261 | what is the Granville Sharpe's Rule? | Titus 2:13 | Hank | 197658
Hello, Servant4 :: Good question indeed! If you would like to read more on this interesting and important topic in addition to Tim's fine answer, go to http://www.aomin.org/GRANVILL.html ...... The article, written by James R. White, is worthwhile reading for everyone who would like to augment his understanding of what the Bible actually teaches, and how unambiguously and incontrovertibly it teaches, about the deity of Jesus Christ. --Hank
262 | KJV only believers. | 2 Tim 3:16 | Hank | 197629
Thanks for the warm greeting, Justme. I'll pass it along to "Mrs. Hank," whose name is Dorothy but nearly everyone calls her Dottie except me. I call her Dortie, because when we were dating her little three-year old nephew called her "Aunt Dortie," being the best he could pronounce Dorothy. It stuck and she's been my beloved Dortie for over 48 years. ..... We got no snow in, around or near our place in the Ozark foothills. ...... I enjoy being politically incorrect so much that I'll say it again, MERRY CHRISTMAS.
263 | KJV only believers. | 2 Tim 3:16 | Hank | 197627
Dear Justme :: From what I've been able to learn about the KJVOnlyists over the years, they are, by and large, a hard-nosed bunch to deal with. Typically, this crowd not only exalts the King James Bible above all others in general excellence, but they go a step farther and assert that the translation itself is not only divinely inspired but that it actually corrects errors in the ancient manuscripts from which the translation was made. This is, of course, tantamount to saying that the KJV translators were themselves divinely inspired, a quantum leap into pure fantasy for which there is not a shred of evidence of any kind. In fact, this cockamamie postulate is disavowed by the translators themselves in their Preface called "The Translators to the Reader." This Preface was written by the translators of the Authorized Version (King James) and appeared in full in the 1611 printing. Most publishers of the KJV do not print this Preface today, but it can be found in nearly all editions of the well-known "Cambridge Bible" printed by the Cambridge University Press. Every adherent to the King-James-Only cultist notion that this translation alone is the Authorized Version of God Himself should study this Preface carefully and open mindedly. ...... Another excellent resource is "The King James Version Debate" (Subtitled, "A Plea for Realism") by D. A. Carson. This is a scholarly refutation of the point of view that the King James Version is superior to all other English translations of the Bible. I own the book in trade paperback, published by Baker Books, ISBN 0801024277. ..... Justme, I hope these hints help you. The subject is quite involved and much too complex to lend itself to a proper treatment and full discussion on the Forum. Merry Christmas! --Hank
264 | New NASB Bibles? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 197585
lunlock :: You might wish to ask your bookstore for their source regarding forthcoming changes in the NASB. It did not come from the Lockman Foundation, translators and publishers of the NASB. And they should know! The information you were given is rumor. --Hank

266 | Sow a seed for my prayer request? | Prov 3:6 | Hank | 197385
Dear jesus1km :: Yours is an unusual user screen name. The curiosity in me nudges me to ask what it means. :-) ..... Ma'am, you ask a question which also appears curious: "Do I need to sow seed every time I want God to do something for me?" Your question has the ear-marks of sincerity, but it sounds much more like the kind of verbiage the false word-faith teachers use on the television than anything God says in His word! God is not in the business of swapping favors for seed. The Bible teaches nothing of the sort. The very clear and unmistakable but patently unbiblical implication with which the seed-faith TV hucksters pander to the gullible is that human beings can bargain with God: so much seed-faith money (translation: money sent to the false teachers to line their purses) for so much divine blessing. ...... No, dear heart, you do not need to sow a seed every time you want God to do something for you. The Bible never teaches anything of the sort. The biblical way to approach God's throne of grace is through prayer, not 'seed-faith' money: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God" (Philippians 4:6). ...... May I offer a suggestion? By means of a concordance or a topical Bible, search for and study all that the Bible has to teach you about prayer, its importance, and how to engage in it. You might try using the "Get Bible Text" resource at the right of this page, which our sponsers, the Lockman Foundation, have graciously provided for our use. Merely type in such words as pray, or prayer, and you're on your way! Welcome to this forum. I note that in only two days you've entered some 40 posts. That's being prolific indeed. As you already doubtlessly have discovered, this is a web site dedicated exclusively to Bible study and to the concept embodied in the phrase sola scriptura, and it is hoped that you will find such an endeavor both pleasant and profitable to you as you grow in the Christian faith. --Hank

268 | Becoming a Branch sprouting from Jesus | John 13:7 | Hank | 197041
Dear Carol Nemitz :: The views you expressed in your post 196987 are interesting but appear to be flirting with ideas that are not supported by Scripture. Your reference to "plugging in" is reminiscent of something that Luther Burbank would have done to a potato, but I can't recall having read anything in the Bible that would lead me to the conclusion you've reached. On what do you therefore base it? ...... Welcome to Study Bible Forum, but please do keep in mind that the Forum's singular emphasis is on Scripture, thus leaving virtually no room for recondite and speculative excursions. --Hank
269 | The Christian response? | Judg 1:13 | Hank | 196986
Hello, justme :: Preachers should not act like political leaders and political leaders should not act like preachers. The responsibility of preachers today is to preach the word, the same as it's been since antiquity, since apostolic times when Paul charged Timothy to do just that in the fourth chapter of II Timothy. ...... The idea that mortal man can usher in the return of Christ by attacking Iran, or by doing anything else under the sun, is singularly preposterous. God is sovereign. He alone is in charge of His universe. Oh my, will we never learn? ...... These preachers running around spouting off about what candidates for public office they endorse. or what country we should attack next, or making wild and highly eisegetical eschatological predictions, need to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest II Timothy 4; i.e., they need be up and doing what a preacher is charged by Scripture to do: to preach the word of God to both saints and sinners. No political reform, no political platform, no political party in the history of the world has ever saved so much as one sinner. It is the gospel of Christ that is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16). That gospel is what needs to be preached. Nothing more and nothing less. --Hank
270 | please explain chronicles | 1 Chronicles | Hank | 196918
Mat :: The preferred method of learning Chronicles is to study Chronicles! As a preparatory step to your study you may find it helpful to read an introduction to the books such as you are likely to find in most reference Bibles or in a Bible dictionary. You may also find it helpful to read the books of Kings before you approach the books of Chronicles, since the Chronicles embody many of the events recorded in the Kings. --Hank
271 | Who were the firstborn? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 196875
Hello, Jim :: Not only do I extend to you a hearty welcome to Study Bible Forum but congratulate you as well upon your having filled in your User Profile concurrent with your very first post. ....... Firstborn simply means the offspring who came first in the order of birth; the eldest child in a group of siblings. ....... From Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary: "First-born sons enjoyed certain special privileges (Deut. 21:17; Gen. 25:23, 31, 34; 49:3; 1 Chron. 5:1; Heb. 12:16; Ps. 89:27). The 'first-born of the poor' signifies the most miserable of the poor (Isa. 14:30). The destruction of the first-born was the last of the plagues inflicted on the Egyptians (Ex. 11:1-8; 12:29,30)." ...... Again welcome, Jim, with every good wish that you may find in Lockman's Bible Forum a place both to learn more about God's word and to teach it to others; a place both to be enlightened and to let your light shine before others. --Hank

kvrock: Extract from your post 196791: "When I filled out my registration, I typed in my birth date. They put Taurus in there." ..... To whom, pray tell us, does "they" refer: who "put Taurus in there"? Sir, we are not prepared to believe, not for an instant, that the Lockman Foundation has suddenly begun to supplement Bible study with astrology. Will you please explain, if you can, this enigma to us at Study Bible Forum? --Hank

275 | Are there any scriptures in the New Test | Mark 7:19 | Hank | 196250
Melissa :: Leviticus chapter 11 does not treat of foods that are forbidden to Christians. The Old Testament dietary laws never were intended to apply to anyone other than the nation of Israel. Jesus declared all foods clean (see Mark 7:19). Other New Testament passages that touch upon dietary matters are Acts 10 and Romans 14. --Hank
276 | sex with ex-wife | 1 Thess 4:3 | Hank | 196063
Obviously an ex-wife is no longer a wife, the bond of marriage having been severed by divorce. To engage in intimate relations with such a woman is therefore as much a sin as having sex with any other woman outside of marriage. It is immoral. and immorality is solidly condemned in Scripture. See, for example, 1 Cor. 6:18; 7:12; 2 Cor. 12:21; Gal. 5:19; Eph. 5:5; 1 Thess. 4:3. --Hank
277 | Pitt Minion format? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 196047
Greetings to TC from Coventry :: Thank you for the helpful hints about the the Cambridge University Press series of Pitt Minion Bibles. I'd read something of the history of this series before, but the details had escaped me, although I remembered that the font size was rather small, too small for a septuagenarian like me to read with comfort. 279 | will ignorant people be lost? | Acts 4:12 | Hank | 196038
Hi, spirit :: Thanks for your question. BradK has cited several passages from God's word that make it clear that there is salvation in no other than Jesus Christ. The only point I wish to emphasize is that whatever man may opine about salvation (or any other theological matter) does not change what God has said in His word -- not one whit. And we who read His word must be always on guard lest we read into it what it does not say (a faulty way of interpretation called eisegesis). It's easy enough to engage in wishful thinking. That's a human weakness that comes naturally to most of us, but it can lead to all sorts of error when we try to mix our own wishful thinking with what Scripture teaches. It won't work. It's like trying to mix oil and water. ...... You asked the question, "What is your response?" I rather wish you'd asked, "What does the Bible teach?" But I'll answer your question in this way: My response is that we should always go by what the Bible teaches and never by what man thinks, believes, says, or feels about any spiritual matter. --Hank
280 | Signs and Wonders? | Matt 6:33 | Hank | 195934
Dear Cuddle :: Not much I can add to the fine responses from Doc and Brad except to say that they have dispensed sage advice on IHOP. You mentioned that you've relocated and I'd encourage you to check out IHOP in your new locale to your heart's content, but to make sure it's the pancake house and not the house that serves up signs and wonders, replete with hands that ooze oil and jewels that fall out of space. It causes one to wonder whether this is a house of prayer or a house of horrors! Surely, Cuddle, there is an orthodox company of believers in your new area. I pray that you will diligently seek it. --Hank
