61 | OT Laws - still apply today? | Lev 20:9 | Lionstrong | 85711
Another way to look at it would be to say that if none of the OT Law applied to us then it would be OK to: 1. Resurrect the worship of Baal, 2. Make an image of Jesus and bow before it, 3. Be a slick televangelist, 4. Work seven days a week, 5. Not help our elderly parents, 6. Vote pro-choice, 7. Have a mistress or two, 8. Cheat on our taxes, 9. Slander people we don't like, 10. And always complain because "the Jones" have more than we do. |

62 | Where did evil come from? | Gen 3:22 | Lionstrong | 83659
"evil does not exist. Evil is simply the absence of God. Evil is a term man developed to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. It isn't like truth, or love, which exist as virtues like heat and light. Evil is simply the state where God is not present, like cold without heat or darkness without light." The professor had nothing to say" Since this is a forum for Bible study, someone should do a study on the subject of evil. I'm sure the above statement will prove to be false and sophistic. Sin is evil. And sin is not the absence of God. Besides, God is omnipresent. So if God (who, by the way, created the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) is everywhere, then there would be no evil, if the above view of evil were true. Even if we make our bed in hell, God is there. (Ps 139:8) |

63 | what about (reliable) modern prophecy? | Jer 18:10 | Lionstrong | 73110
K, I think this passage of Scripture speaks to your situation: Deut. 18:21 "You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?' Deut. 18:22 "When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. In other words, what your friends prophesied to you was not of God. God keeps his word, as the verse I shared before says: Num. 23:19 "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? And God's word does not fail to accomplish what he sends it out to do: Is 55:11 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. I think the preachers have prophesied falsely and are trying to get themselves off the hook by saying that sometimes prophesies don't come true. According to God's word, all prophesies from God come true, and if it does not come true, then it is not of God. 1 Thess. 5:20-24,"...do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass." Peace, |

64 | ways Pilate guilty? | John 19:11 | Lionstrong | 73094
Is "treason" the right word, C? Pilate was a Roman citizen. In sentencing Jesus he committed no treason against Rome. So, I don't understand your question. Now, Pilate was guilty of sin. Jesus said it in this way: "Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."" (John 19:11) So, although Pilate had sinned against Jesus (in knowingly condemning an innocent man), Jesus said that those who delivered him to Pilate had the greater sin. Peace, |

65 | How can God change his mind? | Jer 18:10 | Lionstrong | 73085
Mal 3:6 "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Num. 23:19 "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Ex 32:14 So the LORD changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people. Jer. 26:13 "Now therefore amend your ways and your deeds and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will change His mind about the misfortune which He has pronounced against you. Above we have two verses that state that God does not change his mind, i.e. repent. We also have a sample of verses that say that God has or will change his mind, i.e. repent. How do we understand these verses or does the Bible contradict itself? No, God's word does not contradict itself. And God does not change his mind. God is immutable. He does not change; he is eternally the same. Then how do we understand the verses that say he has or will change his mind? We understand such verses as anthropomorphisms, describing God's actions as if he were a man. But God is not a man that he should repent. What he has done, is doing, will do, he has had a mind to do from eternity. And he has not changed his mind about it. When Ninevah repented at the preaching of Jonah, God knew that they would and had planned that they would from eternity. Heb. 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Peace, |

67 | How Old was Jesus when Magi Visited? | NT general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 71332
Matt 2:11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matt 2:16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. Welcome to the forum, Dalida! Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were no longer in the inn's stable when the magi came. They were in a house. Jesus was two years old or less when the magi visited. Peace, |

68 | Were is the sinners prayer in the Bible? | Luke 18:10 | Lionstrong | 71176
Hello Christian Tim, You ask, "Where is the "sinners prayer" in the Bible? Since we know that the Holy Spirit is our mediator and speaks to God on our behalf how can a sinner which is seperated from God and dosen't have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit communicate with God on his own behalf and in his own way?" Here is the sinner's prayer: Luke 18:10 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. Luke 18:11 "The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: 'God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. Luke 18:12 'I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' Luke 18:13 "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!' Luke 18:14 "I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." The answer from Reformed Theology perspective is that you are right. No one comes to Christ unless the Spirit of the Father draws him. (Jn 6:44) The sinner repents and calls on the Lord for salvation by the effectual working of The Spirit in his heart to generate repentance and faith to call on the Lord. For whoever calls on the Lord in faith shall be saved. But how shall they call... etc.,. (Rom 10:13ff) Peace, |

69 | How God feels about praise | John 4:24 | Lionstrong | 71168
These verse, I am sure, are just a few of God attitude toward our praise. Some are positive, others negative. Peace, John 4:24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Is 29:13 Then the Lord said, "Because this people draw near with their words And honor Me with their lip service, But they remove their hearts far from Me, And their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote, Is 43:23 "You have not brought to Me the sheep of your burnt offerings, Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, Nor wearied you with incense. Is 43:24 "You have bought Me not sweet cane with money, Nor have you filled Me with the fat of your sacrifices; Rather you have burdened Me with your sins, You have wearied Me with your iniquities. Is 1:11 "What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?" Says the LORD. "I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle; And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats. Is 1:12 "When you come to appear before Me, Who requires of you this trampling of My courts? Is 1:13 "Bring your worthless offerings no longer, Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies-- I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly. Is 1:14 "I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. Is 1:15 "So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood. Is 1:16 "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil, Is 1:17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow. Mic 6:7 Does the LORD take delight in thousands of rams, In ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? Mic 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God? 1 Sam 15:22 Samuel said, "Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 2 Ps 51:16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. Ps 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. 3 Ps 51:19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar. 4 Hos 6:6 For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. Heb 13:15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. |

70 | Does God help those that help themselves | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 68435
I disagree with the interpretation and answer of Tremere, Retxar. Read the Psalms to see God's care for the helpless orphans and widows. Ps 146:9 The LORD protects the strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow, But He thwarts the way of the wicked. Read the Prophets to see God's condemnation for not defending those who don't have the means to defend themselves, the poor, the fatherless, and the widow. Is 1:23 Your rulers are rebels And companions of thieves; Everyone loves a bribe And chases after rewards. They do not defend the orphan, Nor does the widow's plea come before them. Being like God (godly) means coming to the aid of the helpless. Proverbs says: Prov 31:9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy. To paraphrase Jesus, "It is not those who can help themselves who need help, but those who are helpless." Luke 5:31,32 The whole of our salvation is based on the fact of our moral helplessness. To quote Paul, "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly." Rom 5:6 No, God does not help those who help themselves. Prayer, then, is NOT an act of helping our selves. It is in the recognition our weakness and helplessness that we call upon God. Heb 4:16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Peace, |

71 | Why did God create man? | Rev 4:11 | Lionstrong | 68080
You are right. God was not lonely and he had no need of man otherwise. You are also correct in asking why, because God did have a reason for creating the heavens and the earth and everything in them and man. Rev 4:11 says, "Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created." The ultimate purpose for all things is the glory of God. Rom 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. Ephesians 1 is one long doxology that all things are to the praise of the glory of God. Man will glorify God's great mercy in Christ in by being saved from the just wrath of God. Or man will glorify God's terrible justice in being condemned for his cruelty, sin and rebellion. The company of the redeemed, the church, will glorify God's many-sided wisdom. Eph 3:10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places. Peace, in the Lamb |

72 | What was Pilate's sin? Does it matter? | Romans | Lionstrong | 66887
Hello Searcher, What was Pilate's sin? His sin was two fold: 1. He knowingly condemned an innocent man. Luke 23:4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man." 2. The innocent man he crucified was the Lord of Glory. 1 Cor 2:8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; Does it matter? I think your point is: If any sin makes us guilty of the whole Law, then all sins are equally heinous. God is indifferent to what sins we commit. They are all the equally heinous to Him. Do you see that this does not follow logically? The Lord commanded his people to tithe, but the "weightier" laws were those of justice and mercy. Matt 23:23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. So, yes, it does matter to God what sins we commit. He's not indifferent to what sins we commit. And some sins are more serious than others. Now, don't get me wrong, Searcher. I think the Catholic view of venial and cardinal sins is unbiblical. While it recognizes that some sins are more serious than others, it does not have a proper view of sin itself. Sin is any lack of conformity to or transgression of the law of God. As such, no sin is excusable. Even the least sin deserves God's just wrath and condemnation. Eating a forbidden fruit will get you kicked out of the pool and into the lake of fire just the same as being a Jack the Ripper. Peace, |

73 | Is slavery OK? (Lev 25:44) | Lev 25:44 | Lionstrong | 66841
Your questions: Does this place slavery inside the will of God? Yes, this does place slavery inside the will of God, otherwise God would not approve of Paul calling himself or other believers bondslaves of Christ (Rom 1:1; Col 4:12) nor would God call his people his servants (v. 55) In a fallen world slavery among men is not the ideal but it is the reality. And God gives us commands to deal with that reality. Reading the chapter, it is interesting to note that God makes a distinction between his people and aliens. Lev 25:39 'If a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave's service. Lev 25:42 'For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale. Also, Jewish servants of Jews were not allowed to remain servants beyond six years or the Year of Jubilee, unless they made themselves bondslaves of their Jewish master. (Exodus 21; Lev 25:40) Likewise in the NT Christian slaves are encouraged to acquire freedom if they could. 1 Cor 7:21 Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that. Christian masters of Christian slaves are commanded not to treat them as slaves, but as brothers. The whole letter of Paul to Philemon is about the return of a runaway slave. When the runaway had come across Paul, he heard the Gospel and believed. Paul then sent him back to his Christian master Philemon with the instruction, "For perhaps he was for this reason separated from you for a while, that you would have him back forever, no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord." (Philem 1:15,16) Also, when you think of slavery in the Bible, don't think of the European/American slave trade. The slavery God regulated in Israel was voluntary or by God-sanctioned conquest. The African slaves, many or most of them were stolen. The Americans knew that they were buying stolen goods! You asked, "did God condone slavery for any purpose? Of course not! Slaves couldn't be used for sinful purposes. God gave ordinances that gave slaves certain rights and protections. Ex 21:20 "If a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod and he dies at his hand, he shall be punished. Ex 21:21 "If, however, he survives a day or two, no vengeance shall be taken; for he is his property Ex 21:24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Ex 21:25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. Ex 21:26 "If a man strikes the eye of his male or female slave, and destroys it, he shall let him go free on account of his eye. Ex 21:27 "And if he knocks out a tooth of his male or female slave, he shall let him go free on account of his tooth. Ex 23:12 "Six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave, as well as your stranger, may refresh themselves. Eph 6:9 And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him. Col 4:1 Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven. To recap, God should be the only Ruler, and the Lord and His Christ the only Master. In a fallen world the reality is that we have men who rule over us and men who are masters. God has ordained or regulates both. Peace, |

76 | Did NASA prove Josh 10:13 to be true? | Josh 10:12 | Lionstrong | 66683
Hello Pastor Barney, It is incorrect to say something proves an item in the Bible. If something proves the Bible then that something becomes the final authority, not the Bible. God's word is its own authority. We don't prove the Bible. We start with the Bible, God's revelation of truth to man, and prove everything else by it. A proper understanding is that sometimes something --corroborates-- an item or two in Scripture. But it in no way supports upholds or proves God's Word. God's Word is the final authority, not the discoveries or scientific or ecclesiastic pontifications of man. Ps 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. Ps 119:130 The unfolding of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. John 17:17 "... Your word is truth." Peace, |

77 | big-bang theory | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 66593
Dear Itisfinished, Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen 1:31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Ex 20:11 "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, This is the reality. God created the universe and everything in it in the space of six days and all very good. The Big Bang does not really give us a beginning. It says matter and space have always existed. Well, If it has always existed, then as far as we know the universe has always been expanding and contracting. There was no "first" big band. The theory is correct, however, in saying that there MUST be something that has always existed, but the Bible says that it WAS NOT matter and space. They did have a beginning. They were created by God commanding them to be. What has always existed, according to the Bible is the personal, Triune Lord God Almighty. Ps 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host. Ps 33:9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. Peace, |

79 | How many children did Adam and Eve have? | Gen 5:4 | Lionstrong | 66104
Hello Clerk, and Welcome to the Forum! Besides Cain, Abel and Seth, God does not tell us how many others there were. He just tells us: Gen 5:4 Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. Considering how long they lived they may have had many. God just does not tell us. The important thing to remember is that Adam and Eve were the first and only parents of all of humanity. Adam is the head of the human race. When he fell into sin, all of humanity, except Christ, fell and became sinners with him. Rom 5:19, "For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners... " Christ is the head of the redeemed race. When he lived a sinless life and conquered sin and death on the cross, all who are in him become righteous. Rom 5:19, "For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous." Peace, |

80 | Are some sins greater than others? | Romans | Lionstrong | 65902
Yes, Henri, in answer to your question, and Welcom to the Forum! There are numerous examples of some sins being greater than others, but I'll give just one. John 19:11 Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."
