21 | The Sovereignty of God | Ps 103:19 | Hank | 124597
"You don't hear much preaching these days," said David Jeremiah in a sermon broadcast on radio this afternoon, "on the sovereignty of God." He told of his amazement to find in Charles Haddon Spurgeon's sermons such a large number of sermons on God's absolute sovereignty. Dr. Jeremiah offered a large list of reasons why he believed that the subject of the sovereignty of God has grown so unpopular in the world today, even in the pulpits and pews of Christian churches. Without writing a full report on Dr. Jeremiah's sermon, I'll ask the Forum: Is it important to teach and preach and meditate upon the sovereignty of God? Why? And why do you think it has become so unpopular a subject? (Has humanism crept into the thinking of Christians? And how would this affect their thinking about the sovereignty of God?) Lastly, what does the Bible say about God's sovereignty? --Hank
22 | Miss JW, Who Is Jesus? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 121455
MissJW [Jehovah's Witness]: What do you consider the proper translation of John 1:1? Who is Jesus -- is He God or a god? Do you confess to the full deity of Christ? Is He fully a member of the Trinity -- or do you deny the biblical doctrine of the Trinity? --Hank
23 | Purpose of Prayer? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 121165
What does the Bible say about the purpose of prayer? --Hank
24 | A man of God? | NT general Archive 1 | Hank | 121168
What does it mean to be a man of God? The term is fairly common in the Old Testament but rare in the New Testament. Please answer the question by giving Bible examples and Bible definitions, not by saying something that begins, "I believe the term means...." --Hank
25 | To Post or Not to Post? | 2 Tim 2:15 | Hank | 119219
As pertaining to posting on this Forum, there are at least four things a user can do in regard to a passage of Scripture which he does not understand: [1] Ask others for help in exegeting its meaning. [2] Post an uninformed, speculative, private interpretation of its meaning. [3] Forget about the scriptural passage altogether and post his opinion based on thin air. [4] Study the passage diligently and thoroughly in private and avoid posting anything about it until he is reasonably sure he knows what he is talking about. There may be other approaches into addition to these four. Does anyone care to comment on this post? --Hank
26 | How Do You Stay on Track? | Ps 23:3 | Hank | 116922
The NASB translators' marginal note on the phrase in Psalm 23:3 "He guides me in the PATHS of righteousness" is "lit. TRACKS." I like the imagery that these words evoke in my mind. God guides me in the tracks of righteousness..... I've always liked trains. When I was a small boy I used to take short (18-mile) train trips with my parents from our home in a rural area of north Georgia to the "big city" of Chattanooga, Tennessee. In recent years I've traveled by Amtrak on several occasions from my home in Arkansas to both the east and west coasts of our country. The trips have been pleasant and safe, because the trains I've ridden have stayed steadily on track. But not all of them do! When trains jump track, they make headlines and not good-news headlines either. In many cases injury and death ensue in the wake of a train wreck. But isn't it a comforting thought that God guides His children in the tracks of righteousness. He keeps them safe and on track in a spiritual sense. What are some other Bible passages that give YOU comfort and assurance in the providence of God in keeping your life "on track"? --Hank
27 | ALL Scripture Inspired by God? | OT general | Hank | 116026
Ischus: In your post #116014 in response to EdB, in referring to the matter of Scripture's inspiration, you use the term "middle ground." What do you mean by it? ..... Suppose we put the cards on the table, cut to the chase, and consider whether the following statement is absolutely true: "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." [2 Timothy 3:16,17]. Does this statement appear to you to take an either/or approach, i.e., one either believes it or he does not believe it? Or does it, in your opinion, leave open a "middle ground" in which one can "philosophize" about whether some parts of Scripture are inspired and others not? I'm going to ask you a direct question, ischus. It is one that can be answered simply by a yes or a no. Do you fully believe and accept these six words as being absolutely true: "ALL Scripture is inspired by God"? As I say, the question can be answered by a simple yes or no. It doesn't require a "Yes, but..." or a "No, because..." So please answer this question. Let's stop all the double talk, let's cut out all the mumbo jumbo, let's cease beating around the bush on this crucial issue. It's brass tacks time, ischus. Please answer the question. --Hank
28 | Adam: Chief Sinner? | 1 Pet 3:19 | Hank | 115512
bstudent: Am I being too presumptuous to think that surely you have a scriptural basis for your assessment that Adam exceeded all others in the gravity of his sin and too optimistic to hope that you will make the Forum privy to your exegesis of this Scripture? --Hank
29 | John Pilgrim: A question of deja vu | 1 Cor 12:10 | Hank | 115184
John Pilgrim: I need your help. I seem to be having flashbacks. It's them troublesome deja vu's all over again, as Yogi Berra used to say. But you can help me, I'm sure, by answering a simple question. Are you, who is posting now as John Pilgrim, the former John Reformed? --Hank
30 | Questions on Tongues | 1 Corinthians | Hank | 114353
JLY: Reference: Post 114310. ..... What is the meaning of "tongues" as it is used in Acts 2:4? What is the meaning of "tongues" as you use it to describe the regular Sunday activity that takes place at the service you attend? Do they differ? If they do, how do they differ and why do they differ? You mention that every Sunday God talks to your congregation through a person's speaking in tongues. There is a passage in Scripture, Hebrews 1:2, which says this: "In these last days (God) has spoken to us in His Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom He made the world." If you will, please exegete this verse and offer us some means of comparing it with your congregation's practice of seeking God's message through a tongue-speaking member of the congregation. You speak of there being an interpretaton of these tongue-speaking episodes. Who is the interpreter, what are his credentials, and exactly how and by what (or whose) authority does he render his interpretations? These are posted as objective questions and as such seek objective, i.e., scripturally based and scripturally sound, answers. --Hank
31 | StudyBibleForum or MyOpinionForum? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Hank | 113866
The name of this web site is StudyBibleForum.com and its sponsors, the Lockman Foundation, have laid down clear guidelines for users. The first item listed for compliance to its guidelines , to which every poster agrees with every post he makes, reads as follows: "This post is biblically based and whenever possible, I have included Bible references to support it." ...... But have you noticed how frequently this guideline is agreed to but not followed at all? How many times have you seen posts that have absolutely no biblical references, but instead are riddled with a generous number of expressions such as "I think," "I believe," -- without giving the slightest biblical reference that supports the "I thinks" and "I believes." Personally, I don't read very much of the output from users who express opinions without scriptural back-up. Why should I, why should you, waste your time reading raw opinions by users when you haven't the vaguest notion of what their credentials are? You don't really know whether you're reading an informed opinion or the opinion of an air head. Seldom on this Forum is a user called into account for entering post after post of sheer opinion unsupported by any scriptural references, yet this practice is a clear violation of Forum rules and constitutes abuse. When another Forum user is unfairly attacked, all rise to his defense. But when the Bible is ignored and replaced by opinion, few rise to the Bible's defense. What kind of selective double standard are we following on this Forum? Do you consider it a problem? Does it concern you? What do you propose to do about it? The obvious place to begin is by cleaning up our own act first -- to be heavy on Scriptural references and light on purely personal opinion and speculation. And each of us can crack down hard on the abusers, on those who day after day use this Forum as a soap-box for their opinions and ignore its purpose, which is Bible study. We should warn recalcitrant offenders on-line first and, should they choose to ignore us, we should file a abuse reports with the Lockman Foundation. Have you noticed that the most outrageous and unbiblical opinions seem to get the most attention on this Forum? So often when a user posts a thoroughly biblical response, it attracts little attention, if any at all. Do we have have a case of itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3) instead of a thirst for God's word (2 Timothy 2:15)? --Hank
32 | Smile and say Jeez? | Ex 13:21 | Hank | 111441
Punkledo, your post contains the interjection "JEEZE." It has two flaws. One, it is misspelled. The expression is "jeez." Two, "jeez" is an alteration of the word "Jesus" -- hardly a fit interjection to use on a Study Bible Forum, or for a Christian to use anywhere else, wouldn't you agree? --Hank
33 | Rowdy's Right Reason? | John 3:5 | Hank | 111301
Rowdy, in Post # 111289 you make the following statement: "...I think it's best to go with the more safe option and be baptized for the right reason, rather than face Judgment Day without it." ..... I have two questions. What is the "more safe" option and how and why is it an option? And what does being "baptized for the right reason" mean? ...... By the way, you have not yet responded to my questions to you in Post #111225. I await your responses to this post and to that one. Cordially and with warm wishes, --Hank
34 | What's God's "Plan of Salvation"? | John 3:5 | Hank | 110749
Mr and Mrs Rowdy write: "It's the WHOLE of God's plan of salvation that transforms sinners to God's children in His kingdom." So then, what (or who) is this "WHOLE of God's plan of salvation" -- is it Christ and His finished work on the cross alone, or is it Christ PLUS something else, baptism for instance? Another way of putting the question is to ask, Is the statement, "salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone" lacking in some way, and if it is, what is lacking? And by what means are sinners transformed into God's children? -Hank
35 | Christian Activism? | Matt 5:13 | Hank | 109724
The chairman and board members of the FCC have recently reversed their decision to allow the 'f' word to be used on the nation's airways. Massive protests by Christian men and women are in no small measure responsible for this 180 degree turnaround by the FCC. My question is, do you think it is Christians' responsibility to be activists and to do whatever they can to oppose sin publicly and vigorously by all legal and non-violent means available? [Where I stand: I enthusiastically applaud the action that put pressure on the FCC which effected a recission of their former ruling. I played a small role in it through the American Family Association (AFA)] --Hank
36 | Tara: Theological Quagmire? | OT general | Hank | 107306
Tara 1: Referencing your post # 107238: Is it your sense then that God created Christ? Do you envisage Christ as "a god" a la John 1:1, New World Translation? If Christ is, as you say, "second in all the universe" and is not Jehovah, is Christ deity? How can you fit Christ into such a theology without admitting to a doctrine of polytheism? Please try to explain your theology. I'm thoroughly confused. Are you Jehovah's Witness or do you merely speak from their viewpoint on certain issues? --Hank
37 | Two Christmases? | Is 9:6 | Hank | 106361
Tonight I heard a song on the radio. The lyrics: "Let's all give thanks to the Lord above, 'cause Santa Claus is coming tonight." ...... Tonight I read in Isaiah 9:6: "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." ..... There are obviously two Christmases: the Christmas the world celebrates and the Christmas Christians celebrate. Are they compatible? Why or why not? --Hank
38 | Regard the Suicide Question... | Ex 20:13 | Hank | 105678
WHEELS: Upon what scriptural teaching, if any, do you base your opinion, if you'd care to tell the Forum? --Hank
39 | When Is Enough Enough? | Is 6:5 | Hank | 103754
Dear Friends, Brothers and Sisters of the Forum: This morning I received a distrubing e-mail message from American Family Association. The Federal Communications Commission has aproved the use of the "F" word by all TV shows and radio programs, ANYTIME DAY OR NIGHT. When is enough enough, and what can Christians do about it? While we still have the liberty to do so, we can protest vigorously to the FCC and to our senators and representatives. We can protest to the TV and radio stations that broadcast verbal pornography. We can boycott sponsors who pay the media for broadcasting filth. We can refuse to watch TV or listen to radio programs that broadcast vile language, explicit sex, and raw violence. And we can pray that God will bring this nation to repentence and a moral and spiritual awakening. But we must not, we simply cannot afford to, sit back and let the dark forces of evil invade the sanctity of our Christian homes and dump their garbage in our minds and in the minds of our children and grand-children. I submit that for today at least our time would be better spent in prayer and peaceful protest than in posting our opinions of Scripture on the Forum. Yours in Christ Jesus, --Hank
40 | On What Should the Sinner Focus? | Rom 1:16 | Hank | 103370
On what should the sinner focus -- the Cross or a baptismal pool? Which saves -- the precious blood of Christ shed on the Cross or a pool of water? What is the core message of the gospel of Christ -- Jesus saves or water saves? What must one do to be saved -- believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, or must he DO something himself, such as getting himself baptized? --Hank
