1 | Informed opinions of the ESV please? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97909
What are your informed opinions of the ESV now that you have had more opportunity to read and asess it? I have been using it lately after reading searched posts by the folks of this forum. I thank you for pointing me to it. I am very pleased with this translation. I never thought that I would move from the NKJ and the NIV, but the ESV is winning me over.

newoldstock - The ESV apparently is enjoying wide acceptance from many quarters, so I come not to argue the virtues of this new translation. But if you would care to, please elaborate on your statement that the ESV is winning you over from the NKJV and NIV. What are some of the things about the ESV that you find more attractive than the other two translations you mentioned? For example, do you think it more accurate, more readable, more literary than the others? --Hank

Hank, I find the ESV more readable than the NKJV and just as readable, but more literal at the same time than the NIV. The English, especially the prose seems to flow better. The texts used for the ESV are the latest in scholarship and it uses the Masoretic text for the for the old testament. The NKJV uses the Bysintine text (TR) and the text used in the NIV is also somewhat dated now. I like the more formal equivalence better than the dynamic equivalence (NIV) method of translation for a bible to study.

newoldstock - An excellent and thoughtful response on the ESV. I own an inexpensive copy of this Bible and have read a fair sampling of it. What I've seen I've liked and would probably read it more if the page was more inviting. By that I mean, the print is rather too small and cramped for my liking and reading comfort. Have you tried the Holman Christian Standard Bible? Only the NT has been published thus far; the full Bible is scheduled soon I believe. It will be interesting to see how the ESV and HCSB do in competition with each other. Perhaps never again will any translation attain the wide acceptance that the KJV has enjoyed for centuries. These days there are simply too many horses in the race and several of them are good enough to win. Have you (has anyone) heard anything to confirm the chatter that Thomas Nelson may have a new revision of the NKJV in the oven? It's about time, I suppose. It's been two decades since the NKJV made its debut, and it seems no Bible publisher can wait longer than that to cook up a "more accurate, more readable" edition than has ever rolled off the press in the long and distinguished history of Bible translations into the English tongue. It's an exciting time in the Bible translation arena but an exhausting and expensive one for Bible readers. Exhausting just to keep up with what's going on in this busy field. Expensive just to equip oneself with copies of all the latest editions. If I had the money I've spent on Bibles the last decade or so, I have no doubt that I could treat my wife and myself to a fine Mediterranean cruise. :-) --Hank
5 | Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97981
Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles (just counted them) and 5 commentaries, dictionaries, and concordances. I think that I often get so wrapped up in what is the best translation to study that I defeat my purpose and don't study enough. Instead I'm reading books like The King James Version Debate, New Age Versions, The Translation Debate, and The Complete Guide to Bible Versions. I'm addicted to finding the right version when I should be reading A Bible! The best Bible is Read! I have not read the HCSB, but as you can see by my exasperation, I probably will. I have only heard the rummor of a new NKJV here on this forum. Let's sell all of the Books that we don't use regularly and set up a StudyBible Forum Group cruise! Jim

Jim -- I just recently waded through Carson's "KJV Debate" skipping the parts that were deplorably boring, which means I read about half the book, and concluded it wasn't really worth the effort. .... I have said on the forum before that it seems a worthy project to adopt a good version and stick by it for the most part. Instead of pooling all the extra Bibles forum users collect dust with to finance a group cruise, why not donate them to Madagascar. There would be enough to provide every man, woman and child there a copy of the Bible. The only thing we'd have to do is teach them to read English :-) --Hank
