Dear CSM, You wrote, "No one should have, and I know I did not have presuppositions." Everyone, everywhere, all the time has presuppositions. I think you are mistaking the word for "prejudices" or something. Presuppositions are simply our basic beliefs. Let me quote a good friend of mine, in answer to the question, "What is a presupposition?" "A presupposition is a ultimate assumption or foundational unquestioned principle which is or assumed to be true in the course of argument for the purpose of making other points. A presupposition is really an undergirding belief that precedes all other beliefs a person has; It is a belief that governs all our other beliefs or the most fundamental commitment of our heart and mind. Each person insists on some ultimate category of thought or conceptual framework which he must assume in order to make a sensible interpretation of reality. All of our arguments are ultimately settled only by appealing to the soundness of our first principles. Unbelievers start with the presupposition that man can be as God in the sense of being his own ultimate authority and erroneously believes he can do so successfully. For Christians we adopt the Word of God to evaluate all other beliefs, and must regard it with certainty. Reason must be the servant of Revelation (God’s Word). It is a view that places the Christian world-view and it’s basic assumptions over against the non-Christian world-view and basic assumptions!" --John Hendryx Presuppositions are not bad things. However, some presuppositions are false and some presuppositions are true. You were claiming that it was intuitively obvious to every man that he consists is composed of three parts. I'd call that an over-generalization. There are three common views held in philosophy: monism, dichotomy, and trichotomy. The fact that three different terms exist clearly implies there are people who do not agree with your claim. In Him, Doc |

Dear Doc, My understanding of Presuppose or presupposition was to take for granted; assume to start with. One could say, everyone does have a basic belief system, true or false. This is evidenced in the lifestyles of people and the view of what is good and what is evil. Mr Hendryx made the statement "It is a view that places the Christian world-view and it's basic assumptions over against the non-Christian world-view and basic assumptions!" I agree whole heartedly, and in that sense, believe :)Christians could all agree. Using it in the sense of basic belief systems and the knowledge of "actual" truth from God through his word. what was attempted to be said was all mankind has to deal with challenging the "reality" they have been taught by the world, people, and the interferring influence of "the god of this world" (system of thought, word and deeds). This only tended to mix up Adam and Eve when they took another's word, instead of Gods word, and acted on it. Of course there is the other deceiver as James 1:22 states, that after one knows truth, they do not do the truth. Isn't that what Adam and Eve did, deceived themselves? Isn't it what each of us do in our lack of understanding of God completely? I may not have made myself clear, as I did not intend to imply that it is intuitively obvious to every, or all man(-kind), that the composition is three parts. Actually the exact opposite was the intent. It is not intuitively obvious, it can only come through the study of God's word for oneself. I am so glad God has put his word above all philosopy, my pastor calls it philosophooey :) Please don't send me ugly letters, I didn't say it, he did! It is a given that there are philosophys, but only one truth, God's word. Dogmatic, right? Ro 12:2 "And be not conformed to this world (one might say: philosophies): but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that 1) good 2) and acceptable 3) and perfect will of God. Hmmmm the will of God is in three levels also! The one I most want to agree with is: 1)God the Father, 2) God the Son and 3) God the Holy Spirit, don't you wish everybody did? I John 5:7 Thank you for your kind answer. Always in Christ, C.S.M. |

Dear CSM, I always enjoyed Philosophy... and then I became a Christian. As one man put it, "Philosophers are men whose feet are firmly planted in mid-air." Theology, on the other hand, is rooted in the Scriptures. It is the firm foundation on which we base all truth. Consequently, you'll get no angry letter from me. :-) I would hope that you wouldn't anyway. In Him, Doc |
