Hi Val, The primary challenge I have with this line of thinking is that God is dealing with individuals now, not nations! The Great White throne judgment is yet future! John 5:23 explicitly states, God has commited all judgment to the Son, "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son" (NASB. Certainly God, in His permissive will allows such to happen. It's the result of the fall! But, I don't see this as His direct Divine judgment! Additionally, we can also develop a "worse works" mentality. If New Orleans was "punished", who's more deservant, and for what? Case in point, Stalin in Communist Russia and Mao in China systematically murdered 10's of millions of their own people. Isn't that much more deserving of punishment by God? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hi Jeff, What I intended to convey was that God is dealing with individuals now, not the nation of Israel! If it's fair to say, we're individually accountable to God, not nationally. (This is not to say that God does not care about nations)But, I think it speculation - as Hank noted- to attribute the direct cause of Katrina (or 911) to God's Divine judgment! I hope that clarifies. BradK |

Absolutely Brad. Not to rehash it but I agree that the attributing things like Katrina to God's judgment is all wrong for all the reasons stated so far. Thanks for responding, I understand now. Jeff |

Ok guys lemme through my two cents in real quick. First I thank all for their replies and to the original questioner for their time and for what they shared. Second I would like to state that I dont believe that God punished N.O. with the Katrina. I read the thread and came across some interesting replies. One thing that stood out is that it was said that God deals with us the same today as he did in the OT. I disagree, I definitely believe that the times recently preceding Christ to today, show that. In EVERY way God still works. And with the Job thing. God NEVER cause any of what happened. Satan did. God simply removed his hand of protection. I dont have much time so I must be brief. Thanks for your time. God bless!!! COG88 |

In an interview given by Pastor John McArthur he addresses this topic . The entire interview can be read at his website Grace to You under the title “Hurricane Katrina Interview”. He uses selected scriptures. It is a most interesting read. Here is one portion: JOHN: Yeah, I think in the things that we've seen, there is mercy mixed with judgment. But that's characteristic of God because, and I go back to this, Phil, if God wanted to destroy all sinners, He can destroy all sinners. I mean, He can do that and He will. There will come a day when this...this world burns up and everybody on it goes. Until that time, God is by nature, the Bible says, a Savior. He is by nature compassionate. He is by nature merciful so that these disasters are the exception and not the rule. With the single sort of exception of the great Flood of Genesis chapter 6, all these other judgments are partial, limited judgments. But they illustrate what all men deserve immediately. But God in His judgment and His justice always demonstrates His mercy because this is the time when God is manifesting Himself as a Savior. And so these things come as warnings. – (John McArthur) |
