129 | what is palm sunday all about? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 185704
Here's a start; taken from the Dictionary of Christianity in America. PALM SUNDAY Palm Sunday. The Sunday before Easter, celebrating Christ's entry into Jerusalem. A procession with palm branches down the Mount of Olives is reported at Jerusalem for this day in A.D. 383 by the pilgrim Egeria, and the custom spread slowly from there to Spain, Gaul and eventually Rome. In many Western churches this same Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, the Gospel for the day being the Passion according to Matthew, Mark or Luke in the three years of the triennial lectionary. The preliminary palm liturgy includes the account of the entry into Jerusalem from the same Gospel, and is followed by a procession with palm branches and the singing of traditional hymns. In America today the palm liturgy is sometimes celebrated ecumenically at a single location, the members of the participating congregations processing to their several churches for the more restricted celebration of Eucharist. Orthodox churches celebrate only Christ's entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, beginning the week of the Passion on Monday. BIBLIOGRAPHY. J. G. Davies, Holy Week: A Short History (1963). T.J. 134 | Does God bless a christian in sin? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 186569
Prayer Warrior, Your first question requires a strong assumption. No one truly knows if another is saved though we might speculate strongly one way or the other. The Scriptures teach that if we are truly saved and sealed by the Spirit of God we will not intentionally, willfully go on sinning (Romans chapter 6 for example). Not sure what you mean by "partakers of the blessing" but if your referring to salvation I start with referring back to my first statement here. If I'm following you, I would say your third question should be answered NO. Before they can be "still partakers" they had to have first BEEN partakers. If you are referring to salvation, and then answer that yes, they are still partakers, then no, this argument wouldn't support that salvation results from works. On the other hand, if we were to argue that they were saved but are no longer saved as a result of their sins you described, that would be an argument that salvation is a result of works. The logic follows that if there is a work I can do to "undo" my salvation, there is a work I can do to "redo" my salvation. We don't find such a teaching anywhere in Scripture. (John 10:28-29 for example). Hope this helps, Jeff |

Freedom.., I'm sorry that you have had such tragic circumstances in your life. Unfortunately though, the STUDYBIBLEFORUM is not the place to confront those terrible issues as it is not, nor are the members, equipped to provide counseling here. Please limit your participation to the study of Scripture whether asking a question or answering one. It might be helpful to go back and read the Terms of Use and About the Forum. These will help guide you in what is and what is not appropriate to post. Most certainly it is not appropriate to post first and last names of individuals with accusation (true or not). This is absolutely not a gossip forum. There are legal issues to be considered not only for yourself, but also for Lockman which hosts this forum. God bless, Jeff |

136 | Calvin or Armini | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 186696
I agree with Steve that there is no "requirement" to study Calvin, Arminius or any other specific uninspired writings. With that said, let me add that there is plenty of "reason" to study them. God has given some as teachers (see 1Corinthians)-why? Eph 4:12-15. So if the point is to be made that being alone with the Scriptures is sufficient to fulfill God's purpose for the Church, then the point is far from being on target. God has given teachers for the reason set forth in Scripture. So to attempt to down-grade or in any way insinuate that there is no benefit from learning from them is simply contrary to God's plan for the Church as revealed in Scripture. And speaking to the question of motivation, know that none will be drawn into a debate on the doctrine of election here on the Forum. If it's the debate your interested in, simply study that between the Calvinist and Arminius points of view. There is far more there by minds greater than yours and mine that further illustrates there is no need for us to take it up again here. God bless, Jeff |

137 | what is the true sabbath day by man. | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 186959
Hello grey, Welcome to the Forum :) Some say Saturday, some say Sunday. I don’t believe it matters. Here is what the Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary says in part. SABBATH Historically, Christians of this persuasion usually observe Sunday, the first day of the week, as the Christian Sabbath. They note that Christ arose on the first day of the week (Matt 28:1) and, thereafter, the New Testament church regularly worshiped on Sunday (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor 16:2; Rev 1:10). This day on which Jesus arose was called the LORD'S DAY (Rev 1:10). Here is something Jesus had to say about it. Mark 2:23 (ESV) "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Hope this helps, Jeff |

138 | 2 bothersome questions | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 187467
Hello sk..., To my knowledge there is no known record of the "custom" beyond that listed there and in parallels. Therefore, unless I am wrong, we're in agreement with the historians and bible scholars. That is, we don't know. As for the question about lawfulness of execution I have always understood that the Jews lost the power to execute after coming under the control of the Roman Empire. The law in Lev. has nothing to do with it. Having lost their sovereignty as a nation, that ruling over them (Rome) would no doubt dictate what rules and laws the people could enforce on their own discretion. My limited understanding of the Roman Empire is that only the Emperor had the "power of life and death". Any other, such as soldiers, governors, etc. (including Pilate) would have only acted by the authority of the Emperor. Maybe others can help here. I would certainly not point to the account in John 8 where the argument was being made to Christ that the adulteress should be stoned as suggesting a contradiction. First- she was not stoned (if there are other examples during the time of Roman rule where the practice of stoning to death was used by the Jews please point out). Second- the context shows us here that the Scribes and Pharisees cared nothing about the sin of this woman nor the law. Their intent was to trap and manipulate the Lord. What they found (as should we)was that the higher calling of God to love and not judge as well as forgiveness trumped both the spirit in which the scribes and Pharisees wished to use the law of Moses, and the law of Rome. Context is as important as the words we read. Without it the words have no real meaning. I appreciate your approach that if there seems to be a contradiction it is you that is "at fault" and "missing something". Good job on that. With that type of attitude you will be free to study and learn without being fooled by your own limitations. God bless, Jeff |

139 | When do you not submit to authority | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 187950
Hello nobody, your somebody. Welcome to the forum :) Acts 5:27-29 (ESV) 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, 28 saying, "We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us." 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. 140 | once saved always saved | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 188184
Eric, The question that seems obvious to me in light of Scripture is, were you once saved? 1 Cor 1:9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. ESV 1 Thess 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. ESV God bless, Jeff |
