122 | is there only ten commandments | Matt 5:17 | Lionstrong | 48024
Dear Elder, No, but THE Ten Commandments (Ex 34:28) are the covenant God made with the Old Testament Church. They are recorded in Exodus 20, and Deut. 5. They apply to God's New Testament Church today as well. They summarized all the other moral commands of God. And they themselves can be summed up with the two commands of Christ to love God and love our neighbor (Luke 10:27). Peace, |

123 | holy ghost | 2 Tim 1:14 | Lionstrong | 48020
Dear Elder, It's a commom mistake, but you refered to the Holy Spirit as "it." The Holy Spirit is a person, not a thing. John 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; John 14:17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. 124 | How to explain Jesus' exclusive claim? | John 14:6 | Lionstrong | 47693
Dear Parable, Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, was not intellectually ashamed of the Gospel of Christ before the Greek worldview and culture. He openly challenged the Greek world to explain their objection to the idea that God raises the dead. Even in a totally non-Jewish environment in the Areopagus of Athens he was not intellectually intimidated to be kept from preaching the resurrection, an idea ridiculed by the Greek mind. When Paul stood in the midst of Mar’s hill his method was not to aviod biblical teaching, but to make the biblical teaching understood, even though it might be intellectually ridiculed The aim of our apologetic does not end with the defense of the truth against attackers, but in making the Gospel understood, as Paul did. This does not mean that we ever back off presenting what the Bible teaches, but if you will notice, Paul did not quote Scripture to those who were unfamiliar with it. But he gave them the biblical worldview nonetheless. With the Jews he did give Scriptural support for his arguments. Another point: it is one thing to explain the Gospel to the biblically illiterate, and another to explain it to hostiles who are familiar (or think they are familiar) with biblical concepts. Even familiar opponents may really be ignorant of the concepts of Scripture. Here it is a judgement call weather to support your arguments with Bible quotes. Even if they don’t believe what they think they know of the Bible, they at least may be convinced by proof texts weather the knowledge they thought they had was really accurate or not. It is still an improvement or progress when your opponent has accurate knowledge of Christianity. Some unbelievers are really fighting a misconception of Christianity rather that Christianity itself. Biblical proof texts are really for believers and for those who accept the Bible as, if not the authority, at least an authority. Sometimes it is not the exclusivity of Christianity that must be defended, but the beliefs (presuppositions, if you will) of the unbeliever that must be attacked before the Gospel will be given a hearing. At that point the argument become ad hominem, that is, taking the opponents position and demonstrating the futility of it. The unbeliever’s beliefs/presuppositions causes him to see Christianity as being absurd or to not see it at all! Therefore ad hominem arguments become necessary in order to remove those roadblocks to understanding the Gospel. What is sometimes behind an objection to the exclusivity of Christ is the belief that truth is relative, and it is that notion which must be defeated first. Without the understanding that Christianity sees truth as absolute, the Gospel will not be properly understood. Without the understanding that relative truth is self-contradictory, biblical Christianity will be misunderstood or seen as absurd. Peace, |

125 | Can we figure out God's Truth | 2 Tim 3:16 | Lionstrong | 47379
Dear Arnie, Yes, we can figure out God's Truth from the Bible by our selves. But KNOWING God's truth will not save us from the wrath of God. Knowing is not the same as believing. It's only by believing God's truth that saves us. And FAITH (believing) is the gift of God. We cannot get faith by our selves (Ephesians 2:8,9). The wrath of God is revealed against people who know the truth about God, but who do not honor God although they know the truth about him, but rather they hold or suppress that truth in unrighteousness. (Rom 1:18 and following) I know some believers think that an unbeliever can't understand the Bible or the preaching of the Word without the illumination of the Holy Spirit. But it is knowledge that makes us accountable to God not free will. The Pharasees very well understood what Jesus was preaching. That's why their condemnation was greater. Not only were they self-righteous, but they understood the claims of Christ and did not believe. Knowledge is the prerequisite to faith (Rom 10:9FF). God made man in his image, that is, with a reasonable soul. With these reasonable souls we can think, understand and learn and love. Our fallen nature does not keep us from knowing and learning the truth. It keeps us from handling the truth properly. In our fallen state we hold the truth in unrighteousness. It's not that we haven't learned it. So the problem is sin, not knowledge. Sin keeps us from believing and handling the truth rightly; it does not always keep us from learning it, although sometimes, maybe often, it does. Only Jesus can save his people from their sins. (Mat. 1:21) He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. (Heb 12:2) Peace, |

126 | predestined, only certain ones are saved | Matt 7:21 | Lionstrong | 47355
Dear nursebeek, The quote you gave is a misrepresentation of a biblical position. I recommend that you research the Presbyterian Church in America web site: www.pcanet.org, and click on "beliefs." We do make choices. However, our choices are determined by our nature, which is fallen and totally corrupt And, of course, all things including our choices are subject to the sovereignty of God Almighty. But our choices are nonetheless real, and for those choices we will be held accountable. I would also add, to clear up a misunderstanding, that responsibility is not based on our ability to make choices but upon our knowledge of God's will. Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, Rom 1:19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. Rom 1:21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Peace, |

127 | How do we interpret scripture? | Gen 1:14 | Lionstrong | 47258
Dear Parable, So that we won't get sidetracked, let us not deal with a defense of the Doctor's views, I'm agreed. Let’s just deal with the question itself: How does one by a straight forward reading of the Bible without imposing non-biblical premises on it, conclude that creation is millions of years old? By straight forward reading is meant reading without premises the book does not contain. A non-biblical premise is any proposition that does not come from Scripture or that is not deduced logically from the content of Scripture. Peace, |

128 | Concerning Does God foreordain murder | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 47217
Dear New Creation, Deut 13:1 "If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, Deut 13:2 and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them,' Deut 13:3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Deut 13:4 "You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. Deut 13:5 "But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has counseled rebellion against the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to seduce you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil from among you." God purposes all things after the counsel of his own will (Eph 1:11). Our job is not to second guess God's purposes in his control of a fallen and evil world, but to obey his commands concerning the sin and evil we face. We are to hate sin and act against evil. One verse that comes particularly to mind is Eph 5:11, "Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them." Hence, our fight against abortion. Peace, |

129 | Put on disease yet being our Healer? | Ex 15:26 | Lionstrong | 46720
Dear Miss or Mrs. Weston, Would you call an unjust judge good? God is a just judge, and the diseases he put on Egypt was a judgement. See what he said to Abraham: Gen. 15:14 "But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve; and afterward they will come out with many possessions. I hope this answer was not too brief. But sometimes God will heal an unbeliever, but if that unbeliever does not repent his healing will add to his guilt. See Rom. 2: Rom. 2:4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? Rom. 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, Rom. 2:6 who will render to every man according to his deeds: And Welcome to the Forum. 130 | Any doubt Jesus no longer needs faith? | Matt 24:36 | Lionstrong | 46669
Dear Tomn, Your comment show the importance of knowing what our words mean, in this case, faith. Faith and knowledge are not opposites, such that to have one means not having the other. In fact faith, at least saving faith, requires knowledge. One cannot have saving faith unless one knows the Gospel of Christ (See Rom 10:1-17). Since faith means to believe, it does not make sense to say that Jesus in heaven does not believe what is true there. Don't confuse the fact that he NEEDED to believe on earth back then and that he DOES believe now. Knowledge does not cancel faith. It is the object of it. Peace, |

131 | End justifies means? | 1 Cor 1:21 | Lionstrong | 46659
Dear Charis, The end DOES justify the means. The problem is the end. If the end is anything less than the glory of God, then the means will always be immoral. If the end is the glory of God, no immorality or foolishness is possible, because no immorality glorifies God. In this case, if the end is to “bring people to Christ” rather than TO GLORIFY GOD in bringing people to Christ, then any kind of foolishness is acceptable. Col 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. Peace, |

133 | Where does Jesus say He is God? | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 46321
Dear Ineffable: In this long discussion has anyone answered your original question? Well, in answer to your question, such a verse cannot be found. Jesus is never quoted as saying directly that he is God. Now, the Bible does teache that he is, and that point has been adequately demonstrated. However, it is interesting to note that though he had opportunity to deny equality with God, he did not. See the following passages. John 10:31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. John 10:32 Jesus answered them, "I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?" John 10:33 The Jews answered Him, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God." John 10:34 Jesus answered them, "Has it not been written in your Law, 'I SAID, YOU ARE GODS'? John 10:35 "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), John 10:36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? Please note that (1)this is not a denial, and (2) he had an opportunity to make a denial. John 5:17 But He answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working." John 5:18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. John 5:19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. John 5:20 "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. John 5:21 "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. John 5:22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, John 5:23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. Again, please note, (1)no denial and (2)opportunity. Peace, |

134 | Lionstrong, What does God say in 38:1ff? | Job 1:22 | Lionstrong | 46254
Dear Searcher, In his laying in to Job God did not accuse him of charging God foolishly. Job did not charge God foolishly. This was not his sin. His sin is identified by Elihu in chapter 32 and following. Otherwise, what Job said about God, in contrast to what his friends said, was right by God’s own testimony. (42:7) Peace, |

135 | Job DID charge God foolishly? | Job 1:22 | Lionstrong | 45696
Dear Baptistbred, I start by quoting Job 42:1-7: "Then Job answered the LORD and said, "I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' "Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know." 'Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask You, and You instruct me.' "I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees You; Therefore I retract, And I repent in dust and ashes." It came about after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken of Me what is right as My servant Job has."" Job did not charge God foolishly. This was not his sin. His sin is identified by Elihu in chapter 32 and following. Otherwise, what Job said about God, in contrast to what his friends said, was right by God’s own testimony. The passage in Job IX is referring to a man’s own guiltlessness. Job understood that no man can stand absolutely guiltless before God, and God in His absolute and terrible justice “destroys the guiltless…” The only way a man can stand guiltless before God is to be clothed in the perfect righteousness of Christ. To charge God foolishly is to accuse of God of doing wrong. This, Job did not do. As in chapter 42, in chapter 9 Job is declaring the absolute Sovereignty of God in all He does. In other words, Job was saying that no matter what God does it is right, and it's right just because it is God who does it. Peace, |

137 | Sovereignity and Abortion | Jer 1:5 | Lionstrong | 45351
Dear New Creature: Why do you make your question so narrow? The better and more general question would be, "How does evil fit in God's sovereign purpose?" Now the answer would still be that we don't exactly know, but we know that it does. Jesus, of course, would be the supreme example of God purposing evil for our good and His glory. Acts 2:23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. Gen 50:20 "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Peace, |

138 | Shouldn't we do something? | Matthew | Lionstrong | 38940
Hi Dave, I LOVE that line in Lewis' book! I think it's an excellent illustration of a proper fear of God Almighty, the Lion of Judah! Now, to your good question: You ask, "So, regarding our righteousness in the context of our life hear and now, don't you think there is anything we can do to facilitate God's working in our lives?" (In other words, “ Can we help God sanctify us?”) No. Just as by our efforts to keep God's holy commandments we cannot attain righteousness, our efforts to keep God's commands will not facilitate God's sanctification of us. Sanctification, as is the whole of our salvation, is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. The basic principle is that God gets ALL the glory for our salvation... from beginning to end: Ehp 2:8,9,10 We are saved by God's grace alone "...that no one should boast..." Rom 3:27,28 Because justification is all of grace, boasting is excluded. "Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law." Rom 8:29-30 from predestinating to glorifying us, our salvation is all God's work. Heb 12:2, Phil 1:6 God does not leave his work unfinished. Having begun our salvation by grace through faith, we then do not attempt to be made perfect by our efforts (or in the words of your question, “facilitate God’s working in our lives”). Gal 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? It is by God's work in us that we will and do the working out of our salvation. So again, God alone gets the glory, not us. Phil 2:12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; Phil 2:13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. By faith we work and walk in the Spirit’s power, not ours, so that God may be glorified. 1 Pet 4:11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Jesus succinctly summarizes Paul's discourse on sanctification (Rom 5-8): John 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent." And we need to be quickly reminded that we can take no credit for believing, because faith is the gift of God also. Just as the means of God’s grace to bring us to faith is the word of Christ (Rom 10:17), it is this same means he uses to grow our faith in Christ. In practice this means belonging to a good church where the Word is faithfully preached, and discipline and the sacraments are faithfully maintained; Bible reading and study; and prayer. "Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen." Jude 1:24,25 Peace, Lionstrong |

139 | Is there nothing we can do? | Matthew | Lionstrong | 38756
Yes, I am related to the One C. S. Lewis allegorized in his Chronicles! He's my Brother and King! Hi Dave, Yes, Dave, that is what I am saying. Is 64:6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; Our efforts to obtain righteousness only pollutes. Because we are totally corrupt in our fallen nature, righteousness is and must be a gift from God. Paul quotes God's view of human nature: Rom 3:10 as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; Rom 3:11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; Rom 3:12 ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE." Rom 3:13 "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING," "THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS"; Rom 3:14 "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS"; Rom 3:15 "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, Rom 3:16 DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, Rom 3:17 AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN." Rom 3:18 "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES." You ask, "...after we receive Christ through faith in Him (true faith, not a "said" faith) that there is nothing we can do to help in obtaining righteousness, that it's all up to God?" Well... after one has obtained something, there is no need to thereafter help obtain it. He already has it! Yes, it (our righteousness, salvation, eternal life) is all up God. The Father draws you and gives you to the Son. John 6:37,44 "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me... No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day." On the cross the Son takes your pollution, becomes a curse in your place and dies with it. In exchange, He gives you, clothes you in, His perfect righteousness. 2 Cor 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. The Father and Son hold you in an unbreakable grip and seal you in the unbreakable seal of the Holy Spirit Himself, who is the guarantee of our inheritance! John 10:28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 3 John 10:29 "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. Eph 1:13,14 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory. Righteousness, Dave, is only the beginning of our Salvation. God has a lot more for us and it all ends in glory! But until then we can rest assured ... "that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Phil 1:6 Peace, Lionstrong |
