244 | Layman, what's up with that? | Bible general Archive 4 | srbaegon | 214166
Hello creaston, The concept is from the Levitical priesthood where there is a distinction between those in the Lord's assembly who can approach the Lord and those who cannot. The layman or common person cannot. Since the church practices (or should be) the priesthood of all believers, this distinction should not be made among Christians. Steve |

245 | Most important in book of Numbers? | Numbers | srbaegon | 214141
Hello steach, Welcome to SBF. There are two that come to mind: 1) the 12 spies in Canaan (chapters 13-14); and 2) Korah's rebellion (chapter 16). The former is probably more important, but that is a subjective answer. Steve |

246 | What does judgement look like | 2 Cor 5:10 | srbaegon | 214002
Hello bill0624, Actually, Jesus did say that the work to be done was to believe whom god had sent (John 6:29). And the focus on the great commission is to "make disciples." That is the active verb in the sentence. Going, teaching, and baptizing are modifiers. What Jesus said about salvation cannot be divorced from the rest of Scripture. If we listen only to him concerning salvation, then what do we do with the statements Moses, Samuel, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Paul, Peter, John, etc? Are they to be ignored? The life of faith is one of obedience from beginning to end, so I'm not sure what distinctions you are trying to make. Steve |

247 | Soul winning scriptures | Mark 16:15 | srbaegon | 213933
Hi Eric, As for scope, check out "About the Forum" in the Information box on the left. I especially would like to point out this part of it: "it's not a discussion group or topical survey, but an ever growing 'expository repository'" So the forum is not so much a place for "What motivates you?" but rather "How do I understand this Scripture in order to apply it?" And believe me, the line gets crossed rather often. Steve |

248 | Soul winning scriptures | Mark 16:15 | srbaegon | 213919
Hello Eric, Welcome, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Strictly speaking your question is outside the scope of this forum. But since you asked, I will give you what I like. Gen 12:1-3 (God's blessing is meant for all people) Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." 1 Kings 8:41-43 (God desires that his works be made known so others will come to him) Likewise, when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a far country for your name's sake (for they shall hear of your great name and your mighty hand, and of your outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this house, hear in heaven your dwelling place and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to you, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house that I have built is called by your name. 2 Tim 2:2 (Believers are to pass on and ground others in the faith) And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 249 | Over-explaining simple verses? | 1 Tim 2:3 | srbaegon | 213718
Hello PaulD, Part of good hermeneutics is to assume the plain, straight-forward meaning of the text unless there is a good reason not to. Steve |

250 | How Holy Is Marriage? | Matt 16:6 | srbaegon | 213622
You had a question on Val's comment: "'but each man/women was held responsible for their choices and decisions' Can you verify this statement with scripture?" Here is my response from Ezek 18:19-20 (ESV) Yet you say, "Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?" When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. Steve |

251 | Transgressions | Matt 16:6 | srbaegon | 213621
Hello fcs375, The penalty of sin is not passed down from one generation to another. Consider Ezek 18:19-20 Yet you say, "Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?" When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. Read all of Ezekiel 18 for context. Guilt and penalty are not passed on but consequences can be. Steve |

252 | Risen Saints who appeared to Many | Luke 16:31 | srbaegon | 213208
Hello kam, Just a couple of quick thoughts. First, while historians wrote much that happened during that era, they still were normal people that would not want to publicize something that may lead people away from their own agendas. A Jew promoting a resurrection based on Jesus' death would be undercutting his own belief system, be put out of his synagogue, or both. That will not happen. The Romans would do the same as they were holding to polytheism and emperor worship. Second, as for the argument of strong testimony, your friend misunderstands completely. The power is not in the miracle but in the gospel. When Jesus related the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16, he recounts how the rich man asked Abraham to send Lazarus back to his brothers because they would believe someone who rose from the dead. Abraham's response is telling: He said to him, "If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead." In addition the apostles never talked about the miracles to promote the gospel. They proclaimed Christ and him crucified as the final sacrifice for sin. The miracles attested to the message but were not the basis or even an integral part. Steve |

258 | Iam having some questions | John 17:1 | srbaegon | 212473
Hello KcabmI4, You stated: "Where is it saying these peoples of the Old Testiment 'they were saved by the grace of God' meaning Salvation. Salvation is through faith Christ Jesus. According to the Scripture. The people in the Old Testiment were not saved as we know salvation." 1. Abraham was counted righteous because he believed (Genesis 15:6b). Paul says that Christians receive salvation for the same reason as Abraham (Romans 4:1-12). 2. Abraham believed in God's word (Genesis 15:6a). Paul says that Christians receive salvation for the same reason as Abraham (Romans 10:5-17). 2. The righteous man lives by faith (Habakkuk 2:4). Paul agrees it is the same for Christians (Romans 1:16-17). So you see, salvation is a result of faith from beginning to end according to what God had revealed. That being the case, the only possible difference between Abraham and us is that the Lord Jesus fulfilled all that the Law required for an atoning sacrifice. We believe on that finished work rather than believing on the works of the Law. Steve |

260 | Am I ignorant | 1 Cor 12:1 | srbaegon | 212122
Hello, You are correct that the issue is a spiritual one, but emotions have nothing to do with the matter. Truth is truth regardless of how we feel. I also did not equate homosexual with transsexual activity. They are not the same though they are both sinful practice. You asked if the list of sins are any more heinous. All sin is heinous and carry the penalty of death as you have pointed out. Your last set of verses from Isaiah and Paul are directed to the those who live by faith in obedience to the Word of God. They are not given to the general populace, which you seem to infer by your use of them. Steve |
