Bible Question:
Last night I watched a television program in which Rev. John Hagee spoke. Rev. Hagee was on Public Television. I was dumbfounded and found him to be remarkable. Rev. Hagee believes we need to have a preemptive attack on Iran, asap. Rev. Hagee believes we will usher in the return of Christ by such an attack. Verses were quoted from the usual verses that refer the end of times. Having watched Rev. Hagee several times on television, I think most of his preaching has to do with "end times". I am concerned that when Rev. Hagee speaks as one who is very knowledgable in the Bible and claims to be an "Evangelical Christian" he is misleading the public. The interviewer did say there are more than 25 different kinds Baptist groups. But the idea was put forth that this dod represent the majority of "Enangelical Christians". This next year being a presidential election year, should Christian leaders really speak out like as Rev. Hagee has? Should high profile leaders like Rev. Pat Robinson, publically announce their support of a person running for office? How does Romans 14:22 fit into being a Christian? Should a Christian vote for the best qualified person, if the person is not a Christian, or a Christian who lacks qualifications? justme |
Bible Answer: Hello, justme :: Preachers should not act like political leaders and political leaders should not act like preachers. The responsibility of preachers today is to preach the word, the same as it's been since antiquity, since apostolic times when Paul charged Timothy to do just that in the fourth chapter of II Timothy. ...... The idea that mortal man can usher in the return of Christ by attacking Iran, or by doing anything else under the sun, is singularly preposterous. God is sovereign. He alone is in charge of His universe. Oh my, will we never learn? ...... These preachers running around spouting off about what candidates for public office they endorse. or what country we should attack next, or making wild and highly eisegetical eschatological predictions, need to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest II Timothy 4; i.e., they need be up and doing what a preacher is charged by Scripture to do: to preach the word of God to both saints and sinners. No political reform, no political platform, no political party in the history of the world has ever saved so much as one sinner. It is the gospel of Christ that is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16). That gospel is what needs to be preached. Nothing more and nothing less. --Hank |
