This book is by a Rick Warren? I just called Mama and that's what she said. I'm not reading it or doing the study, it's a 7 wk thing. My Thur. Bible teacher isn't too thrilled about it. Says he uses about 15 different versions of Bible and most are corrupted versions, finds whichever fits his purposes. I get a yucky feeling going to church since they started it too. I heard there is a seeker sensitive movement that started quite a few years ago that basically boils down to not saying anything that will offend a seeker so gospel gets watered down. I heard this guy is one of the leaders in that movement. At Sun School we were going thru Phillippians, then going to start another, instead we're doing this. I just don't want to study somebody's book instead of the real thing. I'm working in library instead of SS till this is over. Oh, the kickoff at church 2 wks ago, the pastor actually used clips from Everybody Loves Raymond in his sermon. Several people started to walk out then. |

Dear Norrie, Is it any wonder that the evangelical church is so ineffective in bringing our society back to righteousness? I am appalled that a church would set aside the preaching of Scripture in favor of a man's book during a worship service. John 4:23,24 "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." 2 Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, Titus 1:9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. That's how I feel but it doesn't seem to be the consensus. What's that tell you? "Give it a try, you might get blessed..."

Greetings Norrie! I am currently participating in a small group study of "The Purpose Driven Life" - it is NOT used in our worship services. I also am going through this book with an accountability person in my life - so I'm exploring God's purposes for me times two. Frankly, I need more than one day to process each chapter! There is a lot of Truth to be digested here. Like you, I am bothered by Rick's use of multiple translations - I'd prefer that He stick with just one (I also would have liked the references provided IN the text rather than foot noted as I take notes and want to include where this Truth is found in God's Word). HOWEVER, I do believe that what Rick has presented is of significant value for the church. I agree, it is NOT a replacement for God's Word, nor should it be used in place of our own personal study of Scripture. This is a point that I repeatedly remind my group of when we meet each week. I believe that "The Purpose Driven Life" also offers some real practical advice to be incorporated into our daily lives. For example, the chapters on what temptation is and how to defeat it (27,28 I think) are excellent. For me, this study has been good, but like "The Prayer of Jabez", I believe it can become a tool of the devil to entice believers away from dependency upon God's Word for their spiritual food. I would encourage you to get into a group of believers with whom you can develop some intimacy and study God's Word in conjunction with this text. In my group, I usually use a passage of Scripture to illustrate and/or elaborate upon a point that Warren makes. I am sure to have each person bring a Bible and then we look up and respond to what we read. I hope this helps . . . perhaps you should "Give it a try, you might get blessed..." (!) mommapbs |

I just listen to it in worship, go work in library thru SS and maybe hit last 10 min or so to show up. It may be OK but I'm protesting not doing Ephesians as scheduled before this came up.

Greetings Norrie - may I challenge you to submit yourself to the leaders that God has placed in authority over you whether you like what they have chosen or not? Your "protest" is akin to disobedience. Remember, your elder or shepherd is held accountable for you! ("Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you." Heb 13:7) With love for you IN Christ! mommapbs PS: See also 1 Peter 2:11-17 |

So if he leads me astray while I follow in blind obedience, that's acceptable??? Just how far as you supposed to go?

Norrie, God gave you His Word and His Spirit to enable you to discern right from wrong. No where do we read that we are to obey "blindly". We are to submit to our overseers - but in an order that enables us to reject a teaching if it is not of God. Re-read 1 Peter 2:16-17. I was only challenging your reasoning for "protest"! The Purpose Driven Life is NOT a replacement for the Bible, but it is also not heresy! All I am encouraging you to do is examine your motives and your heart attitude toward the body that you fellowship in! mommapbs |
