21 | What was the "discharge" Bible? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 9314
This is interesting, TheCross. Matching the question, "What was the discharge Bible?" with your brief answer, "The first KJB they left out seven books of the Old Testament" leads to the conclusion that you are defining for the questioner what the discharge Bible is (or was). Is this it? If we're on the same page thus far, do you know why the discharge Bible was so called? It seems like such an odd name for a Bible. This is my very first exposure to the term...... You use the initials KJB -- meaning the Authorized or King James Verson (KJV)? You say in the first KJB -- the 1611 version? -- they left out seven Old Testament books. Do you have knowledge, TheCross, of (1) why they were left out -- whether by accident or design? and (2) which books were omitted. Were they books of the Jewish canon (known by Catholics as protocanonical) or of the Apocrypha (Catholic term is deuterocanonical). Of course, the Protestant Apocrypha consists of some 15 Old Testament books, which makes the number seven you mention not quite cover them..... So, if you have some fill-in information that may cover some of these little questions I've posed, please grace the forum with more facts on this rather interesting item. And. if you will, please footnote your sources. --Hank

What are some of the key differences between conservative and liberal beliefs and practices? Are these tags -- conservative and liberal -- really accurate, fair, meaningful and objective? --Hank
23 | Literal or Paraphrase Translation? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 10209
Please discuss what advantages there may be in each: a "literally accurate" translation and an "equivalent" translation which uses a certain amount of paraphrase. Is one more reliable than the other? --Hank

27 | How long since Adam and Eve? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 11212

28 | Jesus At God's Right Hand? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 20836

29 | Wrong to Wear a Cross Necklace? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 21615
CDBJ, I'm puzzled about why you asked Tray's object in wearing a necklace with a cross on it instead of answering Tray's question. Have I missed something here -- may there be perhaps sinister reasons for wearing a cross? This is neither to ridicule or accuse, but I'm keenly curious and want to learn. --Hank
30 | The River of No Return? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 21673
The Jewish religious sects of Jesus' time (Pharisees, Sadducees, etc.) frequently challenged Jesus' authority and asked Him trick questions in an effort to trip Him up. They were, most of them, too firmly fixed in their own tradition be able to give credence to any other view but their own, including Jesus' view........ Questions: Is denominational Christianity today somewhat analogous to the Jewish sects of Jesus' time? Is this denominational bias reflected here on the forum? Can unity be restored, or have we drifted down the river of no return? --Hank

32 | Vanagon: An inquiry | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 31352
Vanagon, you have posted six questions at virtually the same time which seem to have a common denominator. Perhaps it would be of help to this forum in attempting to deal with your questions if you would divulge whether they come from the perspective of a believer or a skeptic. --Hank
33 | TNIV: How Will It Affect Us? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 33329
The announcment of the forthcoming publication of Today's New International Version (TNIV) is creating quite a controversy among Christians, especially evangelicals. Do you feel that this will have any effect on the Bible buying public in the way they may view new translations in general? Will it lead to a trend away from "dynamic equivalent" and paraphrased versons and toward conservative and literally accurate versions? Will it cast doubt upon the motives and integrity of translation committees and Bible publishers? --Hank

35 | How Should I Respond? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 35699
A friend of mine recently sent me an e-mail asking for scriptural support to the following: " 'Twas brillig and the blamfamings did frumiously outgrabe." I think he was pulling my leg. Is anyone familiar with this statement? How should I respond to it? --Hank
36 | Papal Authority Optional for RCC? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 48332
Brian, what happens to you if, as a communicant in the Roman Catholic Church, you refuse to accept papal leadership and authority? [You did say in your post that you were not obligated to accept the leadership of the pope.] --Hank
37 | Can We Put God in the Dock? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 65333
Here is a statement from Post No. 65304: "God is now obligated." Can anyone justfy this statement by citing Scripture? Wherein does Scripture teach that we sinful human beings have the authority, the power, or the right to put God in the dock, to place, by any act of our will, the sovereign Lord under obligation of any kind? --Hank
38 | Can You Answer All Ten? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 80120
What should I call this? Perhaps, "Things I've always wanted to know but was afraid to ask." Having spent a couple of years on this forum, I've seen enough to know that just about every question under the sun has been asked at one time or another, thus giving me courage to ask a few myself.... 1. Does a person have to be saved to be baptized?.... 2. Who was the husband of Cain's wife?.... 3. Were the dinosaurs one of the lost tribes of Israel?..... 4. Should a person keep his salvation in a safe deposit box to keep from losing it?..... 5. Is it wrong to masticate?..... 6. If Jesus' brothers were really cousins, then doesn't that make Jacob and Esau twin cousins instead of twin brothers?..... 7. Is it o.k. to take a sun-bath on the sab-bath? 8. Does pre-destination mean that you arrive somewhere before you start?..... 9. In the United States, congressmen are elected but federal court judges are appointed. Does this mean that judges are not the elect but the congress is?..... 10. Does sea water have the same power to save as fresh water has?.... Well, I hope you enjoyed the questions, and I'm almost certain to enjoy your answers. To new users, browsers, lurkers, curiosity seekers and others of various stripes, be it known that these are what should be thought of as tongue-in-cheek questions. But even though they be such, they may serve you as a foretaste of what to expect on this forum. The only salient difference between my questions and legions of others that appear on this forum's menu with clockwork regularity is that mine are admittedly served to you in jest while others of no greater sense are not. --Hank
39 | Should Christians Pooh-Pooh Proof? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 81841
Statement observed on this forum: "We do not have to prove the existence of Jesus. We are called to be witnesses." The question is, How can one effectively witness about that of which he has absolutely no proof, can offer nothing substantive upon which he bases his faith, and dismisses as superfluous and immaterial the need to "prove all things; hold fast that which is good [1 Thess.5:21]? What was John's purpose in writing the fourth Gospel, if not that his words were "written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through His name" [John 20:31]? --Hank
40 | Stokey or Stokeyhk? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 86700
