121 | What makes Christianity different | John 14:6 | Robert Nicholson | 55131
Johnney: Let me put my convictions in perspective. 1. God has not cast away his people Israel However, all the promises hinge on the coming Messiah, Christ himself. In other words whether we be Jew or Gentile our only path to God is through Christ alone. In a future day Israel will cry these wondrous words of Isaiah 53 which include "He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquites, the chastisement of our peace was laid upon him and with his strips we are healed" In the old testament the many shadows and pictures which were given to Israel and the covenants which God gave them; each of these are fulfilled in Christ. There is no other way to be acceptable to God. We and they are accepted in the beloved. If you were to break down each of the covenants which God has given Israel, we would find that Israel failed in each one usually by disobedience. Think of the giving of the law, before Moses could get down to the camp the people were worshipping the golden calf. Gods promises are given and rely on obedience. God has never offered a universal salavation to the world. What I mean by this is that even thought the precious shed blood of the saviour has the power to forgive every sin ever committed; it is only as those who would have this forgiveness and are willing to completely bow to God and accept by faith the provision which he has provided in Christ. Think of the old testament saints such as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. we read in Hebrews that they saw the "promise afar off" In the types and picutures which God has given them they could only understand to a point what God was trying to tell them. And yet by faith they accepted what God had told them and as they looked forward to the coming Christ; by faith God imputed to them righteousness. Their acceptance was not in what they had done, but rather in what they had done with the message of God regarding the coming redeemer. The joyful part of the news is that after the cross all nations, all races, all religions have the opportunity to know God in a personal intimate way through Christ. By faith we look backward to Calvary and release that this is the one whom God promised and this is the one who finished the work God gave him to do. Jesus Christ in his sacrifice made a way whereby a Holy and Righteous God could justly forgive sins for people of all ages. I would agree with New Creature in that there is no other way to God. Christ is the one mediator between God and man. God is totally satisfied in Christ and offers him as our redeemer, our friend, our saviour, our substitute, our Lord and ours for all eternity. If we miss Christ we have missed everthing. May we learn to appreciate the worth and work of Christ. Robert |

Johnny: My answer to the question "Are the eternal promises of God to Israel broken?" No, God will not go back on his word. However, I believe that God will fulfil his promises in his own time. In Romans 11 V. 1-6 Paul addresses this question "Hath God cast away his people? God forbid..." V.1 "For God hath no cast away his people whom he foreknew..." One of the greatest promises was given to Abraham is found in Genesis 12:1-3 Not only does these promises apply to Israel, but to all the families of the earth, for he said "in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed" V. 3. However, in order for Israel or anyone for that matter to come into blessing, there must be obedience by faith. Those who left Eygpt did not come into the good of the promise of what was theirs because of disobedience and unbelief. God is faithful and he will honor his word. God bless you Robert |

Johnny: You asked "What about Israel? I hope you don't mind me butting in. In John 1: 11-12 "He (Jesus) came unto his own and his own received him not. But as man as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them which believe on his name" In other words when Jesus Christ came into the world he came to save sinners of all race and nation. There have been thousands of Israelites who have trusted Christ as saviour and Lord beginning with the apostles who spread the gospel to their own people first, before the message was spread to the Gentile nations. Jesus Christ is the fulfilment of the promise of a redeemer to all people. In Romans 3:23 we find that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The good news is that Christ died for all. And today regardless of our background we can be brought nigh to God through faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Israel is in a privileged position, for first they were given the prophecies regarding the coming redeemer. There were some at his birth who recognized him, others during his life and many after his death and resurrection. However, as we experience today, it is the few who are willing to acknowledge their need of him and to acknowledge that he has met their need completely. God bless Robert |

Norrie It is interesting according to Chronology in the Bible that Noah lived 350 years after the flood and died 2 years before Abraham was born. However, Shem, Noah's son lived 502 years after the flood. He knows Abraham for 150 years and Isaac for 50 years. The geneology of Jesus is traced back to King David through Joseph the husband of Mary his mother. In Matthew 1 we see the Lord Jesus as King, thus we are given the genealogy of a King. In Luke 3:23 we are given the genealogy of Jesus traced from Mary his mother back to Adam. Luke portrays the humanity of Christ as the Son of Man. At this moment I cannot give you much information on the 10 Lost Tribes except we know their names and that God has plans for them in a future day. Revelation 7: 4-8 The reason we have information today on ancient peoples is that in their times genealogy was very important. Thus, today we can find much in the Bible along with other ancient writings which is constantly being confirmed by Archaeology. For example, it is only in recent years that a dig a Haran revealed information on Terah Abraham's father thus confirming the Bible which tells us Abraham moved from Ur to Haran. I would agree with you that the Anglo Saxon people of England have not descended from the lost tribes and are in fact a Gentile nation. Regarding Joseph and Mary having other children: There is not much written on this and I do not know of any genealogy on them. The important thing to remember is that in Genesis 3:15 after humans became sinners by disobedience, God promised them a redeemer who would come via the seed of the woman. As we look at the genealogy of Mary we see the grace of God as down through the ages he chooses those who would bring this promise to fulfilment. We thank God that "when the fulness of time was come, God sent forth his son..."(Galations 4:4) God bless Robert |

Grace and Truth: It is not my intention to cause contention, but I would like to respond to your answer. I believe that we must "rightly divide the word of Truth" The Lord Jesus taught clearly that there are those who have life and those who have not live. We are either in one group or the other. The only foundation upon which we can build is the Lord Jesus Christ who is referred to as " an anchor to the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil" Heb. 6:19 The Lord Jesus taught that those who are on the rock are safe Matt. 7:25 Throughout the book of Matthew the Lord is dealing with the reality of profession. In Matt. 7: 13-14 we have two ways, one leading to life and the other to destruction. In v.15-20 we have two types of prophets which can be tested by their fruits. In V 21-23 Two types of professors, those who are real and those who are false. I believe that in our world today there are thousands who profess to be Christian and have never knew Christ. They have done things in his name along with many christian type works and yet they have never been born again. The Lord is telling us that the day will come when there false profession will be exposed. In v24-29 the Lord Jesus points out that there are two foundations upon which one can build. "Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken to a wise man, which built his house upon the rock" What does it mean to hear his sayings? In John 5;24 Jesus explains this "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life. This verse tells us that once we place faith in the finished work of Christ that we have a present possession "everlasting life" and we no longer stand in a place of condemnation. Even more wonderful we have passed from death (spiritual) unto life. In Matt. 25 1-13 is speaking again of one group of 10 virgins who profess to be waiting for the coming of the bridgegroom. They all slumbered and slept and to the human eye were identifical. However, the Lord tells us the 10 are divided into two groups, those with oil in their lamps and those without oil in their lamps. Oil in the scripture is symbolic of the Spirit of God. We find that the time of realty is realized at the moment the call came. There were those with light and those in darkness and those with light could not help those in darkness. Those that were ready went in with the bridegroom to the marriage and the door was shut. The others who professed to be waiting for the bridegroom came knocking only to hear the word "I know you not" Do you not think we have an important lesson here? That we must be ready, we must know Christ if we expect to be taken to him when he comes? The scriptures tell us "Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." Romans 8:9 Regarding overcomers: We can never become overcomers with our own strength, as Paul said, "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not." Romans 7:18 In other words even though we desire to please God after we are saved, we cannot do it on our own. In fact we are given the secret "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Phil. 4:13 This most certainly ties in with the verses I have already quoted from Romans 8 especially verse 37 "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us." In 1 John 4:4 we read "Ye are of God, little children and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" Overcomers are those who have come over to Christ by faith who indwells us with his Holy Spirit and gives us the power to be overcomers in him. In Revelation 22:19 we have a warning with dire consequences. A person who knows Christ and is indwelt by his Spirit will never despise the word of God or try to take away from anything God has said. I agree that Mark 16, 9-20 is inspired and have never thought otherwise. In verse 16 the Lord Jesus speaks words similar to John 5:24, that there are two groups of people: He that believeth and he that believeth not. He that believeth and is baptised: please note that believeth comes first, then baptism. We know from other scriptures that upon believing a soul is born from above and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. We also know from other scriptures that upon receiving eternal life that Christians in obedience to the words of Christ were baptised outwardly proclaiming what has happen within. The mark of a Christian is "my sheep hear my voice and they follow me" Robert |

129 | well then let iron sharpen iron | Matt 24:14 | Robert Nicholson | 54412
Justme In Acts 1 we read about the Lord Jesus taken up into heaven. His loved ones were wondering when he would set up his kingdom. The risen Christ made it clear to them that this time was in his father's care. No matter how much we try to speculate on various world events we will never know until the promise given to his disciples is fulfilled. Think of them as they stared upward as their is taken up and are given this message "Ye men of Galilee why stand gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus which is taken up from your into heaven, shall come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven" Acts 1:11 I believe all who belong to Christ look forward to that day when he will come. However, we may suffer much before that time will come. In the meanwhile we are to watch expectantly for him as we labor for him. As a father and grandfather it is my desire that loved ones will come to Christ will there is still opportunity. The most tragic thing is for a person who is in a place of opportunity to miss Christ. God bless you Robert |

Greetings Grace and Truth: I do not know much about angels who kept not their first estate. They are in a different sphere than humans. That is the amazing thing about God's grace is that he choose to reveal himself to fallen man through Christ. Christ died for our sins and because of his work and worth we can rejoice that our sins are forgiven. Rev. 2:10 is dealing with faithfulness as a Christain and subsequent reward, not our security in him. I love these words: "Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:34 -39 Peace in his name Robert |

131 | Eternal Security is it possible? | 2 Tim 1:12 | Robert Nicholson | 54337
Good morning New Creature: I apologize for taking so long to respond. I believe that in Romans 11 we have a comparision of the workings of God with Israel nationally and the Gentile nations. In v.25 we read that"...blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in" I think that in Romans 11 we more of a national view rather than a view in the individual Christian. In v. 13 He is speaking to the Gentiles and explaining this mystery that the Gentiles who are likened to the wild olive tree are being grafted in to the good olive tree. Conversely, because of unbelief some of the natural branches have been broken off. The warning is that even though they (the Gentiles) have been grafted in, they should not boast of this blessing. The warning is that God could turn away from the Gentile nations and in fact he will turn back to Israel in his own time. In verse 22 the words "if thou continue in his goodness" I believe that the if is not questioning there security in Christ, but is the if of argument meaning "since" you continue in his goodness. I do not believe that the scriptures contradict themselves or that God will go back on his word. When he gives us the gift of eternal life through Christ, he will not take it back. It has been paid for with the precious blood of Christ and is not dependent on my subsequent behavior after I have been saved. The sign that we have divine life within is that "we follow him" and out of love and devotion to him our lives should in some measure honor him. I realize that some believe that we can we saved and lost, however, I rest upon the promises of Christ, one being "they shall never perish. Peace in our Saviour's name Robert |

New Creature: I agree that there are many counterfiet Christians. In the last days there will be a professing Christian church without Christ who will be willing to accept the Anti-Christ. The subtilites of this coming monster will be such that they will think he is who he claims to be. They will believe his lie and be damned with him forever. That is why we must keep to the simplicity which is in Christ. To proclaim his saving love and power. And to stand against those who would try to make him less than what he his. He is altogether lovely, he is the fairest of ten thousand to my soul! The important thing to remember that God is very real and that Satan has tried to counterfeit him at every stage. God will win in the end. We praise his precious and Holy name forever! Robert |

Prayon I would go further to say that baptisum or the ritual thereof will not cover one sin. If a person is immersed in the waters of baptism without faith in Christ, they simply go into the water dry and come up wet. As far as God is concerned there is no forgiveness apart from the precious blood of Christ. Robert |

Grace and Truth: I agree that the Lord will withdraw if people contiually reject him. You will notice that in the last church Laodica Rev. 3:14- that the Lord is outside the professing church altogether. In v. 20 he appeals to individuals "Behold I stand at the door and knock; and any man hear my voice and open the door I will come in to him, and sup with him and he with me" This is certainly a sad time for the church who has choosen rest on their own riches and ignore Christ altogether. I enjoyed you quote. There is a great difference between profession and possession. God wants our individual hearts and love, afterall it is a personal relationship we have in him. God bless you Robert |

138 | "need" for baptiam | Bible general Archive 1 | Robert Nicholson | 51014
To All: We should not take a few scripture verses in isolation and build a doctrine. In fact Peter tells us "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation." (1 Peter 1:20) In other words we must consider the interpretation of a verse in the context of the chapter, in the context of the book, in the context of the testament and in the context of the whole word of God. What does God teach us about the remission or forgiveness of sins? a)"without shedding of blood is no remission." (Heb.9:22) From the beginning of Genesis throughout the Old Testament God has shown this principle through types and shadows that there is no forgiveness apart from the shedding of blood. All of these pictures pointed forward to the coming redeemer who would give the ultimate sacrifice for sin. These types and shadows were fulfilled in Christ. b) There is no other way to have sins forgiven. "But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God" (Heb. 10:12) Peter also reminds us "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:" (1 Peter 1:18-19) Paul reminds us in (Eph 2:8-8) "For by grace are you saved through faith ; and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God; not of works lest any one should boast" What about Peter's words in Acts 2:38? Is he teaching us that baptism is essential for the forgiveness of sins? If so is he not contradicting 1 Peter 1: 18-19? First who is he speaking to: He is preaching the first message of the gospel to Israel, many whom were eyewitness to Jesus on earth and to his death upon the cross. They were also those who were looking for the Christ or the Messiah. What is he telling them? He reminds them of the life of Christ on earth, his miracles and wonders. He tells them that it was God's plan that Christ would be crucified and slain. He shows them how Christ is the fulfilment of old testament prophecy and that he died, but more wonderful, God raised him from the dead and that "God hath made that same Jesus , whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ."V36 In other words the one you have hated, rejected and crucified is none other than the messiah whom God had promised. How did they react? Their conscience was pricked and they asked "What shall we do?" Peter continues and teaches them that guilt is not enough! Feeling sorry for your mistakes will not give you forgiveness! What was his message? a) "Repent ye"(metanohsate) is in the active imperative tense. It demands action at once! You must change your mind and your life immediately. You must see yourself as God sees you and see Christ as God sees him. The one whom you rejected you must crown as Lord and Christ of your life. If indeed they followed this teaching the moment they turned to Christ by faith and acknowledge him as Lord and Christ they were given eternal life. What next? "And be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ" Why did Peter insist that they be baptised. Were they not saved when they believed which was part of repentance? Absolutely! However, it was the command of the Jesus Christ and it was by his authority that they were baptised. Their baptism at this time was an outward expression of the inward change. They identified with Jesus Christ whom they once hated and yet now loved. The Lord Jesus made it very clear that there is a divine order to getting saved. "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" Mark 16:16 What is he saying? "He that believeth" At this point the person is forgiven the moment they rest by faith on Jesus. "And is baptised" He wants those who believe in him to be baptised. "He that believeth not" "shall be damned" nothing is said about being baptised not. Baptism would have no merit if a person who had not believed were baptised. We know that there are hundreds of verses support the theme of God's word which is redemption through Christ alone. To try and add something to the work of Christ is an insult to that precious one who paid the price in full and in doing so open the life gates to all who will enter by faith. I plead nothing more than the precious blood of Christ shed for me for eternity. I was baptised as a step of obedience to Christ with the intention of honoring him and proclaiming outwardly the change which he by his spirit had made within. May we walk worthy of him. Robert |

Goodmorning New Creature: The seven churches of Asia which are found in Rev. 2-3 represent local churches of God which existed in Asia at about 96 A.D.. Interestingly, the Spirit of God through John points out the condition of each. However, when we look closely at each church we find that each represents a time in history which at the time of the writing of Rev. was future except for the first church at Ephesus. Ephesus represents the apostolic age. The Lord says: a) "I know thy works, and thy labour and thy patience" V.2 Labor in this verse is given in the sense that they labored to the point of exhaustion. b) "thou canst bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not and hast found them liars. This church was doctrinally correct and stood guard against false teachers and exposed such as false. In v. 3 the Lord summerizes the intensity of their labor, their doctrine and faithfulness to that doctrine. Nevertheless, even though the appeared to be correct, the Lord points out this major problem in V.4 "Thou has left thy first love" An example of this can be found in the experience of Mary and Martha in Luke 10V38. Martha was a hard worker and was busy trying to make things right for the Lord. She was frustrated with her sister's seeming lack of exercise. Yet we find that the Lord points out "that Mary has choosen the better part". What was Mary doing? Sitting at the feet of the Lord Jesus and hearing his word. Martha was distracted by all of the work she thought necessary and forgot that it was important to be close to Christ and to hear his word. In Ephesus, we have those who labored intensely supposedly for God. However, it would seem that their motivation was out of duty rather than out of love. When we first come to know Christ as our Saviour, we are in our first love. Our desire is to be pleasing to him because of his love to us and ours to him. However, as time goes by there is a distinct danger of doing things out of a sense of duty rather than love. We may pride ourselves in doctinal correctness, in our ability to see error in others and in our stand for the truth, but if we are motivated by anything other than love for Christ, we labor in vain. God wants our hearts more than anything else. In V. 5 they are told to repent. Or the Lord would removed the lampstand from their presence. I believe the lampstand is the Lord's presence in their midst. At a certain point he will withdraw and leave them alone to their own organized religion. You mention "People doing what they do without the fire" This is a good way of putting it. I believe the fire speaks of our desire to please the Lord Jesus because we love him and if we are willing he will by his Spirit raise us to higher heights in himself. "You have left your first love" is a challenging searching question which we can apply to ourselves. Why do we do what we do for the Lord? In Christ Robert |

Lionstrong: I agree. Knowing that a loved one is absent from the body and present with the Lord does not remove the sense of loss and grief for those left behind. According to 1 Cor. 15 it will be not until Christ comes and we shall be changed that the saying will come to pass "death is swallowed up of victory" 1 Cor. 15:54 We read in John 11:35 "Jesus wept." He wept for those who mourned the loss of a loved one, even though he knew that he would raise Lazarus from the dead. Is it not amazing that the eternal creator and sustainer of all things: wept?
