherubim and even telling him the Hebrew name. The answer to your last question why did God give the name Cherubim to the angels. First I do not believe Cherubim is a generic name for all angels but a name for a class. Since we do not know what the word Cherubim means we can not speculate on their function. |
