202 | Adam and Eve or the Account of Creation? | Genesis | jlhetrick | 190682
Dear newbeliever- God bless you and welcome to the Forum. After reading your user profile it was easier for me to understand your string of questions. First, however, allow me to give a quick run-down of how the forum works. Generally speaking, it is best to ask a single question at a time. Otherwise, if you receive several responses to several questions asked over a short period of time, you will not be able to responsibly participate in so many conversations. Also, as a new believer (as your username suggests) allow me to advise you that beginning your study of God's word with a critical eye for the negative- that is looking for or focusing on apparent contradictions- is, may I say, starting off on the wrong foot. The proper approach to studying the very word of a Holy and Sovereign Creator God is to do so with a reverence and humility that can be commanded by no one or nothing else. Our God created the heavens and the earth, you and me, and everything else that exists. His very word tells us that He is Holy, and sovereign. He is blameless; that is, He cannot make a mistake. When we start there we are no longer concerned about there being contradictions in the bible because we know that that is an impossibility. So when you come across something that appears to be a contradition know this. It is a simple matter of your not yet having the depth of understanding regarding what the fullness of Scripture has to say on the matter. A perfect example is in response to your question regarding the accounts of creation in Genesis. Here is the short answer. Genesis chapter 1, beginning at verse 1, is a chronological account of our God creating the heavens and the earth. What you find in chapter 2 is a recalling of the creation with a focus on God's special relationship with man to include the ordination of marriage between a man and a woman as well as placing man as the steward of God's created earth. The writer is not attempting to give yet another chronological account of creation. You might read straight through the two chapters without stopping and perhaps get a better feel for the literary flow. Finally, see Exodus 20:11 Ex 20:11 NASB95 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. If you read the verse without the wider context of Scripture (that is- knowing what is said in Genesis chapter 1) one might argue that this verse declares that He created the earth first (as in land) and the Sea after. Of course we know from Genesis 1:9 what the actual, chronological order was. It does nothing to dissapoint the reading of Exodus 20:11. There is no contradiction. Hope this helps, Jeff |

208 | who is satan? | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 171862
Hello softcom, Welcome to the forum! Satan is someone much more than an angel who was cast out of Heaven for wanting to be like God. Actually, he was cast out after declaring that he WOULD BE like God (Isaiah 13:13-14) He is the one who deceives (Genesis 3: 1-7, 2Corinthians 11:14,) He has blinded the mind of unbelievers (2 Corinthians 4: 3-4). He is the tempter (Matthew 4:3) He is the one who accuses believers (Rev. 12:10), he is the adversary of believers (1 Peter 5:8). We could go on and on as the bible speaks a great deal about Satan, the Devil, the Father of Lies. But the most important thing we should know about him, is that he has been defeated by our Lord Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:15, John 19:30, Revelation 20:10) Hope this helps, Jeff |

209 | who is satan? | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 171863
Hello again softcom, Excuse me, but I forgot to answer one of your questions. You asked "From where did he come? John 1:1-3 (NASB95) 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. The Word was and is Jesus Christ. Satan was created by God. God bless, Jeff |

210 | How Can be a satan in heaven? | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 172127
Hello again softcom, Remember that Satan was created to serve God. He was an angel in Heaven and cast down after sin was found in him. Isa 14:12-15 12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! 13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." 15 But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit. NIV After he sinned against God, he was cast down. But he continues to have some acess to heaven. Job 1:6-7 (NASB95) 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it." Remember, God created Satan (as He did all things). Satan was an angel in Heaven under God's control and authority. Satan sinned against God. God cast him down. Satan is still an angel. God still has complete control and authority over him. Job 1:6-12 is a great passage that illustrates Satan's total dependence on God. That is, he does not move without the permission of his creator. In this passage I understand Satan as coming before the Lord for a purpose. Notice that the "sons of God" (angels) are coming to "present" themselves before God, Satan is doing the same. God asks "from where do you come", not because he doesn't know, but because Satan is required to give account to God. The rest of the passage demonstrate how God uses Satan to further build on Job's faith, endurance, and character. Satan seems to think he is getting away with something, but he is not. He only is allowed to do exactly what God permits. This includes some access to Heaven. Hope this helps, Jeff |

211 | People of God or angels | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 172140
Hello Lionheart, Perhaps these references might help shed some light on this. "As kings, therefore, transact their most important affairs in a solemn council or assembly, so God is pleased to represent himself as having his council likewise; and as passing the decrees of his providence in an assembly of his holy angels. We have here, in the case of Job, the same grand assembly held, as was before in that of Ahab, 1 Kings 22:6-23; the same host of heaven, called here the sons of God, presenting themselves before Jehovah, as in the vision of Micaiah they are said to stand on his right hand and on his left."—Adam Clarke's Commentary "Job 1:6 - A day - A certain time appointed by God. The sons - The holy angels, so called, Job_38:7; Dan_3:25, Dan_3:28, because of their creation by God, for their resemblance of him in power, and dignity, and holiness, and for their filial affection and obedience, to him. Before - Before his throne, to receive his commands, and to give him an account of their negotiations." (John Wesley's Explanatory Notes) "Job 1:6 - sons of God This scene is in heaven. Compare (Job_2:1-7)." (Scofield Reference Notes) "Job_1:6-12. Satan, appearing before God, falsely accuses Job. sons of God — angels (Job_38:7; 1Ki_22:19). They present themselves to render account of their “ministry” in other parts of the universe (Heb_1:14)." (JFB Commentary) "Job 1:6 - Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord,.... This is generally understood of the angels, as in Job_38:7 who may be thought to be so called, because of their creation by the father of spirits, and their likeness to God in holiness, knowledge, and wisdom, and being affectionate and obedient to him; as also on account of the grace of election, and confirmation in" (John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible) I would like to ask for clarification if I may. You responded to Jamie with "Your scriptural support here is solid" would you please point me to the Scripture references that support Jamie's references to: "After Satan and those who fell with him were shut out of heaven, and he realized that he had forever lost all its purity and glory, he repented, and wished to be reinstated in heaven. He was willing to take his proper place, or any position that might be assigned him. But no; heaven must not be placed in jeopardy. All heaven might be marred should he be taken back; for sin originated with him, and the seeds of rebellion were within him. Both he and his followers wept, and implored to be taken back into the favor of God. But their sin--their hatred, their envy and jealousy--had been so great that God could not blot it out. It must remain to receive its final punishment." Thanks and God Bless, Jeff |

212 | Where did God come from or how he exist | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 178245
Hey K.., Welcome to the forum. The Bible declares that God is eternal. Psalms 90:1-2 (NASB95) 90:1 Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. Genesis 21:33 (NASB95) 21:33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. Romans 16:25-27 (NASB95) 16:25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen. He did not "come from" anywhere. He was not made or formed. He did not come to exist. He has always existed. He will always exist. He has no beginning and no end. He is the eternal one. That's why He is God. If something else made Him, that something else would be greater than He and would, therefore, be God. I realize this is a hard thing to wrap our minds around. It's not something we can truly grasp. Revelation 1:8 (NASB95) 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." God bless, Jeff |

214 | Is It Human to Sin? | Gen 1:27 | jlhetrick | 188089
Lookn, You have contributed some very questionable posts to the Forum since your registering as a member. Like others, I'm not quite sure how to receive your questions. At times I have the sense that you are trying to create a pot to stir for your own joy of watching it swirl. At other times I wonder if you might be posting illegally (as in not meeting the age requirements –at least 18 yoa). In either case or something very different please allow me to offer a bit of advice. If you are sitting under the teachings of a preacher that believes that as Christians “we sin all the time” and then minimizes or excuses that with something as ridiculous as “we’re only human” you need to very seriously consider finding a church where the pastor uses Scripture for the basis of his messages. Really, consider whether you’re in the right place. Jeff |

216 | Are Human Beings responsible for Sin..? | Gen 2:16 | jlhetrick | 178604
Melody, Welcome to the forum. I believe humbledbyhisgrace offered a simple answer that really does address your question. I do want to make an observation though about your post. You wrote of Adam and Eve: "how can they be held responsible for the choice which came out of a natural intellectual vacuum which they inherited from birth, “without the decisive ability to know good and evil”. One thing to take into consideration here is that Adam and Eve did not have a "birth" and "inherited" nothing. They were created by God without human parents. Again, there was no "inheritance". Where you focus on intellect, we need to consider that the only intellectual functoining that they possessed prior to their willful disobedience to God, was that which God had given them. That alone serves to confirm that their intellectual functioning was sufficient. Rember, we are talking about a created being that was given charge over all of God's earthly creation. As humbled pointed out, God didn't say, don't eat or else. He said they would die if they ate of it. There was no need of the knowledge of good and evil. All the information they needed was clearly understood. They knew God as their creator. They knew that they were forbiden to eat from that particular tree. They knew what the consequences of doing so would be. They chose to believe the serpent instead. Hope this is helpful, Jeff |

Kcabml4 - Good job in encouraging exegesis. Also- welcome to the forum here is a hint on posting. If you have an original question tag your post as a question. If you are responding within a running thread (even if your response is in the form of a question) tag it as a note. This way the ongoing thread can be followed well by others and posts that are part of running threads do not pop up on the top of the home page as though they were new questions (or starts of new threads). Again, thank you for encouraging good exegesis. We can stand to have more of that. Thanks and God bless, Jeff |

219 | Are Cain and Able the first children? | Gen 4:1 | jlhetrick | 168629
Hello bookworm: Worm around in the book of Genesis :) Gen 4:1-2 4:1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man." 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. NIV Jeff |

220 | what is this verse saying | Gen 4:7 | jlhetrick | 182426
Hello Jesusisfriend, Welcome to the Forum! :) This verse has to be considered within the context of the surrounding verses. In verse 6 God asks Cain “why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?” Why would God ask a question? Certainly He did not require an answer; He is God and knew why Cain was angry and why his countenance had fallen. The question is rhetorical and God answers His own question in the following verse that you are asking about. “If you do well…” that is, if you do that which pleases God. Consider the offerings that both Cain and Abel brought to the Lord. Notice that Cain brought “an offering” while Abel brought “of the firstborn”. We know little about the practice of offerings to God at that time. What we can conclude from the written word is that one, Abel, offered from the first-fruits, from the “firstborn” indicating that he gave of the best he had. We do not see the same from Cain who simply brought “an offering”. While we are only given a glimpse here, we are clearly told that God was pleased with Abel’s offering and not with Cain’s. So the Lord teaches that if Cain, the same as us, does well (that is, does what is pleasing to God) then his (our) countenance will be lifted up or will be “accepted” by God. On the other hand, if we do not live pleasing to God (in obedience) we expose ourselves more and more to temptation resulting in sin. I believe that an awful lot of Christians today are what we might call Cain-Christians. That is, what some offer God is “an offering” and nothing close to the “first-fruits”. It’s the leftovers and not the best we have to offer. None of us can live that way before a righteous and holy God for a very long time before sin begins to once again dominate our lives. Has your countenance ever fallen? Mine has. But it is not ours to be angry with God for it. After all, we have the complete manual from which to know how to do it right. Hope this helps, Jeff |
