This book is by a Rick Warren? I just called Mama and that's what she said. I'm not reading it or doing the study, it's a 7 wk thing. My Thur. Bible teacher isn't too thrilled about it. Says he uses about 15 different versions of Bible and most are corrupted versions, finds whichever fits his purposes. I get a yucky feeling going to church since they started it too. I heard there is a seeker sensitive movement that started quite a few years ago that basically boils down to not saying anything that will offend a seeker so gospel gets watered down. I heard this guy is one of the leaders in that movement. At Sun School we were going thru Phillippians, then going to start another, instead we're doing this. I just don't want to study somebody's book instead of the real thing. I'm working in library instead of SS till this is over. Oh, the kickoff at church 2 wks ago, the pastor actually used clips from Everybody Loves Raymond in his sermon. Several people started to walk out then. |

I think I just shot myself in the foot! Is this book being studied in Sunday School only and Not during the worship service? If so, I don't have a problem. Sorry, John |

Pastor does his whole sermon on this weeks study. There are some good things, I'll admit, but I was shocked at some of the scriptures one week, when I looked them up real fast in pew Bible and saw which ones they were, they didn't even resemble what was on screen...of course they flash it so fast, you can't really compare. Oh, pew Bible is NKJ and that's what I have too so unless I want to write in mine, during service it's easier to just grab theirs anyway. :) I quit bring my Bible to church during this because we don't need it, scriptures are posted on screen and it's whatever version they're using at the time, they pop on while he's reading it and then it's popped off so you can't really look at it. Since we aren't going thru the Bible in SS, why bother bringing it??? |

Greetings Norrie! So, he's not preaching from the book, he is simply structuring his sermons around the weekly theme of the book? I can't speak for your pastor, but I'm sure that he would say to bring your Bible even if the Scriptures are flashed on the screen. ;-) Another question if I may, is this Sunday School class your only option or are there others? I know that we, even being a smaller church, generally offer several options for Sunday School. One class might be a topical study. One class might be a doctrinal study. One class might use a quarterly. I know the Sunday School class I teach is currently doing a 13 week 'Christian Basic Training' series. It is basically a low level discipleship series. We are a LARGE church, there are many, many classes, at 8 and at 11 (church is at 9:30) but EVERY class is doing this program. You're Baptist, right? You know that Explore the Bible series, that's what we were doing and stopped it for this. I'd rather Explore the Bible. Many of the classes do the Explore the Bible but there are others that do other things, like you said. But this is a requirement for ALL, even the youth classes are doing it, nobody is exempt, you have no choice period. That's what I don't like, reminds me of a dictatorship. I don't like being told you WILL study this book, it just doesn't sit right w/me so I'm a rebel, I refuse to study it. They even had stands set up in foyer so you could buy your copy and everyone was supposed to get it. All I see is a conspiracy to make this Rick guy rich, wonder if they get kickbacks. I know that's terrible but I can't help it, that's how I feel about it. |

Greetings Norrie! Actually, I'm Nazarene! But, I have family who are Baptist, if that counts! :-) Concerning your rebellion, have you considered that every class if told what they are going to study? I'm sure that you have some sort of leadership structure for your Sunday School department, right? I'm sure that the leadership of both the church board and the teaching ministries of the church must have been involved in this decision, right? Here is where Satan can cause so many problems. This isn't a moral issue or a doctrinal issue. It is an issue of preference and style. But, you are allowing Satan to foster a spirit of rebellion over it. I would strongly encourage you to talk to the leadership of your church and find out why they are doing this study. Perhaps, after consulting with them, your attitude toward it might be different. However, whether you ultimately agree with their decision or not, you do have a responsibility to submit to the leaders God has appointed for your congregation. As I said previously, I haven't read this particular book, but I have been exposed to Rick Warren's preaching and writings. They have also blessed me tremendously. It may be that you are allowing yourself to be robbed of a blessing my friend! :-) I know that I think the book 'Purpose Driven Church' should be mandatory reading for every new church board! ;-) I pray God's richest blessings upon you and your congregation! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
