This book is by a Rick Warren? I just called Mama and that's what she said. I'm not reading it or doing the study, it's a 7 wk thing. My Thur. Bible teacher isn't too thrilled about it. Says he uses about 15 different versions of Bible and most are corrupted versions, finds whichever fits his purposes. I get a yucky feeling going to church since they started it too. I heard there is a seeker sensitive movement that started quite a few years ago that basically boils down to not saying anything that will offend a seeker so gospel gets watered down. I heard this guy is one of the leaders in that movement. At Sun School we were going thru Phillippians, then going to start another, instead we're doing this. I just don't want to study somebody's book instead of the real thing. I'm working in library instead of SS till this is over. Oh, the kickoff at church 2 wks ago, the pastor actually used clips from Everybody Loves Raymond in his sermon. Several people started to walk out then. |

Greetings Norrie! I was working off of memory. They are written by Rick Warren. Several years ago, I heard the accusation that Willow Creek had 'watered down' the Gospel to make it more appealing, so I checked into it. What I found was, that while I may not personally like every aspect of their worship service, the Gospel was definitely not watered down. Their pastor preached some very powerful and Biblical sermons. He just did it in a manner which was more appealing to modern hearers. For instance, he didn't wear a suit and tie. But, the message was not watered down. Technology seems to make people uncomfortable, but is playing a 'video clip' to illustrate a point, really any different than quoting a work of literature? Finally, what are 'corrupted' translations? I'm leaving for work now, so I'll have to end here! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Like Living Bible, Message, paraphrases instead of real translations. I know that a few scriptures they put on screens so we don't have to bother looking up, I looked up real quick and was shocked when I found out what they were in NKJ. Matt 6:6 and Rom 12:1-2 were two that what they put up there didn't even resemble what's in my Bible. But don't ask me what they put, it was so fast, it just flashed it for the time he was reading. That makes me leary too, to be that organized...ain't much room for Holy Spirit to work when it's that tight... I haven't read book, just going by what a man I trust says and he's an elder, Gideon, Bible teacher...what I'm exposed to during Sun service doesn't thrill me, I feel like I'm watching an X rated movie my spirit feels so tormented being there. |

Greetings Norrie! I'm not much for paraphrases myself. I think they have their occasional use, but for the most part, I stay away from them. But, I would not condemn someone else for using them! :-) I was struck by your comment about organization. Over the years, I have noticed a tendency for people to think that unorganized is more spiritual than organized. However, it is been my experience that this is not necessarily true. In my last church, I used to plan my preaching schedule out a year in advance. Someone from outside the church once commented that it seemed that this practice would keep the Holy Spirit from moving to touch special needs in the church during the year. But, guess what? The exact opposite occured. Everytime there was a special need, the message was exactly what was needed. The Holy Spirit knows what we will need - even a year in advance. :-) Most of what you have mentioned seems to fall into the category of different likes and dislikes, not truth and error. I am a bit concerned about this Elder though. It sounds like he may be allowing himself to be used to cause dissension. If he has a problem with the ministry of the church, he should be going to the leadership with it, not to others. I would caution that it is little things like these that Satan can use to cause enormous rifts. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
