21 | Definitions - God? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 17143
Please define God. I am putting together a primer for Life in Christ Jesus. As some of you know, I serve the Lord in Japan, and need your input. Remember, don't take for granted that all people know everything about Christianity (like Americans :-)) I will be asking for other definitions in the future. Please help me to think of other things that should be defined in order to understand Life in Christ Jesus for those who do not live in 'Christian' countries. Also, though I would appreciate 'simple' Scriptures to help in the definition, know that Scripture *alone* is not understood by a good portion of the world. Use commonly understood terms and concepts, and common sense. Many thanks and blessings in Christ Jesus, charis |

22 | Christian Primer Terms? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 18115
Dear Saints and fellows, Again I ask for help in creating a primer for new Christians and those 'on the brink.' The first class will be Christian-Bible terminology. I would like to give basic definitions pertinent to starting a life in Christ Jesus. Please rememeber that I am living in a country with less than 1 percent Christian population (Japan), and very little knowledge of things many would take for granted. A few terms I would like to bring up are: God, Holy Spirit, Trinity, Messiah-Christ, heaven, hell, salvation, justification, redemption, Bible-Old Testament-New Testament, prophecy, ministry, faith, baptism...etc. Please give me a definition of one or more of the above, with a clear Bible reference (Not too many!) Let me know what you might want to add to the above list. Please, do not 'wax poetic' or philosophize. Also, don't refer me to another book or web-site...tell me what YOU think. Be brief; I want to give a list of basic definitions, explain the basics, then have some free discussion, all in about 90 minutes. Think what is most important to you. Thank you all for you help. I plan on publishing the course outline on my homepage as an 'open source.' I pray that it will be a blessing to many in non-Christian nations, and maybe in some so-called 'Christian nations' as well. Blessing to all in Christ Jesus, charis |

23 | FATHER fixation? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 18573
Dear casiv, I have been reading this thread, and do not quite get the focus of attention you are putting on the FATHER. I well understand that all things were created by God the Father, but now we live in a age when the fulness of the triune God has been made evident. Furthermore: 'And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."' Matthew 28:18 NASB. Also: "...when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed--for our testimony to you was believed. To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Thessalonians 1:10-12 NASB. Presently, our salvation and glorification rests in the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. He has been given all authority. I suspect that emotionally dwelling on the first Person of the Godhead feels good, but we cannot neglect the spiritual reality that the author and perfecter of our faith is the Lord Jesus. So... "...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:2 NASB If we are going to fix our eyes on a single Person of the Godhead, should it not be Jesus? Bless you, my friend, in Christ Jesus, charis |

Dear Jenson, Greetings in Jesus' name! I am curious about the results of your poll concerning the use of grape juice instead of alcoholic wine. Is there a result or conclusion? :-) BTW, does your church use wine? Blessings in Christ Jesus, charis |

25 | Milk and meat? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 18768
Dear casiv, Bleesings and peace in Jesus' name! If I interpret your comments correctly, Jesus is milk and the Father is meat? I, too, am curious about your user screen name. We've had our share of prophets :-) In Christ Jesus, charis |

27 | Have you tried e-Sword? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 25796
Dear EdB and forum saints, Greetings in Jesus' name! Have you tried the e-Sword Bible software? I have been using it for about two months now, and it is very impressive! It is also FREE! (so far) I have used it on WindowsMe and Windows 2000 with no problems at all. Lots of add-ons, and very easy to use. Check it out at http://www.e-sword.net/ Oh, yes! In order to use the NASB, you must pay 20 dollars to them (it is worth it!). Also, for NIV fans, too bad, it's not available. ASV 1901, yes!! Finally, (for me) it is on your hard drive, so no CD-ROM to insert. I, too, want to hear about the Logos X. Blessings in Christ Jesus, charis |

28 | Practical definition of 'forsake?' | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 33575
Dear zach†, Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus! Could you please supply me with a *practical* definition of 'forsake?' Is this an 'anti-faith?' An 'incantation?' An 'action' that is universal, or case-by-case? Are steps involved, or is there a 'one time and you are out' violation? Or is it a combination of two or more of the above? Is it possible to 'forsake' and 're-repent?' Is there something I have missed entirely? While I admit that there are abundant Scriptures that speak of the possibility, scarce are those that explain how and when grace is defeated. Blessings and peace to you in Christ Jesus, charis |

29 | *Practical* not *ethereal* | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 33733
Dear Dino Bencini, Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus! Trust, my friend, that I well know this Scripture! The problem is: 1) If Jesus will always take you back, then are we in a constant state of saved-unsaved-saved-unsaved...etc.? 1a) If so, is the outcome sure that in the end we are saved? or, 1b) Are we unsure of our status? i.e. Are we saved only if we are in God's good grace(s) at the moment of our death? 1c) Doesn't God know when we will die? i.e. If God doesn't know if we are saved or not, it seems to deny any form of the words 'chosen,' 'elect,' or 'known' by God, except in a general sense. As one that believes in a personal God, I find this very disconcerting! 2) I was asking for a *practical* definition, not an *ethereal* one. The doctrine of a believer committing an 'unforgiveable sin' depends upon the two phrases 'blaspheme (sometimes 'grieve') the Holy Spirit' and 'deny Christ.' That these two concepts are in the Bible I cannot deny! However, if we are to preach this doctrine, the burden of explaining what this means falls upon us. It cannot be a vague thing! Also, if you make these sins *easy* to commit, then you send to hell some that God has counted as in heaven. My examples are Peter and David. (though there are many more!) In the Old Testament and the New, God's people have sinned terribly and been forgiven, Jesus was denied, and the Holy Spirit grieved. But God, in His great mercy saved even those! It is this same mercy that I lean upon! How about you? Or is it now your effort and clean life that will now get you into heaven? In conclusion, I say that I am not against your claim of 'possible unforgiveable sin' as a theory and a dire warning. But if you bandy this theory 'loosely' to the effect of eroding the faith of those that God has loved, you are committing the sin of robbing God's people. Me, I prefer to encourage God's people in a positive sense. I do not offer the false security of 'God loves you whatever you do!' But I do preach that His love is effective to the salvation of those who are call His name! Can we say to God's people, "You could lose your salvation, but I'm not going to tell you how!"(?) It seems to me that if we only preach a perfect life...or else!, then we are 'faith-robbers,' not 'faith-givers.' Blessings to you in Christ Jesus, charis |

30 | Been to every church? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 39639
Dear Raven, Greetings in the name of Jesus! (you wrote) "And theres not a single one of these people that claim they have the gift of tongues keeps this verse." (end quote) Friend, have you been to every church in the world? I know of at least one church that meets the Biblical criteria for speaking in tongues and New Testament prophecy without resorting to the tomfoolery that has hardened your heart with bigotry. I would imagine that there are many more. Perhaps they are not famous (infamous?), or after numbers or money, therefore do not come to your attention. Please resist the temptation to say that if things are not done according to your method then the Bible is a fake, or we must throw it out the door. That is either mindless emotion or spiritual arrogance. (or a combination of the two :-)) Blessings and peace in Christ Jesus, charis |

31 | Which point? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 39871
Dear Raven (Roy), Greetings in the name of Jesus! Friend, which point? You have made several, but two stand out. 1) Tongues do not save, and 2) Tongues have ceased. 1) I don't think you can say that I proved your point on this one, just that we agree that tongues do not save us. :-) However, your key assertion differs from mine. You use point 2) to 'prove' point 1), while I would prefer to state that the Biblical 'lowest common denominator' for salvation is faith toward God, specifically, saved by grace through faith. 2) Perhaps my morning coffee has not yet been in my system long enough to 'inspire' my understanding, but I fail to see how I could have proved this point! :-) Your entire argument pivots on exactly one portion of Scripture (1 Corinthians 13:8-10) which is speaking of the timelessness of God's love. If this is your way of saying you don't want to talk about it any longer, I will understand. I would like to reiterate one question, though. Have you been to every church, or at least a broad enough spectrum of tongue-speaking churches to make the rather bigoted statement that all are our of order? Or did you get your opinion about them from TV, or perhaps from the opinions of others? The reason I ask is that if you don't want to be involved in such churches, then do not. If you don't want to see silly TV churches, turn it off. If you are 'perfectly' satisfied with your present church experience, great! But if you are just 'against' tongues from limited experience, or because of a bad experience, then your motives and conclusions are not Biblical. You see, my friend, I have also seen the damage done by abusers of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I have also seen a lot of 'dried up religious husks' of churches full of spite and bigotry from their zeal to deny the same gifts of the Holy Spirit. Both are terrible abuses of the abundant life that Jesus has given His people. MY point is that there are some balanced 'tongues' churches, and some balanced 'non-tongues' (NOT 'anti-tongues') churches. Which category might you fall into? I pray that you don't prove MY point! :-) Blessings and peace in Christ Jesus, charis |

32 | Too much grace? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 43297
Dear Scribe, Greetings in Jesus' name! Friend, I have a problem with your studious stance. At what point can we maintain the grace of God? We can never know the heart of man, that is God's soveriegn territory. Neither can we fathom the depths of God's grace. This too, is His alone to know. You seem to want to 'identify' porno addiction as an 'unforgivable sin.' Why not 'anger addiction' or 'untruth addiction?' How about 'self-righteousness addiction' or 'human-knowledge addiction?' Finally, what about 'speaking-for-God addiction?' I have witnessed these sins, perhaps even experienced them. I pray that He is still my Savior, full of grace! Heresy to preach too much grace? Hmmm. Imbalance, maybe; irresponsible, surely! But heresy? Hardly. Peace and grace to you, my fellow forumer. In Christ Jesus, charis |

33 | To wine, or not to wine? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 69401
Dear Ed, Greetings in the name of Jesus! Well, the Lord said the first shall be last, and the last shall be first! :-) (I'm pretty certain it won't be the last!) My brother, please understand that this post is not 'aimed' at you personally. Because we were discussing this issue together, I just decide to re-start it here. It seems this thread has been resurrected, so I would like to make a further comment... The original question asked if Jesus made a mistake by turning water into wine. This evolved into a discussion as to what the word wine meant, i.e. was alcoholic content a necessary part of the meaning. Up to this point things were fine, and most agreed that the word wine itself did not 'necessarily' mean alcoholic. Then a schism occured between those that 'a little wine' was acceptable behavior, and those that either claimed alcohol in any amount is forbidden, or that 'admitting' alcohol consumption was unacceptable behavior, akin to 'promoting' intoxicants. So, without saying whether I drink or not, I simply say that careful exegesis of the Biblical account suggests that Jesus may well have made wine with some alcoholic content. It would follow that He also consumed wine with some alcoholic content. He could not have become drunk without breaking the Biblical commandment against drunkenness (Ephesians 5:18). The alternative is to declare that every reference of wine where Jesus was involved was totally non-alcoholic wine, and every instance of wine relating to drunkenness (as well as 'merry' and 'happy') meant alcoholic wine. I don't think that objective exegesis of Scripture could support this theory. Therefore, if we say that Jesus drank, made, or served wine with any alcoholic content at all, we must conclude that the consumption of alcoholic wine is acceptable behavior, as long as it is in temperance and never to the point of drunkenness or addiction. Please notice that I am very careful to say 'wine.' I do NOT see that Jesus ever drank or accepted 'strong drink.' The Bible (and common sense!) tells me that consuming more potent beverages is dangerous. The same common sense would apply to illicit drugs. The next argument cited is 'causing a brother to stumble.' There are so many things in this modern world, not spoken of in Scripture, that could be construed as 'stumble-inducung.' I drive a car. Some good folk think this is sin. I drive a motorcycle. Some consider this delinquency. I wear glasses. Some say I lack faith. I use a computer connected to the internet. To many, this is a step away from hell. I am 20 pounds overweight. Irresponsible gluttony. I have a Seiko. A Timex will do the job. I drove to church the other morning in the snow to clear the walk out front. I could have had an accident. I ate raw fish. (Yum!) I could get food poisoning! I gave my dog a bone. She could have choked to death. Many of the above actions are 'potentially' dangerous. Many are 'unacceptable behavior' to certain individuals. Many of these actions could hypothetically influence others to sin. I find it hard to please everyone, but sense by my testimony that I please God. The final point I will make is the 'example' issue. "I know a guy..." "So many have become..." Misapplication of statistics is an age-old ploy to sway listeners from the truth. Many Christian men have consumed wine for 2,000 years without becoming addicts, or causing those around them to fall to hell. I don't have any numbers, but I suspect it is the overwhelming majority. Friend (and friends), my two cents! (payable in Yen) I remain unconvinced that we are forbidden to drink any wine, and ask for clear Biblical reference to sway my opinion. Kurisumasu Omedetou! (Merry Christmas!) Blessings and peace in Christ Jesus, charis |

35 | A pastor who is there? | NT general Archive 1 | charis | 1112
I like this answer, bjanko! If I may ask, do you mean that the minister (pastor) is actually around, and aware of all the individuals in his flock? I ask your clarification, because I have heard the argument that the pastor of a church of (for the sake of discussion) 2,000 souls, who has a paid ministerial staff of 20, and 40 lay-ministers, who is either out of town or has 'days off' 200 days a year, is busy building a 'network' and writing 'feel-good' books, and, though very good at remembering names, has no idea who you are (all this is hypothetical, you understand), is shepherding his flock. I find this to be contrary to the Bible. Yet, many aspire to this kind of situation, both shepherds and sheep! God bless you in Christ Jesus.
36 | Who are "we?" | NT general Archive 1 | charis | 4956
Sir, First, as said before, it is Arminian, not Armenian. Second, I am wondering why you use "We" in the beginning of the second paragraph. This denotes a plural entity seperate from the 'two schools of thought.' Who are "we?" Could it be The Sant Nirankari Mission? If so, I have read your statement of faith, and Jesus is not mentioned, but 'one Formless God.' charis |

Dear GloriaLynn, Greetings in Jesus' name! What boggles the mind even more is to think about the line that we cross that takes away our salvation! After all, I have never met a sinless person. Which sin is 'unforgiveable?' 491? In Christ Jesus, charis |

39 | Accountable for every commandment? | NT general Archive 1 | charis | 66387
Dear inmyheart, Greetings in the name of Jesus! As you probably know, I think that every believer should be baptized. I am curious, if baptism is commanded by God, therefore a requirement for salvation, how many other commandments must we obey in order to be saved? Trust me, I am not being facetious. The New Testament contains many, many commandments. If we say we are accountable to every one of these commandments, I assure you that not one person is saved! We are commanded to sin no more! We are commanded to be perfect! We are commanded to be humble! We are commanded to love our brother as ourselves! I have yet to meet a Christian that obeys every commandment of the Lord. So... I suggest that maybe "strongly recommend for our own good, for our sanctification, and in order to please God and earn the praise of our Master, 'Well done!'" as a more realistic rendering of the term. Perhaps we could shorten it to "command," and take away the connotation of "or else you are not saved." Just a thought... In Christ Jesus, charis |
