1 | what does the bible say about poligamy? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 106473
annette, hi! There are many situations in the Old Testament where poligamy is practiced openly by the people of Israel. Two of the most confusing examples are David and Salomon. These were God's anointed kings. Their devotion to God and His Commandments was evident at the beginning of their carreers. David refuse to take Saul's life in order to gain the promised kingdom and Salomon asked only for wisdom to rule Israel... Yet they both became weak and gave in to their carnal pleasures: David took the wife of one of his generals (he even murdered him in order to hide his wickedness!), and Salomon, perhaps seeking the vanity of youth and manhood, became a hoarder of females. What I find relevant is Jesus' stand on poligamy: Matthew 5:31-32 and, more specifically, Matthew 5:27-28 "you have heard how it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say this to you, if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Jesus may not have mentioned the word poligamy. But He left no doubt to what God expects of us on this matter. And not everyone welcomed Jesus' revelations. The Pharisees must have heard about His anti divorce stand and they ckecked Him: Matthew 19:3-9. Even Jesus' disciples were having problems with His marriage decree: Matthew 19:10. I hope that this has been of use to you. God Bless! |

2 | Why should we pray? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 106562
Hi, scott! Is this a Bible/Religious youth group? If it is, you must first explain to all the members what the group is about (prayer, Bible study, wholesome--Biblical definition--recreational activities, etc.); secondly, establish ground rules (i.e.: those not ready to join the prayers should engage in quiet activities that would respect the prayer session and the rest of the members who are praying); lastly, engage them in activities that are constructive and educational. Regardless of the type of youth group, know that their background is not conductive to humble exchange. You as a spiritual leader must use Jesus formula for forgiveness (70 x 7--not that there is a set limit on forgiveness); also, you must organize activities that can help them discover their constructive abilities. You must not scold them for not understanding what prayer is or for not joining enthusiastically. And PRAY for their enlightenment. You might also want to include religious videos, organize an art/performing art club (with emphasis on Jesus--His birth, private and public life, miracles, suffering, death, resurrection... God Bless! |

3 | is homosexuality wrong? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 106770
Greetings incuboarder! There are many Bible passages that explain exactly how God feels about homosexuality. Not a single verse condones it. From the Olt Testament to the New Testament God has demonstrated that the homosexual act is abhored by Him. God is so adamant about this that He even forbids the exchange of clothing between a male and a female. Paul writes about this and other behavior in Romans 1:18-39. There are some very specific and prominent points: verses 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, and 32. And as far as God (don't forget to capitalize the letter "G" when you refer to God--it is a sign of respect!) "make me feel this way?," look at what James tells us about this: (James 1:13-15) "Never, when you are being put to the test, say 'God is tempting me'; God cannot be tempted by evil, and he does not put anybody to the test. Everyoe is put to the test by being attracted and seduced by that person's own wrong desire. Then the desire conceives and give birth to sin, and when sin reaches full growth, it gives birth to death." Do not be deceived by those who desire to place the blame on God for any wrong that we as sinners commit. God will not call you to unrightousness, neither does He want you to die a sinner: Ezekiel 18:32 "I take no pleasure in the death of anyone--declares the Lord Yahwey--so repent and live!" May you find your way back to God! But remember, Jesus is the only Way and He commands this: "So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up all that he owns." (Luke 14:33) All means everything that we possess, everything that we value, everything that we do, everything that we do not do, all that we are! Seek God in earnest and He will find you! |

4 | Is being remarried an eternal sin? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 106775
BlindFaith, Hi! We your parents aware of the Biblical mandate about marriage and God's emnity towards divorce? Are they Christians? Paul wrote a little about the problems of those seeking marriage/divorce/coupled life: 1 Corinthians 6:12 thru 7:40 and Ephesians 5:21-33. Jesus was more succinct and less flexible: Matthew 5:27-37 and Matthew 19:1-10. Since they are both alive and you said that their divorce was not due to adultery, when they began to court/sleep with/a second marriage they committed adultery. Were they not Christians at the time and therefore not fully aware of their sin, then Paul says that they are not guilty. Were they Christians and fully aware of their responsibility on God's eyes, then they are guilty of adultery. Regarless, adultery is not an eternal sin. The only sin that is eternal is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit! (Mark 3:29) Now, as kalos pointed out another divorce is not going to help matter--lest they now understand their error and remarry each other and live according to Jesus' commandment (Matthew 19:6). But remember, God is generous and merciful. Through prayer you can help them (if they have not done so yet) understand their error--other wise they may just repeated again after the novelty of their new marriages has been outgrown--repent from their sin, turn to God, and build their new lives in the Lord! God Bless |

6 | The Jesus formula? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 106841
Hello, JGA216! The Jesus formula which I am referrig to is Matthew 18:21-22. I believe that there is a logic behind it (ergo formula): When we forgive our brothers 7 times 70 we are demonstrating great love and patience. Also we are bound to lose count after the 10th or so offense. I believe that Jesus was not setting a limit on the amount of times that we are to forgive--those were simple times (not too many people had twenty pairs of matching shoes and purses) and such a multiple would seem a tremendous amount to keep track of. And, I believe that Christ was bringing us to the Father's position on forgiveness: Isaiah 1:18-19. Hope it's been clarified! God Bless! |

7 | Satan in your mind | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 107057
Hi, cbrinkmeyer! I've come accross that idea since I was a child... No, Satan cannot control your thoughts! God who can search your whole being (1 Corinthians 2:6-16) chooses not to do so! In Job we see a clear example of Satan's power and limits (Job 1:6-12). And in Matthew 4:2-11 we also see not only his powers but his boldness; yet, Satan yields to God every time. Genesis 3:15 is the most dramatic depiction of Satan's impotence: the serpent's head is subjugated! James 1:13 and 1 Corinthians 10:13 tell us about temptation and the support mechanism that is in place. Satan, the father of lies, can manipulate even God's own words (as with Eve--surely you will not die...) But he does not have the power to enter our thoughts. Though there is a Biblical example when he did (Judas' betrayal), but only because God had given Satan the authority to do so (John 17:12). But what we really should be worrying about is (James 4:8), are WE getting CLOSER to GOD? Blessed Christmas! |

8 | Tithes | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 107147
Hi, nakia1980! She is correct in saying that the tithing was an ordinance set for the people of Israel. At the time when tithing was established it was a different economy, one based on our temporal world. It was meant to secure the priesthood's well being, to cover the expenses of the Tent and everything dealing with worship (including feeding and housing the tribe of Levi), and it was also set up to assist the destitute. When Jesus came He changed the economy: (Hebrews 7:2 - 8:13). But Jesus did not say that we are no longer accountable to our brethren: (Luke 18:22; 19:8-9; John 13:29); in Luke 18:22, Jesus even places a clause that links our charity to heaven. In Acts 2:44-47 and 4:32-36, we find that those of the faith (Christians) share both spiritual and material wealth. And in Romans 15:26-28, we can verify that sharing of spiritual and material wealth was not limited to a small local community--it was brought to the universal Church. These questions on tithing (yes/no) do not have their origins in our times. In the early Church, Paul had to deal with those who began to question the need for the financial support of the Church (1 Corinthians 9;11-18). He scolded them for questioning his authority and motives and he reminded them that he never requested any assistance, though the Lord had allowed for such provisions. Jesus distinctly state that He did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). Though many of the old ceremonial observances changed, Jesus enhanced the status of the commandments of the Law (Matthew 5:17 - 7:23 and Hebrews 2:9 - 10:39), He did not simply do away with it! So the command about the tithing stands; not in the same manner and functions as in the Old Testament, but in a new and higher plane (Romans 12:1-21). Verse 2 specifically talks about conversion of mind (how we view, how we think, moral values, etc.), and though many gifts are spoken of, there is one particular function that, while not being a gift, requires that we perform it generously (in love), verse 8. And, melting away any confusion about our tithing obligations verse 13 tells us about hospitality. Respectively, verse 20 echoes Jesus' words in Matthew 5:38-48: God is about giving and we are required to be as He is. Tithing has not been abolished, it has been exalted to a spiritual level that requires not a only mere material sacrifice, but a spiritual embrace as well: Do it generously, with love and humilty, for Christ's sake! One more point, nakia1980, have you ever read Genisis 14:17-20? The depiction here is of a king, who happens to be the high priest of the Almighty, that meets Abraham. Abraham is blessed by him and receives bread and wine. Then Abraham offers this priest the tenth of all the spoils that he had gathered. Israel had not been born ( the nation), there was no kingdom, and there was no priest--so is tithing only a thing of our past? Have a Blessed Christmas! |

10 | RoS, What do we do with the OT (Law)? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 107464
Hi, Searcher56! There seem to be conflicting teachings in the Bible, especially if a single/few passages are studied exclusively; se we must seek to compare as much Biblical material as possible before coming to a conclusion. The best way to explain this to you is revisiting Romans 7:14-25; but when Paul says that the law of the Spirit brings us life (Romans 8:1-17) he did not promote abolishing the Law! (Romans 3:31) Paul was true to his Master (Matthew 5:17-20), who came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it! God Bless! P.S.: For indepth study: Romans 7:7 through 11:36. |

11 | What if Eve had eaten from the other tre | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 107582
Hello, big mo! I hate getting into the "what if" arguments... but here goes: The sepent: Satan. The prey: God's Authority. The bait: Eve. The sucker: Adam. The death: Spiritual. The Wisdom: God's! Satan had limited vision from the beginning (other wise he would not have attempted to assail God's Throne) so when it came to oblitarating God's creation he couldn't but fail. He was so short-sighted in his quest for vengeance that he could not reason other then countermand God's command! Since Adam and Eve were innocent (lacking judgement: good vs. bad), they could not come up with a subversive plan. And once caught in the sin (at this time they were fully aware that they had transgressed) fear got the best of them, and all that wisdom that the serpent promised simply faded away! Hope this helps! God Bless! |

13 | Why has the Bible not been added to? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 108640
Hi, kandrews! There are many people who will ask for very specific answers as proof of Devine Pronouncement; all I can give you is the Scripture’s testament: In Genesis we see the pronouncement of the first prophecy concerning Jesus, the devil and the world to come: I shall put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; it will bruise your head and you will strike its heel.’ (Genesis 3:15) This struggle (battle/war) is expanded upon in Revelation 12: Its tail swept a third of the stars from the sky and hurled them to the ground, and the dragon stopped in front of the woman as she was at the point of giving birth, so that it could eat the child as soon as it was born. The woman was delivered of a boy, the son who was to rule all the nations with an iron sceptre, and the child was taken straight up to God and to his throne, (Revelation 12:4-5) Then the dragon was enraged with the woman and went away to make war on the rest of her children, who obey God’s commandments and have in themselves the witness of Jesus. (Revelation 12:17) I liken Genesis 3:15 and Revelation 12 to the Head Lines on news stories; they talk about rebellion of Satan and his impotence in subverting God’s Plan and Authority, while simultaneously revealing his hold on spiritual beings and his determination to threaten Christ’s siblings. Throughout the Old Testament there are revelations being made through prophecies about God’s Salvation Plan which is personified in Jesus Christ: Deuteronomy 18:15; Isaiah 9:6; 52:13 - 53:12; John 1:1-5, 9-14. Jesus defined His role in our Salvation this way: Jesus said: I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man; as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might be saved. No one who believes in him will be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, because that person does not believe in the Name of God’s only Son. And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness to the light because their deeds were evil. And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from being shown up; but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear as done in God.’ (John 3:13-21) |

14 | How can I deal with satan showing hiself | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 116602
Hi, Shey! Remember that this battle is not simply on the corporal level; there are principalities (players) that are among us in a spiritual plane of existence... I've heard of others having such experiences... I have had both awake and dreaming experiences... Here's a simple but Powerful Prayer: JESUS! Just repeat our Lord's name over and over and over... I have gotten so good at this that even in my dreams I recognize myself dreaming and reading the Bible! Don't forget that: Greater is He that is in me (us) than he that is in the world! Jesus is your Rock and Salvation--call on Him in Faith and Trust and He will not let you down! God Bless! Angel |

15 | Praying for my husband | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 116800
Hi, 8788! True, I feel what you are saying about Christ (Isaiah 52:13 thru 53:12)... When questioned about his movie Mel Gibson used this particular idea as his defense: He died for all of us, we are all guilty of His death (or something to that effect). We are commanded to pray (always) by Jesus; not just for our relatives and for other believers but for all of mankind--specifically for our enemies (or those who irk and test our limits). Do not place on your shoulders the guilt or problems of your husband. Whatever impacted him about "The Passion of the Christ" may be deep in his subconscious or it may be right at the surface! You have no control either way. I heard the old voilence excuse way back even before the movie had hit the theatres--know any person who finds the old black and white horror movies, which relied mostly on the music to create its moods, more appealing than today's full color, full sound, full special effects, in-your-face dismemberment and slashing and dashing and stripping and oozing any-excuse-to-mutilate movies? Could it be that the "Passion" hit your husband so hard that he had to look into himself and recognize that, as many of us, he has fallen short of his responsibility to Christ? Pray, always, specially for those you love and for those who's loyalty is divided (God some, the world almost all) and for those who fail to recognize Christ as the suffering servant who gave his life for us! God Bless! Angel |

16 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 117500
"Is there something in the bible about His own Word become and idol?" Hi, Lorenzo! Since the Bible as a unit did not exist during the lives Jesus' contemporaries there was little to caution about the Word becoming an idolized object. But we do fall into dangerous territory when we steadfastly pronounce that we alone have the truth, yet our own actions belie our words! Yet, this is not new amongst believers; Paul had to caution the early Church about taking sides and claiming to be doing God's will by following Kephas or Apolo or Paul... Paul admonished them and reminded them that only One died for our sins: Our Lord Jesus Christ, and that we all belong to Christ and He to God (the Father)! James, chapter 4, talks about such issues (divisiveness)... He warns about the fights and quarrels among the believers, he clarifies to them that we are a battle ground for sin and the spirit--whereas the Holy Spirit is fighting to keep us alive (in God). He warns that being a friend to the world (imitating and approving its practices and behavior) is making an enemy of God. He calls us to submit to God and reminds us that those who exalt themselves will be humbled by God and that those who seek God in an obedient and humbled manner will be exalted by God! We can, and have, made idols of the people in our lives, TV/movies; of things such as cars, jobs, houses, clothes, picture of loved ones, pets, race, color, nationality, hight, weight, intelligence, abilities, machismo, carisma, youth, affluence, and even perceived spiritual wisdom... so it does not surprise me that "my Bible version" could, and may well already have, become an idol for many "professed" Christians. God Bless! Angel |

17 | Cup Passed? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 118108
Hi, angelsn! Jesus was acutely aware that He came onto the world to be put through the wringer and to die a most notorious death! Though He was true man, He was also true God--aware, from the beginning of the Divine Plan! This Divine Plan was mirrored in many ways from the very beginning of the Bible (Genesis 3:15 depicts a microscopic sample of the spiritual battle). Jesus was not afraid of the physical consequences of His incarnation for the Plan had a built in fail-save: The Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me; I lay it down of my own free will, and as I have power to lay it down, so I have power to take it up again; and this is the command I have received from my Father. (John 10:17-18) What Jesus was aprehensive about was the consequenses of filling in for us: as the Lamb of God, Jesus would be crucified, in our stead, for the sins of the world! The three Persons of God are completely Divine and Holy--but the Person of Christ, born of Mary, born of the flesh could take onto Himself both our transgressions and the Father's demands for just restitution! Here's the hitch: How could the Father cleanse the Son from our sins if Christ Jesus did not take upon His Person said sins? And, how could the Father come near Jesus if He were to bear our sins on His Person?... For one instant in God's existence the Son would be separated from the Father! This, Jesus dreaded! This cup Jesus wished that He did not have to partake! Yet Jesus also knew that it would all be for naught if this event did not transpire! Jesus call to His Father: 'Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?' (my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?) not in fear of death or of pain but in desperation as He was approaching the designated moment in the Plan's schedule. There are two Biblical passages that attest to Jesus' determination to suffer, in his flesh, the wounds and death for our sins: John 19:28-30 After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed and, so that the scripture should be completely fulfilled, he said: I am thirsty. A jar full of sour wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in the wine on a hyssop stick, they held it up to his mouth. After Jesus had taken the wine he said, 'It is fulfilled'; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit. It is evident that Jesus was keeping track with the Plan--fulfilling even that portion that would seem most insignificant. Mark 15:22-24 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, which means the place of the skull. They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it. Then they crucified him... Jesus refused the concoction, not because it was not time for Him to fulfill the prophecy reflected in John 19:28-30, but because this brew contained myrrh--myrrh's properties allowed it to be used as an analgesic. Would Jesus fulfill the Divine Plan if His human body would be impervious to pain? Jesus did not allow the agony and torture of the cross to be taken from Him! God Bless! Angel |

18 | IM PREACHING ON SUNDAY!!................ | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 119240
Hi, SAZ! I love the Gospel of John because it covers everything about Jesus, from His pre-incarnation to His promise of His triumphant return! Particularly charged is the first chapter of John (1:1-18): Verses 1 and 2 establishes Christ’s Divinity Verse 3 establishes Creation Verses 4 and 5 establishes Jesus as the Light come to His people and defeating darkness Verses 6 through 8 establishes the coming of Jesus’ precursor (herald/messenger), and reaffirms Jesus’ Divinity Verse 9 reemphasizes Jesus, the Light, shinning onto mankind Verses 10 and 11 talks about His fulfillment of the old prophecy where God would come to His people; while simultaneously demonstrating that He was rejected by His own Verses 12 and 13 establishes the reward for those who accept Jesus and discloses a relationship never before proclaimed (we are made sons and daughters of God Verse 14 unequivocally establishes Jesus, God, taking human form, incarnating, to live among us, while establishing that there is a special bond between the Father and His Only Begotten Son Verse 15 renders John the Baptist’s proclamation of Jesus’ preeminence Verses 16 through 18 is a conglomerate of Jesus Divinity, His showering us with grace, His exclusive knowledge of God and revealing that Jesus is God through His Omnipresence! Verses 29 through 34 John the Baptist presents Jesus as the Lamb of God (you could turn to Prophet Isaiah’s Suffering Servant: 52:13 through 53:12), restates Jesus preeminence, introduces the Trinity, and adamantly establishes Christ as the Son of God! Chapter 3 Verses 14 through 21 Jesus recalls on the Old Testament’s reflection on His crucifixion, He establishes God’s Gift to the world, reveals that not all people will believe in Him, and distinguishes God’s children from the world’s Chapter 5 Verses 24 through 29 Jesus reveals Himself as Life: He brings eternal life to those who believe in Him Chapter 6 Verses 44 through 58 Jesus declares Himself the Bread of Life: the only means to achieve Eternal Life with God; He also establishes that there’s a special connection with Him and the Father--no one can come to Jesus but if not sent by the Father! Chapter 8 Verse 12 Jesus is the Light of the world in Him there’s no darkness! Verses 23 through 29 Jesus establishes His special relationship with the Father and reveals that He is the I Am (reflecting Yahweh’s words in Exodus 3:14 and John 8:58) Chapter 10 Verses 7 through18 Jesus introduces the Old Testament theme of Israel’s Shepherd (Ezekiel 34) and He pronounces that He is the Good Shepherd! Jesus also talks about the sheep from another fold which He will gather to Himself and make of the two one fold; in verse 15 Jesus reveals that He is the Lamb of God who will give up His Life for us! Chapter 11 Verses 25 through 27 Jesus is the resurrection and life; He promises eternal life to those who believe in Him; those who believe in Him recognize that He is the Messiah: the Son of God: the Resurrection! Chapter 14 Verses 6 and 7 Jesus is the Way, the Truth, the Life; He reveals to the disciples that He and the Father are one--though none of them are from Heaven, He has given them the grace to see that Father in Him! Verses 15 through 25 (coupled with 15:26-27 and 16:7-11) Jesus establishes His a spiritual relationship with His disciples (which is extended to us); He promises the Paraclete who will come in His name to complete the institution of the Church and to teach and guide us till Jesus’ Return! I hope some of this could be of use to you! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, mikec! The basic premise of a Christian is that he/she believes that Christ is God, our Lord and Savior... Catholics are Christians because they believe in Christ... Not all Christians are Catholics because only the Catholic Church (Roman, Orthodox, Eastern) subscribe to the various doctrines (Trinity, Universality, historical continuity, Scripture and Tradition...). I suggest to you to hit the Book--the Bible! The Holy Spirit can guide you better than anyone else can to the Truth. The Truth is but a word away: Faith! God Bless! Angel |
